Government starts work on clean Ganga mission

The state government has taken up a clean Ganga project by starting work on an integrated sewerage network on the riverfronts in Barrackpore, Kalyani, Halisahar and Gayeshpur.
 
The work — presently confined to the districts of North 24-Parganas and Nadia districts — is the first step in the Rs 272-crore World Bank-assisted national Clean Ganga Mission, and is part of a masterplan that aims to stop sewage and waste water from polluting the river.

Welspun to Set Up 100 Megawatt Solar Project in South India

India’s Welspun Renewables Energy Pvt. will set up a 100 megawatt solar-photovoltaic project in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. Welspun, based in New Delhi, signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government to develop the solar project at a cost of 7 billion rupees ($113 million), according to an e-mailed statement from the company.

SC rejects plea of windmill owners

The Supreme Court has rejected the windmill owners' plea seeking relief from Rs 35 crore fine imposed by Maharashtra government for installing structures in Koyna wildlife sanctuary, a part of the Sahyadri tiger reserve. 
 
The apex court in its order on January 16, a copy of which is with TOI, has allowed three months period for windmill and resort owners to deposit the fine with the state government. Karad-based environmentalist Nana Khamkar had complained in 2010 that windmills and resorts set up in the sanctuary should be treated as 'encroachments'.

Sops planned for renewable energy

The government plans to announce a special package of fiscal incentives in the budget next month to boost the growth of the country’s renewable energy sector with a focus on increasing India’s wind power generation capacity to 60,000 MW by 2022.
 
Finance minister Arun Jaitley is likely to announce a slew measures in his budget including a 10-year tax holiday for wind power producers, concessions in customs duty and exemption in excise duty for procurement of technology and equipment for projects.

Gamesa signs 100 MW windpower project

Spain-based wind turbine maker Gamesa has bagged a 100 MW wind power project in Maharashtra from Orange Renewable Power. 
 
"The deal comprises 50 units of Gamesa G97-2.0MW T104m wind turbines which will be commissioned in two phases by June 2015. The project is expected to come up in Khanapur, Maharashtra", Gamesa India, said in a statement. 
 
The company would be responsible for project supply, erection and commissioning. The agreement includes long term comprehensive operations and maintenance agreement, it said.

Mohali MC ordered to acquire land for waste disposal

The National Green Tribunal (NGT), Delhi, has ordered the Mohali Municipal Corporation (MMC) to acquire land for dumping solid waste within a year. The judgment came out of the court of Justice Swatanter Kumar on January 13, as the case was filed against the Mohali Industry and Commerce Association (MICA) last year.

Indian government ordered to unblock Greenpeace funds

The Indian government has been told by judges to unblock funds received by Greenpeace which have been frozen by authorities since June. The high court in Delhi, the capital, ruled on Tuesday that the freeze on funds that Greenpeace India had received from abroad was “arbitrarily illegal” and “unconstitutional”.

With U.S. President Barack Obama’s visit to India just days away, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is focused more on boosting the use of renewables in his country than committing to cuts in greenhouse-gas emissions.
 
Obama announced a pact with China two months ago for capping emissions, raising the pressure on India, the third biggest greenhouse polluter behind those two countries, to follow suit. The market size of Indian LED industry will reach Rs 21,600 crore by 2020, which will constitute 60 per cent of the total segment. As projected, the turnover of Indian lighting industry by 2020 will be Rs 35,000 crore. The milestone will be achieved by government’s renovated proposal to use LEDs for all street lamps and public spaces.

Indore Municipal Corporation to segregate plastic waste during collection

Plastic waste seems to have emerged as the biggest challenge for municipal solid waste management in city, as plastic constitutes around 26% of the waste generated in Indore daily. This was revealed during the on-going observation of trenching ground at Devguradia by a team of experts on the directives of Indore bench of Madhya Pradesh high court. 
 
Indore generates around 800 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day, while IMC has a capacity to process only around 400 tonnes of waste resulting into mountains of garbage dump at trenching ground.

First public lighting system that runs on solar, wind energy

Spanish researchers have designed the first public lighting system that runs on solar and wind energy.  The new system, developed after four years of research, is designed for inter-urban roads, motorways, urban parks and other public areas.
