Delhi government offers 15% subsidy on electric vehicles

The Delhi government wants you to buy electric vehicles instead of petrol or diesel powered vehicles. To encourage electric vehicle buyers, the government of Delhi is offering a 15% rebate on the MRP of each electric vehicle sold in that part of the country. The rebate will be credited to the customer’s bank account within 2 months of purchase of the electric vehicle. This offer is valid for both electric cars and two wheelers.

Pollution board to seek more time from Supreme Court for Ganga report

The apex court had recently asked the CPCB to check if 215 firms on Ganga's banks had effluent treatment plants. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) may seek more time from the supreme court to inspect over 200 industries running near River Ganga and discharging effluents into the water body.
 
The apex court recently asked the board to inspect 215 industries in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh to find out whether they have set up effluent treatment plants or not. The court also sought the report by October 27.

Delegates meeting under the umbrella of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on Friday closed a two-week long meet held in South Korea after agreeing to a series of 33 decisions. Bangladesh must continue its efforts to reform the garment industry to boost higher exports, World Bank said yesterday.
 
“Progress in improving workplace compliance is on track but more needs to be done in order to fulfil the commitment of raising it to international standards,” WB said in a report, Bangladesh Development Update.

Japanese firm develops wireless charging system for electric vehicles

Japanese electronic components maker TDK has developed a wireless charging system for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, which it hopes will be in use around 2018.
 
The system allows for charging a parked car without using a cable or plug. TDK also says the system can even be placed on roads to provide charging while driving, Xinhua reported Tuesday citing a Nikkei report.
 
In April, TDK acquired a patent portfolio from WiTricity, a Massachusetts-based engineering company. The new system combines know how from WiTricity with TDK's magnetic coil technology.... Read more..

SASE develops country's first geothermal space heating system

In a first step towards harnessing geothermal heat energy, scientists at Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) have successfully developed and installed country's first geothermal space heating system at Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) here on Saturday evening.
 
Costing Rs 1.95 crore (research cost not included), the three-year project was demonstrated on Saturday. Global Clean Energy Investment Grows 11%

According to the Clean Energy Pipeline, global clean energy investment jumped 11% in the third quarter of 2014 over figures a year earlier, clearing $64 billion.
 
The third quarter figures represent a 3% decrease on Q2’14 numbers, but are still healthy growth over a year earlier. Specifically, project financing totalled $41.8 billion in Q3’14, reaching a seven-quarter high.

Final shape to 'Smart Cities' project by next month: M Venkaiah Naidu

The government will give a final shape to its proposed flagship scheme on developing '100 smart cities' next month, Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said here today.
 
"100 smart cities will come up..some by converting present cities and some by having satellite towns around those cities and some by combining two cities into one by building a new city in between. Climate Change: India's Carbon Emissions From Improving Electricity Access in 30 Years Was Marginal

Improving household electricity access in India over the last 30 years contributed very marginally to the nation's total carbon emissions growth during that time, says a study published in Nature Climate Change.
 
From 1981 to 2011, household electricity access in the country improved from around 25% to between 67-74% of the population, empowering almost 650 million people.

BIS pushes for standards for all products

 To check the sale of non-standard electrical and electronics Chinese items and even Indian products like helmets, toothpaste and razors etc, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has approached the government to do away with the clause that allows several such items to be sold in open market without complying with any standard.

Fresh UN climate talks opened in Bonn on Tuesday with a plea for nations to overcome rifts as scientists reported record global temperatures for a month of September.

India Expands Solar Power Target, Will Add 15 GW Over Next Five Years

The new Indian government has delivered on its promise to enhance the solar power capacity addition targets under the ambitious National Solar Mission announcing revised guidelines for capacity allocation.
 
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy recently released revised guidelines for auction of solar photovoltaic power projects with a significant hike in overall capacity. As per the revised target (pdf), the government plans to add 15 GW of solar power capacity by Q1 2019. The first of the auctions to meet these new targets will involve 1,000 MW of capacity.

Indian companies decouple growth from carbon emissions: CDP report

Indian companies have already embarked on their journey towards a low carbon economy and a high number have demonstrated that it is possible to decouple business growth from carbon emissions, according to a new report released on Wednesday.
 
The India 200 Climate Change Report 2014 by CDP, an international non profit organisation, says that 24 per cent of the companies surveyed have reduced their absolute emissions while driving business growth and profitability. IIT team reuses waste paper to help schoolkids

 The abysmal state of schools in the hinterland has inspired a unique project by IIT-Delhi students. A team of 17 BTech students collect waste paper and cartons from resident welfare associations (RWA) and houses in south Delhi as well as companies in Gurgaon and Noida to get them recycled into notebooks for village schools near Delhi and in various parts of Uttar Pradesh. So far, they have distributed more than 800 recycled paper notebooks.

Neeri develops more efficient biofuel reactor

Scientist at the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (Neeri) have developed a modified and simpler version of a biofuel reactor and installed it at the Go Vigyan Anusandhan Kendra (GVAK), Deolapar. The tailor-made equipment is on trial run and soon the process will be standardized as per the requirement of the Kendra and the food and vegetable waste generated there.

India today signed a deal with Canada on clean water technologies, with a focus on Prime Minister's Clean Rivers Mission.
