Surge in Investment Recharges India’s Sputtering Power Sector

Investors are ploughing money into India’s energy sector again, betting that there are brighter days ahead as the country’s new government clears the path for power producers and distributors.

Old tech gear piling up? Dump it in Corporation's 'e-waste kiosks'

People in Chennai can now drop broken keyboards, used batteries and other damaged electronic equipment in Corporation of Chennai's 'e-waste kiosks'. 

The civic body has opened one in each of its 200 ward offices in the city. A corporation official said people can leave their products for free at such collection centres. 

"This will reduce the amount of e-waste that is dumped with solid waste in the Kodungaiyur and Perungudi dumping yards," the official said.

'Goa's open-cast mines can generate hydel power'

Goa's 90 odd open-cast iron ore mines, currently closed for nearly two years following a mining ban, could be tapped for generating hydel power, says wildlife conservationist Bittu Sahgal. 

Speaking during the inauguration of an environment film festival in Panaji Friday, Sahgal, a member of the National Wildlife Board, also said that mining is necessary but not at such a scale that it "consumes us".

"We certainly need mining to do a whole load of things, but we don't need it at a scale that mining itself consumes us," Saghal said.

India's reservoir water level drops to two-thirds of capacity

In this year of deficient rainfall, less than two-thirds of the country's major reservoir-storage capacity of water is currently available -- some 85 percent of the available storage in the corresponding period of last year, the water resources ministry said Friday. 

"The Water storage available in 85 important reservoirs of the country as on Aug 21, 2014 was 101.253 BCM (billion cubic metres)" the ministry said in a statement here.

Global energy price trend positive for India: Crisil

Crisil Research, a unit of India’s largest credit rating agency Crisil Ltd, expects global energy prices to either ease or rise at a much slower pace in the next five years as supplies increase and consumers increasingly move towards alternative fuels.As a result, India’s energy bill may rise at a much slower pace, allowing the government to curb the money its spends on oil subsidies, it said.

Tata Power Solar to supply one lakh solar panels to ACME's 20 MW project in Rajasthan

Tata Power Solar, a manufacturer of solar modules, has won an order to supply 20 megawatt (MW) of solar modules for a project by ACME Solar in Rajasthan. 

The project is under the DCR (domestic content requirement) segment of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) phase-2 batch-1, the 1,00,000 modules, constituting 60,00,000 cells, needed for the project will be manufactured at the company's manufacturing facility in Bangalore, a statement from the company said.

Making it clear that pollution of the Ganga will not be allowed, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar today said industries along the river bank would be monitored round-the-clock. 

The Central Pollution Control Board will be handling the real-time monitoring of the industries, he told reporters here.

The south Indian state, which recently saw its boundaries redrawn, is drawing up a new renewable energy policy with an aim to attract investment and boost power generation capacity.

The government plans to create public sector energy giants with a massive restructuring exercise that will amalgamate all state-run hydropower firms and transfer their thermal projects to NTPC to create strong companies that can take on the rapidly growing private conglomerates. Rajasthan to clip 4,000-Mw solar project to save birds

In a major jolt to India's solar energy programme, the Rajasthan government might cancel the 4,000-Mw solar UMPP (ultra mega power project), which was expected to come up near Sambhar Lake.
