Marks & Spencer backs UNICEF carbon offset project

Marks & Spencer (M&S) has become the first major company to sign up to Unicef's new carbon offset project. This initiative aims to improve the health and lives of vulnerable children while cutting carbon emissions that cause climate change.

M&S will kick start the project in early 2014 by providing funds for 40,000 fuel-efficient, low pollution cook stoves to be manufactured, sold and maintained by local entrepreneurs in Bangladesh. Solar energy policy will not hit tribals: CM

 Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Wednesday that proposals in the Solar Energy Policy of the government for use of tribal land for solar and other renewable energy projects would not lead to alienation of tribal lands.

Replying to questions at his weekly Cabinet briefing, the Chief Minister said that the proposals were aimed at ensuring a steady income to tribals. Their land was to be used for generating solar power under terms of an agreement that would bring in monthly revenues. They would not lose ownership of land.

Government targets to roll out subsidies for electric cars by April 2014

The ministry of heavy industries is targeting to roll out subsidies for electric vehicles - under the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan by April of 2014. 

The policy unveiled by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh earlier this year was stuck due to the slowdown in the economy. However, the senior government official on Thursday said, the heavy industry ministry is planning to get all the cabinet approvals before the 1st of April so that the incentives start flowing to electric vehicle makers from April 1.

Demand for India Renewable Credits Doubles in November

 Demand for renewable-energy credits in India doubled in November as regulators enforce clean-power targets for companies and state-run utilities.

There were 308,928 bids to buy wind, hydro and biomass credits, after 150,640 the previous month, according to data from trader REConnect Energy Solutions Pvt.

NREDCAP popularising ‘green power’ in domestic sector

 The New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP) is trying to popularise small roof-top solar power systems in the domestic sector by emphasising on the importance of energy savings and recovery of investments.

Through rooftop solar systems, people can tap the solar energy which is available in abundance (for 11 months in a year) and contribute any excess power to the State’s electricity grid.

Power Grid plans to set up arm for energy efficiency solution

 Pursuing diversification agenda, electricity transmission utility Power Grid plans to set up an unit for providing energy efficiency solutions.

The state-owned major also intends to start manufacturing towers, conductors as well as equipment through joint ventures.

E-scooter maker to raise Rs 30 cr

 Bangalore-based Go Green BOV plans to raise Rs 30 crore ($5 million) from private equity firms or impact investors to fuel its expansion. Impact investors want to make a social impact with reasonable returns.

The company, which claims to have developed India's first electric scooter that gives a mileage of 100 km with a single charge, will invest Rs 18 crore to set up an integrated plant to manufacture motors, controllers, ABS plastic parts and other accessories required to assemble electric scooters.

Phase II of the Solar Mission shows that developers will need a better supply of short term financing products before projects can materialize under Phase II of the National Solar Mission. The phased disbursal of the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) associated with Phase II projects has left developers seriously worried on the pathway for financial closure and the viability of these projects.

Suzlon arm REpower Systems bags order from Australian firm

 Wind turbine major Suzlon Group today said it has signed a contract with Mitsui & Co for setting up 106.6 MW windfarm in Australia.

"Suzlon Group-subsidiary REpower Systems SE announced the conclusion of an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract with Mitsui & Co (Australia) to deliver 52 wind turbines with a total rated output of 106.6 MW for the Bald Hills windfarm in Victoria, Australia," the company said in a statement.

Gujarat, India, seeking to build a CSP plant for 24 hour generation

 The Gujarat State Electricity Corporation has issued a call for 'Expression of Interes' to provide consultancy services for carrying out the feasibility study and preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) for setting up of Solar Thermal Plant (of about 50 MW capacity with storage facility so that generation can be made available throughout the day, i.e 24/7.

The tender does not include any preferred technology for the CSP plant project, nor the energy storage technology.

India raises 1b loan for green power grid

 The plan to create a Rs 50,000 crore green grid to evacuate solar and wind power has got a leg-up with the government receiving the first tranche of a ¤1 billion soft loan from Germany.

In the Rs 18,000 crore first phase, the grid will be set up in Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu, both of which have substantial wind and solar power capacity. Work has begun in these two states. Subsequently, work will begin in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Tata Power announces 61% increase in power generation

Tata Power on Wednesday announced generating 22,738 MUs of power collectively from all its power plants in first half of the financial year 2013-14 as compared to 14,029 MUs in the same period of the previous year.

This marks a 61% increase in generation, with the total power generation capacity of Tata Power standing at 8521 MW from various fuel source: thermal (coal, gas and oil), hydroelectric power, renewable energy (wind and solar PV) and waste heat recovery, reinforcing its position as the largest integrated power company in India.

PowerGrid seeks shareholders nod to raise FII limit to 30%

 Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd is targeting foreign investor participation by increasing the shareholding limit for foreign institutional investors to 30 per cent of the paid-up capital from 24 per cent now.

In addition, the public sector player is expanding its borrowing limit to Rs 1.30 lakh crore from Rs 1 lakh crore.

The company is seeking shareholders nod for the proposals through postal ballot.

It said the result would be published on December 27.

Earlier, the PowerGrid board has approved both the proposals on October 23.

No tap water for 25% of Delhiites

As Delhi heads for polls, some key issues are agitating the common voter although these may not be felt as much by the city's well-heeled sections. One such issue is water. According to Census 2011, about a quarter of the city's 1.67 crore population does not get treated piped water. That's about 42 lakh people dependent on water tankers, hand pumps, tubewells etc.

Expressing disappointment over the lack of support to promote electric cars in India, Mahindra & Mahindra CMD Anand Mahindra on Wednesday asked the government to grant subsidies to automakers to promote green cars.
