European Union unlikely to extend emissions cuts: MinistersThe European Union (EU) is unlikely to raise its commitment to cut carbon emissions by 30% from 20% until other countries show greater willingness to follow suit, ministers said on Saturday. The EU has set a target of cutting carbon dioxide (CO2) by 20% from 1990 levels over the next decade. It promised ahead of climate talks in Copenhagen in December that it would deepen those cuts to 30% if other countries did likewise. The United Nations has fixed a January 31 deadline for countries to commit to emissions cuts and the EU sees no sign that major economies will set... Read more.. CO2 could soon become green fuel feedstock, say Brit scientistsCarbon dioxide could soon be used in cooling freezers and as a feedstock for alternative fuels, according to British researchers. According to Dermot O'Hare at the University of Oxford, CO2 can be converted into methanol to be used as fuel. However, the task is not easy, reports New Scientist. O' Hare pointed out: "One of the difficulties chemists have is doing anything with CO2...The trouble is that the molecule is so stable, it's hard to find chemicals reactive enough to target CO2 but specific enough to ignore other components of the atmosphere such as carbon monoxide and... Oceans losing ability to absorb greenhouse gasLike a dirty filter, the Earth's oceans are growing less efficient at absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide, the major greenhouse gas produced by fossil-fuel burning, reports a study co-authored by Francois Primeau, UC Irvine Earth system science associate professor. The oceans largely kept up when carbon dioxide emissions began soaring in the 1950s, but the absorption rate has slowed since the 1980s and dropped off even more noticeably since 2000, according to the recent study in the journal Nature. Here, Primeau answers questions about the research, which suggests the... Read more.. Date : Jan 12 Source: PhysOrg

Carbon, Carbon Everywhere But What About the Water?Everybody's talking about carbon footprints. And how fossil fuels spew carbon into places where it probably should not be spewed. O.K.: We get it. But despite all the attention directed at carbon, more and more scientists are starting to figure out that it takes so much water to create energy, and so much energy to move water, that whenever we talk about the carbon footprint of energy, we really should be talking about its water footprint as well. That is because water... Read more.. Date : Jan 11 Source: RenewableEnergyWorld.com
