TN to install solar-powered borewells in forests

 Tamil Nadu government will drill borewells and install solar-powered motors to pump water to overhead tank in forests and sanctuaries to prevent wild animals from getting into villages in search of water during summer. 

The government said in a statement here Monday that forest animals venture into human habitation in search of water when water bodies in forests dry up in summer when the monsoon fails.

According to the statement, water would be pumped to overhead tank through submersible solar pumps and would be used when needed.

BHEL, PowerGrid among 5 PSUs setting up mega solar power project

 Five central public sector undertakings (CPSUs) intend to set up a solar power project with a total capacity of 4,000 mega watts. BHEL, PowerGrid Corporation, Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam, Solar Energy Corporation, and Hindustan Salts will set up the project on land belonging to Hindustan Salt at Sambhar in Rajasthan.

The operation and management contract for this project, to be commissioned in three years, is to be awarded to another CPSU, Rajasthan Electronics and Instruments.

FICCI inks MoUs to raise energy efficiency

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) signed two MoUs to promote energy efficiency, conservation and management of demand, the industry body said Monday

The MoU among FICCI, Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) of Germany will explore the feasibility of implementing a project on trigeneration -- simultaneous production of electricity, heating and cooling -- at the FICCI headquarters building here, the chamber said

India puts $7.9bn into renewables 'corridor'

Responding to Climate Change reports that the corridor would be constructed over seven states by the turn of the decade.
 
The World Bank and German investors will aid the development, according to Ratan Watal, Indian secretary at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
 
The Asian Development Bank and the National Electricity fund would also provide financing for the project.
The first $332m will be provided in the near future by German bank KfW.

Morgan Stanley-backed Continuum Wind Energy acquires 180 MW wind farms

 Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners-backed Singapore's Continuum Wind Energy Pte Ltd has acquired DJ Energy Pvt Ltd and Uttar Urja Power Projects Pvt Ltd from Delhi-based Sravanthi Group for an undisclosed amount.

BMR Legal acted as the legal advisor to Continuum Wind and SB Partners advised the Sravanthi Group on the transaction.

DJ Energy and Uttar Urja Power Projects own and operate 98.7 MW and 80 MW wind farms in Ratlam and Mandsaur districts in Madhya Pradesh, respectively.

Water scarcity is the biggest challenge for Delhi: CM

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday identified water scarcity as the biggest challenge facing the national capital and cautioned that the situation may worsen in the next five years if concrete steps to address the issue are not taken. 

Speaking at an event organised by industry chamber CII, Dikshit noted that population of Delhi was increasing significantly and the per capita consumption of water was probably one of the highest in the world so the city may have to face "great trouble" in the next few years if supply of raw water does not go up.

94 hydel plants stuck due to delay in clearances: Scindia

As many as 94 hydro power projects are languishing due to tardy progress at various levels in granting them clearances.

Once approved, these projects that are pending due to want of clearances by various ministries, can generate 37,000 MW, Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has said. 

The ministry, he said at a media interaction, is working diligently to get clearances for them. Hydro power contributes 18.6 per cent or 39,416 MW of the total 2,11,766 MW capacity in the country.

India, Iraq to cooperate in energy, water management

India and Iraq Friday inked four agreements, including an MoU on energy cooperation and in the management of water resources following talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his visiting Iraqi counterpart Nouri al Maliki.

AP Genco plans to invest Rs 1,000 cr in solar PV farms

AP Genco, the power generation corporation, has decided to invest about Rs 1,000 crore to set up 150 MW of solar PV farms in the State.

“A decision on the proposal by AP Genco to set up solar PV units was taken by the board recently. In addition to the 50 MW planned earlier, we have decided to set up another 100 MW,” K. Vijayanand, Managing Director of AP Genco, said. “We have land for 50 MW unit and are in the process of identifying land for another 100 MW solar PV cluster. With an aim to cultivate crops with less use of water in Haryana, a sum of Rs 90 crore has been approved during the current financial year under National Mission for Micro Irrigation.

Global damage from flooding could cost coastal cities as much as US$1 trillion per year — and developing countries will be hardest hit, a study warns.

The National Green Tribunal on Monday asked the UP Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) to produce an exhaustive list of polluting industries in Noida so that liabilities can be fixed on them for damaging the environment.
