Indo-US N-deal has miles to go: Anil Kakodkar

A key negotiator of the Indo-US nuclear deal, former atomic energy commission chief Anil Kakodkar , did not mince words on Monday in saying" more hurdles were coming in our way" in the form of the latest guidelines proposed by the nuclear suppliers group (NSG).

The NSG's move to restrict export of enrichment and reprocessing technology (ERT) to countries that have not signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) will negate a considerable part of the waiver granted to India as a result of the Indo-US deal." Activists urge ADB to review hydel projects in HP

Environmental activists, opposing hydropower projects in Himachal, have asked Asian development Bank (ADB) to withhold loan for these projects and review its decision regarding the project.

Bhilwara to raise $15 Million from IFC

Noida-based Bhilwara Green Energy, an IFC investee company, where IFC holds a 5.24 percent stake, will raise $15 million from IFC to develop, own and operate a 51 MW wind farm in village Kukudwad, located in the Satara district in Maharashtra. Environment Ministry's nod must to import 2nd hand computers

Concerned over dumping of e-waste like used computers in the country, the Revenue Department on Monday asked customs officials to ensure that no such goods are imported without a nod from the Environment Ministry .

The direction comes after the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) assumed significance in wake of reports that e-wastes such as used computers, cathode ray tube, random access memory and electrical and electronic assemblies are being dumped in a big way into the country thereby posing serious threat to environment.

54 Punjab hospitals found violating norms

Fifty-four health care centres in Punjab are violating bio-medical waste norms, statewide raids by the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) on Sunday revealed. PPCB chairman KS Pannu said the raids were conducted as the board had strong apprehensions that several hospitals were not complying with the bio-medical waste (management and handling) rules, 1998. Reports indicated that many hospitals were either dumping their bio-medical waste along with the solid waste or throwing it away in an unhygienic manner, he said.

GM crops save billion kg of CO2 gas emissions

Genetically modified crops have saved around 18 billion kg of C)2 gas emissions, which is equivalent to removing 8 million cars from the road, a fact that reveals importance of the newer plant technology in mitigating climate change.

Tea industry irked as govt demands pollution control fees

The Assam government classifying tea industry under ‘orange’ category and asking them to pay pollution control fees for 10 years at lump-sum has irked the industry. It has demanded reconsideration of the government’s decision.

Gujarat's wind power capacity grows 500% in six years

With 2,175 Mw, the state holds 15.36 per cent of India's total wind power generation capacity.

In what can be called as a quantum leap for Gujarat's renewable energy sector, the wind power generation capacities have seen a sharp increase since 2006 from 338 Megawatt (Mw) to 2175.5 Mw in 2011. The share of Gujarat in the country's total wind power generation capacities has jumped from mere 6.32 per cent in 2006 to a respectable 15.36 per cent in 2011.

Solar power over water, an interesting bet at Tata

Imagine a small film floating on water. Now imagine the power of the sun flowing through the film.

Tata Power has imagined, and gone beyond, to build India’s first floating solar plant at Walvan lake near Lonavala, where the company has a hydel power station.

Deny ENR tech, lose out on Indian N-reactor market: Rao

Foreign secretary Nirupama Rao has dropped hints that India may not buy nuclear reactors from countries which refuse to sell enrichment and reprocessing (ENR) technology to it.

This was even as she said that India already had reaffirmation of support for the 2008 NSG clean waiver to India, as also bilateral civil nuclear commitments, from major partners like the US, France and Russia in the wake of fresh NSG guidelines which ban sale of ENR to non-NPT signatories.

A team at the University of Arkansas and the University of San Francisco, led by an Indian-origin computer science researcher, has developed an iPhone automated energy-management system that monitors energy generation and consumption in off-grid and grid-tied homes that use solar energy or wind power.
