Drinking water from sewage becomes reality

Recycling is so yesterday. With the drinking water crisis becoming more acute, the world is looking at recovering used water. An invention by a Bengaluru-based scientist has seen his campus recover 10,000 litres of water from sewage every day and use it for drinking too.

Dr Rajah Vijay Kumar's invention - the Boom Tube Resonator - recovers water fit for drinking and gives high-value fertilizer as a byproduct. It uses no chemicals or micro-organisms.

Parlimentary panel asks govt to evolve mechanism for e-waste management

Slamming the Centre for doing "too little" to manage e-waste, a parliamentary panel has asked the government to evolve a robust mechanism and ensure creation of adequate infrastructure so that e-waste rules can be implemented in an effective manner.

Coal India asks government to levy environment tax on pet coke

Amid raging controversy over rising pollution, state-owned CIL has urged the government to levy an environmental tax on pet coke, which it termed as more polluting than coal.

"Recently we made recommendation to the Coal Ministry that environmental tax should be imposed on pet coke as it emits large amount of sulphur dioxide in the environment," an official said on conditions of anonymity.

IBM Researchers Create Cheaper, Biodegradable Plastics from Plants

IBM researchers today said they have identified a chemical catalyst that creates cheaper, biodegradable plastics from plants such as palm trees and beets that can be used to make a range of products, from eating utensils to medical devices.

First Solar'S 130 MW solar power to light 227,500 homes

Hindustan Zinc to double silver output to catch solar wave

Hindustan Zinc Ltd, a subsidiary of billionaire Anil Agarwal's mining conglomerate Vedanta Ltd, aims to double silver output in five years due to rising prices and increased demand from solar panel makers.
