India to bank on ‘clean service sector’ model in climate change ...

A report by the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) on the major issues and policy implications on climate change says that the issue of lower GHG emissions on account of a service-dominated GDP needs to be considered while making internal reforms relating to climate change and as an argument on GHG emissions.

The Macchalli village of Karwar taluk finally got electricity supply, with Karwar DC Channappa Gowda inaugurating the solar light facility extended to the village under Rajeev Gandhi Akshaya Urja Yojana (RGAUY) scheme on Wednesday.

Gap between India, US emissions goals grows wider

When President Barack Obama and Prime minister meet next week to talk about climate change the leaders will focus on green technologies rather than narrowing the global divide on greenhouse gas emissions goals, the chairman of the U.N.'s climate science panel said.

Rajendra Pachauri said the gap between the United States and India on how to battle climate change has grown over the last six months in the lead up to the U.N. climate meeting in Copenhagen in December.

Echelon Participates in Energy Efficiency Trade Mission to India

Echelon Corp. has announced that it is participating in an energy efficiency trade mission to India, co-hosted by the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Government of India, and the Ministry of Power.

StanChart eyes $800 mln in renewable deals

Standard Chartered Plc said it planned to invest in several renewable energy projects in Asia worth over USD 800 million.

"We provide debt, advisory and equity across the sector," Brad Sterley, director of the bank's renewable energy and environmental finance team, told Reuters on the sidelines of a clean energy conference in Singapore.

The country’s Thirteenth Finance Commission which is scheduled to submit its report on federal transfer of resources to state governments on December 31, 2009 is likely to make special provision for green budgets for both the state and central governments.

India's Suzlon sells stake in Belgian firm Hansen

Suzlon Energy, India's biggest maker of wind turbine generators, has sold a 35-percent stake in Belgian wind gearbox maker Hansen, raising 370 million dollars as it moves to cut debt, a statement said.

The sale, reducing troubled Suzlon's holding in Hansen Transmissions International NV to 20 percent, was announced late Thursday by the company.

It comes as Suzlon, buffeted by slowing orders as the global economic downturn has hit demand for clean energy projects, is seeking to reduce debt of around three billion dollars.

Bihar villagers now get green electricity

A technology that converts rice husk into electricity is gaining ground in Bihar. Some 100,000 households in the state already use electricity produced from biomass and their number is steadily growing.

Carbon pollution up, despite recession

Pollution typically declines during a recession. Not this time.

Despite a global economic slump, worldwide carbon dioxide pollution jumped 2 percent last year, most of the increase coming from China, according to a study published online yesterday.

“The growth in emissions since 2000 is almost entirely driven by the growth in China,’’ said study lead author Corinne Le Quere of the University of East Anglia. “It’s China and India and all the developing countries together.’’

The US and other advanced countries may be dithering in the fight against climate change but India is ready to launch its SolarMission under the National Action Plan on Climate Change, with plans to generate 1,000 mw of power by 2013.

Greenpeace report: India’s energy programme is anti-poor and carbon-intensive

Greenpeace today released a report – “Still Waiting” – which reveals that despite growth in electricity generation – and increasing carbon emissions – the rural poor continue to be deprived of electricity. The report challenges the government’s energy model and recommends a decentralised energy mix as a solution to overcome social injustice and mitigate climate change.

40 percent Indian households still powerless: Greenpeace

Despite India's growing electricity generation and increasing carbon emissions around 40 percent of households -- a majority of which are in villages -- do not have electricity, says a Greenpeace report released here Tuesday.

"The total installed generating capacity in India has gone up from 58,012 MW (in 1989) to 152,148 MW (in 2009)... But 40 percent of the households mostly in rural areas have no access toelectricity even in 2009," said the report.

India and Japan will jointly set up new and renewable energy (NRE) parks in the country by March next using Japanese know-how and latest technology, business chambers of the two countries said in a joint statement here today. JSW Energy Plans Initial Public Offer Next Month, Jindal Says

JSW Steel Ltd., India’s third- largest steelmaker, expects to open the initial public offering of its energy business next month, valuing the unit at about 200 billion rupees ($4.3 billion).

India, Canada to ink civil N-deal soon

Uranium-rich Canada hopes to sign an agreement soon with India for civilian nuclear cooperation. “I sincerely hope our government will soon conclude a civilian nuclear agreement which will enable development of nuclear power for civil use,” said visiting Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Monday.

Binding climate treaty may slip far in to 2010

A binding international treaty to limit greenhouse gas emissions will slip to mid-2010 or beyond and a summit in Copenhagen next month will fall short of its ambitions, the United Nations and Denmark said on Monday.

The United Nations' top climate official said a treaty could be wrapped up at talks in Bonn by mid-2010. Denmark, host of next month's meeting, said it might take longer - until Mexico in December. WWF India to offset air travel emissions with Swedish Tricorona

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) India has chosen to curb the climate impact of its air travel via Gold Standard Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) offsets from the biomass project of Swedish emission trading company Tricorona AB STO: TRIC), the parties said today.
