Inox Wind says will put up 500 mw; industry consolidation inevitable

Inox Wind, part of the $2-billion Inox group, is planning to do 500 Mw of wind power plants this year with 300 Mw orders, worth roughly Rs 1,800 crore, already on its books. The company is the fourth largest wind equipment manufacturer in the country.

India's wind installations dropped 47 per cent in 2012-13 to 1.7 gigawatts of wind capacity after the expiry of government incentives, according to Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association. This happened even as globally, a record 48.4 gigawatts of new wind capacity was added in 2012.

Mangalore, twin cities may come under JnNURM

The urban development department is preparing a proposal to include tier II cities of Mangalore, Hubli-Dharwad and Gulbarga under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM). This is a massive city modernization scheme launched by the Centre under the ministry of urban development.

As of now, Hubli-Dharwad qualifies for JnNURM in the second phase as its population has touched 10 lakh.

Gamesa to Supply 230 Megawatts of Turbines for India Wind Farms

Gamesa Corp. Tecnologica SA (GAM), Spain’s largest wind-turbine maker, agreed to supply 230 megawatts of gear to two companies building power plants in India.

Gamesa is providing 65 of its 2-megawatt turbines to CLP Holdings Ltd.’s China Light & Power India unit and will maintain them for 10 years, the Zamudio, Spain-based company said in a statement today.

The company will also deliver 100 megawatts of turbines to Greenko Group Plc (GKO), and the deal may be expanded by an additional 200 megawatts.

In a bid to boost its global ambitions, Tata Power Renewable Energy, is looking to expand in Africa to tap the continent’s potential. “We are scanning different countries and looking at potential solar, geothermal and hydro projects at various overseas markets. However, many parts in Africa, especially South Africa have lot of potential options,” said Rahul Shah, chief of business development and renewables, Tata Power.

Indian Energy Exchange sees 62% jump in trading volumes

 Indian Energy Exchange, the country's first energy trading platform, recorded a 62% increase in trading volume in 2012-13, as frequent electricity outages forced power distributors and industrial units to rely more on it for their needs.

Sector-specific action needed to cut carbon emissions

India needs to take sector-specific action and develop a mechanism to track the achievements in each area to achieve the goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, says a study conducted by WWF-India.

The Indian government aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in relation to its GDP by 20-25 percent from the 2005 levels by 2020.

The study, which was supported by the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, highlighted the need for a system to track developments in the area of low carbon growth policies at state level.

'India inching towards water scarcity'

 India is "inching towards water scarcity" and the situation in several states is critical as ground water levels are depleting at an alarming rate, Union Minister for Water Resources said on Wednesday. 

Speaking to a news agency on the sidelines of the Second Asia Pacific Water Summit, Harish Rawat called for treating water as a "community resource." 

"We are a water stressed nation inching towards water scarcity," Rawat said.

India's Wind-Power Target Is up in the Air

 India's ambitious push to increase the share of renewable energy in its total power generation portfolio to nearly one-fifth by 2017 largely on the back of wind power could falter due to slow progress in implementing policies to attract investment to the sector, according to industry officials.

Wind energy accounts for around 70% of India's renewable-energy generation, excluding large hydroelectric power projects. A government target of doubling renewable energy output to 55 gigawatts in the five years to March 2017 relies heavily on growth in the wind sector.
