Environment ministry to consider diverting 300 sq km of forests for projects

The environment ministry will consider clearing a whopping 300 sq km of forests for projects in the next meeting of its Forest Advisory Committee (FAC), the statutory body which appraises projects that require forest land.
 
The proposals before the FAC include the controversial Tipaimukh hydroelectric dam which alone will require submergence of 227 sq km of prime forest land in Manipur that will destroy 82.47 lakh trees. Govt to set up Bainguinim garbage plant by Sept 2014

The first garbage treatment plant of Goa which the government plans to set up in Bainguinim will be run on imported technology. It is likely to be commissioned by August-September 2014.
 
Chief minister Manohar Parrikar told STOI that during his visit to Germany recently, he inspected a garbage treatment plant located about 100 kms from Frankfurt. The plant, he said can been operated for 10-12 hours a day and without emitting any foul smell.

JNPT to spend about Rs 50 crore to set up 7-mw wind mill

Largest container port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) is investing around Rs 50 crore to install 7 MW wind capacity, which will help it save around 30 per cent on energy costs, a top official has said.

"We have invited bids from private parties to set up 7 MW capacity and this will help save up to 30 per cent on our power cost," acting chairman NN Kumar told PTI.

Rs 40 crore sanctioned for solar power streetlights

State government has sanctioned nearly Rs 40 crore for installation of solar powered street lights in Uttar Pradesh. Chief secretary Jawed Usmani, who was presiding over a review meeting on Saturday, asked officials of the UP New Energy Development Authority (UPNEDA) to ensure that another Rs 29 crore is granted from the Centre.

United India gets claims for settlement from 4 hydro projects

United India Insurance has received 37 claims for settlement so far for loss and damage to properties in the Uttarakhand flash floods.

Chairman-cum-Managing Director of United India Insurance Milind Kharat told presspersons here on Saturday that four of the claims were related to hydel power projects and the rest were related to loss of property such as buildings, machinery, and vehicles. The estimated claim settlement amount for these is about Rs.500 crore. “We are eager to settle the claims at the earliest. We do expect more claims,” he said.

Goa state pollution control board issues 2000 notices to hotels, industries - Times of India

Goa state pollution control board (GSPCB) has issued around 2,000 showcause notices to industries and hotels till Monday for operating without consent under the Water Act and Air Act.
 
As per the GSPCB statistics, there are over 2,300 industrial units and over 2,500 hotels operating without consent under Water Act and Air Act.
 
 
The GSPCB's move is based on the directions of the central pollution control board.
 

India might impose anti-dumping duty on US, China, Malaysia, Taiwan, major importers of solar cells

 
India might impose anti-dumping duty on four major importers of solar cells and modules in the country after listening to the grievances of domestic manufacturers. Local producers have filed a case last year, alleging that countries such as the US, China, Malaysia and Taiwan were exporting solar equipment to India at "ridiculously low prices" which was "bleeding the local industry".

SAIL, Jindal Steel threatened with fines for clean-power lapses

 Steel Authority of India Ltd and Jindal Steel and Power Ltd were threatened with fines for flouting clean-energy rules as regulators crack down on lapses that undermine the nation’s renewable-credit trading market.

“India’s second- and third-biggest steelmakers, under scrutiny in Chhattisgarh, failed to get the required portion of power from renewable sources in the three years through March,” according to the State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Gamesa Wind Turbines has signed a 46 MW wind power project order with ITC Paperboards and Specialty Papers Division, part of the ITC Group. 

Under this contract Gamesa would be supplying 23X 2MW turbines to ITC at Tagguparthi, Andhra Pradesh. The commissioning is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2014. Joint venture 100MW solar power plant approved in north India

A joint venture 100MW solar project in north India has been approved and is expected to be complete by 2014.

The government cabinet for Uttar Pradesh, the northern state of India, has approved a joint venture between state renewable energy facilitators, Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), and the government hydroelectric enterprise, National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).

Andhra Pradesh receives 35 bids for solar power projects

The Andhra Pradesh government has received bids from 35 companies for setting up solar power projects in the state with combined installation capacity of 418 megawatt. 

According to a press release issued by the Member Secretary, Energy Coordination Cell, the bidders have accepted solar power purchase price of Rs 6.49/unit, which was recommended by a group of ministers earlier.

Inox Wind, an arm of the $2 billion Inox group, which has diverse interests in industrial gases, engineering plastics, refrigerants, chemicals, carbon credits, cryogenic engineering, renewable energy and entertainment, is looking at a 500 MW wind power generation capacity and a topline revenue of nearly Rs 3000 crore in the current fiscal. IDFC PE may exit unlisted waste management firm Hanjer Biotech Energies

Private equity fund IDFC PE along with other institutional investors is seeking a multi-bagger exit from unlisted waste management firm Hanjer Biotech Energies in which they own 51% stake after a failed attempt to sell stake in a public offer in 2012.

The investors, which are seeking a valuation of 3,500 crore, have started the process of hiring a global investment bank. "The exit at this valuation would mean around 5-6 times returns for IDFC PE," said a person with direct knowledge of the deal.

Green building code: No tax cuts, FSI sops for eco-friendly buildings in Maharashtra

After dangling a carrot in front of developers and citizens to promote environment-friendly buildings, the state government seems to have yanked it away for now.

For the last few years, the state had been hinting at providing water and property rebates and providing FSI incentives. But now these sops find no mention in the first-of-its kind " green building code" being readied by the government, said sources.

The new code, which will include mandatory and voluntary reforms, are in the final stages of preparation and will be soon announced, said a senior state official.

Wind power producers in Karnataka to be paid more

Wind power producers in Karnataka who prefer to sell their electricity to the State’s distribution companies at a non-preferential tariff and avail themselves of ‘renewable energy certificates’ (REC), are to be paid a higher tariff.

This is because of the decision of the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission to hike the ‘average pooled purchase cost (APPC)’ – or the average price of power that the State’s distribution companies pay – to Rs 3.07 per kWhr from Rs 2.60 a unit earlier.

The new APPC rate will apply for the period April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014.

Made up of assembled components from second-hand cars, city-based businessman KanakGogoi on Sunday unveiled his latest creation, a battery operated eco-friendly car.
 
The lemon-coloured vehicle, named Green Electric, was made over seven months. The high cost of branded battery-operated eco-friendly cars in the market prompted Kanak to take up the idea to make the car.

The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) has offered to help the government in mapping climatic changes in the country to develop a better understanding about the phenomena.
