Cheap Chinese solar power gear threat to BHEL, others: Government

The government today said that cheaper Chinese solar power equipment as well as overcapacity are posing a threat to domestic manufacturers, including Bharat Heavy Electricals.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Minister Praful Patel said the government is aware of the threat posed by cheap Chinese equipment for BHEL's solar power equipment project.

Going by an estimate, Chinese entities have a share of about 57 per cent of solar equipment using crystalline technology.

The future is green for Venture Capitalists: Frost & Sullivan

Currently, more than half of the VCs have ventured into clean energy investments. Solar technology received the most VC investments between 2006 and 2008 for new technologies and manufacturing capacity expansion.

For waste management training, Delhi govt to send team to Japan

To learn the best practices in solid waste management, sewage disposal, drinking water supply and environment, the Delhi government will send a team to Fukuoka Prefecture (a province) in Japan. Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) of friendship with Hiroshi Ogawa, Governor of Fukuoka Prefecture, at the Japanese Ambassador's residence in the Capital.Prefectures are provinces. There are 47 Prefectures or provinces in Japan.

Low returns forcing farmers to abandon jatropha

Since the price of bio-diesel is kept artificially low in the country, jatropha cultivation in the North-eastern part of the country has remained non-viable and this has led to many farmers abandoning their jatropha plantations in the region.

This was asserted by Kishor Goswami and Hari Kanta Choudhury of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. They were making a joint presentation on jatropha-based bio-diesel at the Omeo Kumar Das Institute here recently.

Renewable energy certificate market crashes as state distribution utilities fail to meet norms

 A fledgling market in clean energy certificates has crashed as state distribution utilities have failed to honour their purchase obligations, putting entrepreneurs and investors in the sunrise sector at risk and portending trouble for the larger cause of environment-friendly power. 

Prices of these renewable energy certificates, a tradable instrument each representing 1,000 units of power generated from renewable sources and sold to the grid, have dropped 45% in the past year because of paucity of buyers and as sellers keep off awaiting better prices.

42,000-mw hydropower projects run out of steam

 Hydropower projects with a combined capacity estimated by experts at about 42,000 megawatt are yet to take off in various states, denying the country the opportunity to reduce its power deficit.

These projects, most of which are in the northeast, could have proved a boon to the power sector that has been crippled by shortage of coal and gas.

Experts say the private developers are discouraged by pre-commissioning hiccups, delays in environmental clearances and agitations over ecological concerns.

Beverage, dairy sector spending on waste water treatment to double by 2016

Indian dairy product and beverage manufacturers’ spending on waste water treatment solutions is projected to almost double from Rs 278 crore in 2011 to Rs 538 crore in 2016. The push towards more environment-friendly manufacturing processes will be spearheaded by companies’ efforts to tap the global market, particularly developed countries like the US.

Developing nations push rich on climate targets ahead of talks

Talks on a new climate change treaty in Qatar next week will not advance unless rich countries promise more ambitious cuts to greenhouse gas emissions, four major developing nations said.

Greenko buys 15 MW of hydel power assets in Himachal

Renewable energy company Greenko has acquired three run-of-the-river hydel power projects with installed capacity of 15 MW.

These hydel assets are located in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.

With this acquisition, Greenko will now have installed capacity of 275 MW. The company is on course to installing 1,000 MW of renewable energy projects, including wind farms by 2015.

Emissions cuts too slow to fight climate change, warns UN report

A UN report on rising greenhouse gas emissions reminded world governments Wednesday that their efforts to fight climate change are far from enough to meet their stated goal of limiting global warming to 2C.

The report by the UN Environment Programme (Unep), released just days before the start of a major climate conference, said the concentration of heat-trapping greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is up about 20% since 2000.

VayuGrid inks MoU with Ethiopia for biofuel park

 VayuGrid, a biofuel supply chain company based in Bangalore, has signed a memorandum of understanding to create a biofuel cluster for its VayuSap — high-yield Pongamia — in Ethiopia.

GE, Ford Collaborate on Alternative Fuel Vehicle Adoption and Research

GE (GE) today announced a collaboration with Ford Motor Co. in which the company will purchase 2,000 new Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrids for its fleet. As part of the collaboration, Ford will jointly market GE’s alternative fuel infrastructure solutions to commercial customers and provide new alternative fuel vehicles for use at GE’s Vehicle Innovation Center.

EU suspends controversial aviation carbon tax

The European Union executive caved in to critics of its contested carbon tax on air travel Monday, offering to "stop the clock" and suspend the measure for a year on flights to and from non-European nations.

BASIC countries call for commitment on climate change

Climate change ministers from Brazil, South Africa, India and China, also known as the BASIC countries, have called on the developed economies to "scale up ambitions" to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to meet the 2-degree target, a week before a climate change conference in Doha, Qatar.

Sulzer Pumps to supply Spanish, Indian CSP projects

Sulzer Pumps is to supply pumps for several concentrated solar power (CSP) projects in Spain and India, the Switzerland-based company announced on Tuesday.

The scope of supply for the orders to Sulzer includes the design, manufacture and installation of cooling water pumps, feed water pumps, condensate extraction pumps and auxiliary pump packages. The pumps will be manufactured and packaged from Sulzer’s global manufacturing network and will be installed in 2013 and 2014.

Wind energy major Gamesa India bags 47.6-MW order from SJVN for upcoming project in Ahmednagar

 Wind energy major Gamesa India today said it has bagged an order to supply 47.60 MW wind farm equipment to the mini-ratna company SJVNBSE 0.51 % for its upcoming project in Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra. 

The engineering, procurement and construction ( EPC) contract involves Gamesa suppling and building a wind farm for SJVN, (formerly Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited) which is a joint venture between the Centre and Himachal Pradesh.

India faces growing pains for its solar market

India may be on its way to becoming a major solar market, but that path is far from obstacle-free. Already reports are emerging about tales of growing pains, including component shortages, dust storms that impair solar projects and policy changes that threaten the use of renewable energy credits to bolster more solar development.
