Airbus teams up with Chinese firm to make green fuel

Airbus has signed a deal with Chinese biofuel producer ENN to jointly explore an alternative fuel for the aviation industry.

Airbus, with its parent company EADS Innovation Works, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ENN, one of the leading biofuel producers in China, to develop the fuel made from algae oil, reported Xinhua.

The deal was struck at the ongoing 9th China International Air Show in Zhuhai, Guangdong province.

Business leaders demand global carbon price at Doha

More than 100 of the world's largest companies are calling for governments to bring in a global carbon price to drive the huge investment needed to deliver substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

Shell, Unilever, EDF Energy, Statoil, Swiss Re and Skanska are among those that have endorsed the Carbon Price Communiqué, coordinated by the Prince of Wales's Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change, ahead of the Doha climate summit at the end of the month.

No nation immune to climate change - World Bank

 All nations will suffer the effects of a warmer world, but it is the world's poorest countries that will be hit hardest by food shortages, rising sea levels, cyclones and drought, the World Bank said in a report on climate change.

Under new World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, the global development lender has launched a more aggressive stance to integrate climate change into development.

"We will never end poverty if we don't tackle climate change. It is one of the single biggest challenges to social justice today," Kim told reporters on a conference call on Friday.

Solar energy to power Shimla

 To meet the ever increasing demand for electricity in Shimla city and to reduce the dependence on hydro-power, the Shimla Municipal Corporation has decided to give final touches to a proposed ‘solar city plan’.

The project is an initiative of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and aimed at developing solar cities to ensure supply of renewable energy. Shimla has been chosen on a pilot basis .

Plan to illuminate village streets with solar power

Stage is all set to illuminate 104 of the Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Grams (villages) with solar streetlights in Allahabad, Kaushambi, Fatehpur and Pratapgarh. In fact, Allahabad region of UP New & Renewable Energy Development Authorities (UPNEDA), has sent a proposal to their headquarters in Lucknow to install a total of 1,680 solar-powered street lights in 104 villages of the region including in 35 villages of Allahabad, 21 each in Kaushambi and Fatehpur and in 28 villages of Pratapgarh after these villages were selected as Dr Ram Manohar Lohia grams for development.

The Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship at Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) had organized a four day boot camp for start-ups in the clean technology space.

India to press for agreement on 2nd commitment period

As the world heads towards another climate conference, India and other developing countries would try to ensure that an agreement is reached on a second commitment period of Kyoto Protocol and legal amendments are put into place to operationalise it. 

However, there is an underlying worry that western developed countries may try to prolong negotiations, and even if legal amendments are adopted, the process of getting them ratified may take a long time.

Gamesa mulls solar power entry

 Wind turbine manufacturer Gamesa is evaluating the prospects of foraying into the solar power industry in the country, a move intended to create a new stream of revenue and strike synergies between two renewable energy sources.

The company, whose role in solar power now is limited to marketing inverters and mobile phone chargers, according to Gamesa India chairman and managing director Ramesh Kymal, wants to take up engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) works. This would mean Gamesa helping in the setting up solar power plants.

India’s $1.4 Billion Solar Plan Thwarted by Supply Delays, Dust

India, planning $1.4 billion of solar-thermal power stations, expects half of the projects to be delayed and some to be scrapped as U.S. supplies stall and dust- clouds diffuse the radiation required to drive generation.

Of the 500 megawatts of projects due to be completed in February and May, only a third of that capacity may be ready on time, said Tarun Kapoor, joint secretary at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Three of the 10 ventures are unlikely to be built, he said in an interview in New Delhi.

Green Climate Fund to Appoint Ajay Mathur as Director Tomorrow

The Green Climate Fund, being set up to distribute emissions-cutting and adaptation money to developing countries from richer nations, will tomorrow appoint Ajay Mathur as director.

Mathur will start in a “bridging” role at least until a permanent executive director is appointed around the middle of next year, Richard Kinley, deputy executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Bonn, said today by phone. Mathur was previously director general of the Indian Bureau of Energy Efficiency in New Delhi, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

NTPC eyes Tungabhadra Steel’s hydel power project

 

To refocus on hydropower after recent setbacks, NTPC Ltd may buy state-owned Tungabhadra Steel Products Ltd’s 204 megawatts (MW) hydel power project, chairman and managing director Arup Roy Choudhury said.

Tungabhadra Steel was set up as a joint venture between the state governments of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, which later became a central public sector unit in 1967 with the central government acquiring a 50.5% stake in the company, according to the department of public enterprises. Solar Plus enters Kerala market

Solar Plus, a company focusing on solar power solutions, is expecting monthly revenues of Rs 25 lakh from the state.

The company launched its operations in the state by introducing 39 products at a function held in Kochi. "With the sunlight falling on one square feet for six hours, five units of power can be produced per day," said Anil R Thampi, director of the company.

DDA to start recycling wastewater, to begin with at its headquarters

For residents of areas built by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), such as Vasant Kunj and Dwarka, scarcity of water is an everyday problem.

The DDA now plans to tackle this perennial problem by recycling wastewater. And it is starting from its own home. DDA's headquarters Vikas Sadan, near INA, will soon have a wastewater recycling plant that is expected to salvage more than one lakh gallons (about four lakh litres) of water per day.

Global electricity demand to rise 70 per cent by 2035: IEA

  Global demand for electricity could rise by over 70 percent between 2010 and 2035 driven largely by rising demand from emerging economies, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said on Monday.

That was an annual average of 2.2 percent per year, the IEA said in its World Energy Outlook. Over 80 percent of the growth in the power sector will come from non-OECD countries, with China (38 per cent) and India (13 per cent) taking the lion's share, the IEA on Monday.

GE Wins Indian Wind Share as Suzlon, Vestas Suffer Market Shift

A shift in India’s wind market toward bigger, more efficient projects is benefiting General Electric Co. (GE) as dominant turbine suppliers Suzlon Energy Ltd. (SUEL) and Vestas Wind Systems A/S (VWS) see cash dwindle.
