India to diversify energy sourcing

India is increasingly moving beyond West Asia in search for energy sources. For a country that imported over 76% of its fossil fuel requirements in 2011-12 for an estimated $140 billion (Rs 7,48,580 crore) from the region, against $100 billion (Rs 5,34,700 crore) in 2010-11, making an immediate geographic shift is easier said than done.

But, hectic diplomatic parleys for energy, including shale gas from the US and Canada, LNG from Brunei, and more coal and uranium from Australia, are part of a ‘not to be dependent on one region’ policy.

India’s total energy requirement... Read more..

India faces many challenges in building 'green'

In Germany, environmentally conscious consumers can build green, energy-efficient homes without burning huge holes in their pockets. But is that a practical option in India?

Building energy-efficient 'green' homes sounds like a great idea in theory. But in practice, especially in developing countries, it can be extremely expensive.

In India, there are no direct incentives for building energy-efficient homes or commercial spaces. The Indian housing industry faces several problems while trying to be eco-friendly, according to international real estate... Read more..

Green Technologies Help Companies Meet Sustainability Goals, Improve Bottom Lines

As businesses strive to meet their sustainability goals while meeting their obligation to their own bottom lines, it is becoming increasingly clear that these two goals are not in conflict, but in fact are complementary. A recent deal completed by my company, Flareum Technologies, illustrates just how going green can do more than improve a company’s reputation: it can also save them money.

A few weeks ago, Flareum Technologies completed installation of a solar-powered air conditioning system to cool the Bangalore offices of Siemens. This 10 TR system uses the sun’s rays and an... Read more..

India farmers pause for a cotton-picking minute to mull sustainability

When Indian icon Mahatma Gandhi took up the baton for home-grown cotton a century ago, he may not have realized the devastating impact its cultivation would have on the land he so loved.

Cotton is a thirsty plant and parts of India are drought-prone. But the intensive farming process for cotton leaches the soil and requires high pesticide and fertilizer use that pollutes further downstream.

Now in the southeastern district of Warangal, dotted with statues to the independence leader in his trademark cotton dhoti, a project to... Read more..

'2nd gen biofuels can meet half of India's gasoline demands'

India can meet nearly half of its gasoline demands by producing second-generation biofuels from its huge agricultural residue, according to a top official of a global bio-tech organisation.

He said second generation biofuels have the potential to meet up to 59 per cent of India's gasoline demand in 2020. "... Read more..

Electric Vehicles: Transitioning to a Sustainable Future

The US has a car culture. In 2010, 95% of American households owned a car and 85% of Americans drove to work each day. This is radically different from the lifestyle most Americans had after World War II, when 40% of Americans did not own cars. China and India are rapidly adopting the US living standard, and cars are flooding the streets. In 2011, China had 100 million cars on its streets, or about 10 percent of the more than 1 billion cars on streets worldwide. On average, 9.51 million automobiles were added each year between 2006 and 2010, exceeding the government’s ability to add roads... Read more..
