8-year sops for renewable energy projects likely in 12th Plan: Abdullah

 The 12th Plan may include eight-year-long generation-based incentives and depreciation allowance to boost energy from new and renewable sources.

This was indicated by Farooq Abdullah, Minister for New and Renewable Energy, at the India Carbon Market Conclave here on Thursday.

Abdullah said, “The provision for inclusion of these incentives have been discussed with the Planning Commission and I have requested them to offer these for a larger period of eight years rather than five given during the 11th Plan.”

Finnish power generation company Fortum, which focusses on low emissions, resource-efficiency and energy security, sees energy-hungry India as a market with huge potential. Rising number of top firms believe climate change is threat to business

Major companies are increasingly concerned that they are at risk from climate change in the face of recent extreme weather events such as drought and floods, according to a report published on Wednesday.

More than one-third (37%) see the physical risks of a changing climate as a real and present danger, up from just 10% two years ago, says the latest Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Global 500 report, a survey of top global companies.

Four-fifths (81%) identify climate change risks to their business operations, supply chains and plans, up from 71% last year.

Rajasthan has most solar project that have achieved financial closure

Rajasthan has the highest number of solar power projects that are in the process of implementation or have achieved financial closure, data provided by the nodal agency for the programme NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVN) showed.

Under the first phase of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) the government had, in January 2011, signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) for 28 solar PV projects of 5MW each - a combined capacity of 140MW.

Agartala to be Northeast India's first solar city

To reduce dependency on conventional energy, the Tripura government Wednesday announced ambitious plans to make Agartala a 'solar city', replacing at least 10 percent of usual power use by solar energy.

"Agartala city would be the first 'solar city' in northeast India within the next few years," Tripura's Urban Development Minister Manik Dey said after inaugurating a 50 kilowatt solar power plant at the Agartala Municipal Council head office here.

Could businesses rescue the UN's carbon offset scheme?

Businesses must lead calls for governments to adopt more ambitious national carbon emission reduction targets, according to an overview board appointed to address the crisis afflicting the UN's flagship carbon offsetting scheme.

Panel members told reporters that "confidence in the carbon markets has already evaporated considerably" and as such the UN's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) "could collapse" if urgent action is not taken.

Wipro to sell water purification and treatment business to Earth Water Group

Four years after diversifying into water purification and treatment, soaps-to-software major Wipro is selling the business to NewDelhi-based Earth Water Group (EWG), said two independent sources aware of the development.

The deal size is likely to be between Rs 45-50crore and a formal announcement is due in a fortnight.

IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, is investing $20 million in Nereus India Alternative Energy Fund, India’s first dedicated renewable energy fund that will promote the development and use of clean and renewable energy technologies, helping reduce the country’s growing carbon footprint.

Centre withholds release of funds for JNNURM works

 Not fulfilling the mandatory reforms as laid down for funding under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) has led to stalling of release of funds from the Union Government to GVMC.

The Centre withholds 10 per cent of the funds for work completed as long as the urban local body does not fulfil them. So far Rs.140 crore for works completed under the seven-year urban mission have to be released to the corporation, according to sources in GVMC.

Welspun ties up funds for 50 MW solar project

 Welspun Energy, on Monday, said it had secured a long-term project funding of Rs.355 crore for its 50-MW solar power project in Rajasthan. In a statement here, the company said the loan had been secured from a consortium of lenders comprising three public sector banks and one infrastructure finance firm.

Welspun had, in January this year, signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd., power grading arm of state-owned power producer NTPC.

The 50-MW solar project is expected to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2013, the company said.

Adani Power expects to earn Rs 600 crore from carbon credits

Adani Power today said it expects to earn as much as Rs 600 crore from trading of carbon credits from two of its units at 4,620 MW Mundra project in Gujarat.

Also, Mundra plant’s phase III “becomes the world’s first coal fired thermal project to receive carbon credits from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)”, the company said.

Phase III, having two units of 660 MW each, has received carbon credits under the Clean Development Mechanism.

Model Solar Salt Farm to Come Up in Gujarat

A model solar farm shall be established in Gujarat based on the internationally patented technology of the Central Salt Marine & Chemical Research Institute (CSMCRI) to manufacture export-grade high purity salt.

"A model farm will be set up in cooperation with the Gujarat government on 10-20 acres of land having a scientific design and layout suitable for a solar salt works," Dr Pushpito Ghosh, Director CSMCRI, told PTI.

"Our internationally patented technology will be used at this farm to manufacture over 99 per cent NaCl (Sodium Chloride) purity salt," he said.

UN’s CDM offset scheme issues one billionth carbon credit

The UN's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) offset scheme reached a major milestone earlier today with the issuance of its billionth officially approved Certified Emission Reduction (CER) carbon credit.

The landmark credit was issued to a manufacturing plant in India, which qualified for the CDM by switching its energy source from coal and oil to locally sourced biomass, delivering 17,475 tonnes of carbon emission savings a year.

Solar energy to illuminate 20 RWA offices

At least 20 resident welfare offices in the New Delhi district will soon be powered by the sun. A proposal has been approved for a pilot project under which porta cabins provided by the government to RWAs for office use will have rooftop solar panels.
