In Parts of India, Wind Energy Proving Cheaper than Coal
Due to the cost of rising coal prices and a decrease in the cost of wind power (which has dropped considerably in recent years), the cost of wind power in some parts of India has fallen below that of electricity from coal power plants (not even taking health or global warming externalities into account). The cost of wind power is primarily dependent on the average wind speed in the location where wind turbines are to be installed. It is also dependent on the cost of labour required to install and maintain the wind turbines. Another factor that affects the cost of wind farm... Read more.. Date : Jul 27 Source: CleanTechnica

Solar cells that convert windows into energy producersResearchers have fashioned a new transparent solar cell that will not only permit windows at homes to generate power but also enable people to see outside. The University of California Los Angeles team reported a new kind of polymer solar cell (PSC) that produces energy by absorbing mainly infrared light, not visible light, making the cells nearly 70 percent transparent. They made the PSC from a photoactive plastic that converts infrared light into an electrical current. These polymer solar cells have attracted great attention due to their advantages over competing solar cell... Read more.. Date : Jul 23 Source: Times of India

Power sector sweating over environment ministry's draft rulesThe ministry of environment and forests (MOEF) has proposed new rules, applicable from January 2014, which are seen as imposing conditions too tough to be met by the power sector. The new rules make it mandatory for thermal power plants located beyond 500km of the pit head (dedicated source of coal) to use coal with calorific value of at least 4,000 Kcal/Kg, or put in place specified clean technologies. The latter option may lead to a change in the basic structure of the plants itself, which those running power units say is an impractical proposal. If implemented, the new rules are... Read more..
