Can a string of hydel projects set up by HNIs solve India's power riddle? As a slogan, "power to the people" predates Magna Carta and representative democracy. These days, as a mundane matter of daily utility, India is living up to the age-old message in its own, somewhat literal, way. With its showpiece thermal plants running short of capacity - as much as 37,000 MW of installed capacity is lying idle for want of coal and natural gas - and grandiose plans for a nuclear-powered future stuck, India is reeling under a power crisis. Recently, the warning shot came from Lucknow - the UP government issued an "advisory" to shops and malls in the National... Read more.. Date : Jul 15 Source: Times of India

Global economic growth in 2012, 2013 to be less than expected: IEAGlobal economic growth this year and next will be less than expected, the IEA said on Thursday, because of a weaker outlook for China and the US and with the eurozone crisis sapping demand. An "exceptionally challenging macroeconomic backdrop" over the past two months had forced the IEA to cut its estimates, it said, to 3.3 percent this year from the previous 3.5 percent. In terms of oil demand, the IEA left its 2012 growth forecast at around 800,000 barrels per day (bpd) to around 89.9 million bpd, with 2013 gaining a "relatively muted" 1.0 mbd to 90.9 mbpd, led by Asia.... The plants process around 7,600 tonnes of waste daily and produce more than 40 MW of power. Sources in Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA) explained that "the four WTE plants incinerate waste by 90%. What remains is disposed of safely at the landfill site.
