Green buildings gain momentum in India

Noida near Delhi is one of the nodes of the green building movement. The builder 3C was an early mover. 3C built what was the country's largest green apartment complex. Coalition confirms introduction of mandatory carbon reporting

The government is today expected to confirm that it will introduce mandatory carbon reporting rules requiring around 1,800 of the UK's largest listed companies to report annually on their greenhouse gas emissions.

Writing in The Guardian, deputy prime minister Nick Clegg, who will tomorrow represent the UK at the Rio +20 Earth Summit in Brazil, confirmed that long-awaited emission reporting rules would come into effect from next April.

Power Finance of India Says Lending Rising on Renewables Growth

Power Finance Corp. (POWF), India’s largest state lender to electricity utilities, said a renewable-energy boom will support growth in loans as the country seeks to double clean-power capacity by 2017.

Loan disbursal at Power Finance increased 31 percent in the year through March, compared with a 25 percent gain the previous year, Chairman Satnam Singh said in an interview in London. The lender expects to maintain that pace as growth in renewable energy counters a decline in coal-power projects.

Surat civic body to install solar panel on science centre.

Following the matra of Going Green, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has called for tenders to install 100 KW solar panel atop its Science center building located at city light area of the city. Use of Solar energy to meet day to day requirements of the civic body, is envisaged and planned. SMC plans to produce at least 15 to 30 per cent of its requirement of energy by the combination of Wind and Solar power in coming three years.

BHEL to make solar cells at Sakoli

Public sector giant Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd is planning a huge foray into non-conventional energy equipment. It is planning to set up a photo voltaic (PV) cells and solar panels plant, the first of its kind in the country. This would be part of the investment BHEL is planning at Sakoli which is part Union heavy industries minister Praful Patel's constituency Bhandara.

Singapore to help Delhi draw potable water from sewage

Usage of treated sewage water for drinking purpose is set to become a reality in the city. Delhi Jal Board and Singapore Cooperation Enterprise are to sign an agreement on Wednesday for treatment and recycling of waste water at the Coronation Pillar sewage treatment plant to potable levels.

Singapore will not only assist with the technology that is already in use in the small island state but Singapore-based Temasek Foundation will also be funding 70% of the total project cost.

Welspun Energy in talks to sell stake, hopes to raise $150-200 million

Welspun Energy is in talks with renewable energy funds to sell a small stake in the company and raise $150-200 million for investments in wind energy farms. The associate company of the $3.5-billion Welspun Group has mandated investment banking firm Macquarie to advice on the sale of a stake up to 15 per cent, people close to the development said. Welspun Energy plans to invest $1 billion in construction of two wind farms in Karnataka in the next five years.

Mumbai-based scientist Pushkar Vaidya will lead the Rio+20 India Programme, a part of the three-day conference that begins in Brazil Wednesday. The India edition will consist of a certification programme for schools in India and a workshop for corporate houses.

Diamantaire sees glitter in green energy

A city-based diamantaire has set up, what is touted to be the state's first solar energy production equipments plant, at Pipodhara village on the outskirts of Surat.

The plant, set up by Goldi Green Technology with an investment of Rs 350 crore, will produce solar modules and panels.

The first phase of operations of this plant located, some 20 km off Surat city, will begin in 15 days' time.

Subsidy withdrawal hits sales of electric vehicles

 The withdrawal of subsidy by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) on March 31 has drastically affected the sales of electric two-wheelers.

According to manufacturers, their business has fallen by over 70 per cent in the last three months, and, if the government does not take proactive steps, there are chances the industry might find itself in ‘hot water’.

Manufacturers says they are also facing closure of dealership with around 250 dealers having already closed their operations in the last three months.

During 2011 40 GW of wind power was put into operation

 

 During 2011, an estimated 40 GW of wind energy capacity was put into operation, more than any other renewable technology, increasing global wind farm capacity by 20% to approximately 238 GW.

Around 50 countries added wind turbines capacity during 2011; at least 68 countries have more than 10 MW of reported capacity, with 22 of these passing the 1 GW level; and the top 10 countries account for nearly 87% of total capacity.

2 biomedical waste plants in state capital

The state capital will soon get two new biomedical waste disposal plants which aim to solve the problem of hospital waste management. One plant will come up at Nagdi and the other one at Namkum.

Member secretary of the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board S K Sinha said, "The plants will be built, operated and owned by SMS Infrastructure, a private company from Nagpur. We have given the no-objection certificate to the company and they have started the work," he added. The two plants will work independently without interference of the board in its day-to-day functioning.

Lanco to exit hydropower business

In an indication of growing stress in the Indian power sector, Lanco Infratech Ltd has decided to exit hydropower generation and is in talks with SN Power of Norway for selling its stake in the business.

“The talks are on with SN Power for Lanco’s hydropower business,” a person aware of the development said, requesting anonymity. “It will all depend upon the valuations.”

Jindal Power to Invest $7.7 Billion in Hydro: Corporate India

Jindal Power Ltd., a unit of India’s biggest steelmaker by market value, plans to spend $7.7 billion on hydroelectric projects over the next decade as a coal shortage forces utilities to cut dependence on fossil fuels.

Solar Boom Heads to Japan Creating $9.6 Billion Market: Energy

Japan is poised to overtake Germany and Italy to become the world’s second-biggest market for solar power as incentives starting July 1 drive sales for equipment makers from Yingli Green Energy Holdings Co. to Kyocera Corp. (6971)

Industry Minister Yukio Edano set today a premium price for solar electricity that’s about triple what industrial users now pay for conventional power. India''s deal with France on Jaitapur nuke plant likely this

India today said it hopes to clinch later this year a deal with France for multiple nuclear energy units at Jaitapur in Maharashtra to produce 9,900 MW of power.

"Negotiations are going on and are progressing well. We hope to seal the deal later this year," official sources said referring to the proposed pact involving six nuclear power units of 1,650 MW each.

Energy efficient ratings to be made mandatory for TV sets

 The energy efficiency ratings, which are currently seen on refrigerators and air-conditioners, will soon be applicable to LCD, plasma and CRT categories in television sets. The government has exempted LED category so far, said Deepanshu Ahuja, project manager at the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). Currently, these ratings are voluntary for television sets, but soon it will be made mandatory, he added.

The BEE is a statutory board under the Union ministry of power, which first introduced the energy efficiency norms and made it mandatory for companies to implement.

Green energy to energize 430 police station in MP

 Madhya Pradesh Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (MPUVNL) is going to energize some 430 police stations of the state with green energy under Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) in this fiscal, officials said.

Two years ago, MPUVNL had lightened up 38 police stations in naxal-affected Balaghat district of the state.

"We have received Rs 12 crore from the police headquarters here to light up 430 police stations on March 31," MPUVNL executive engineer Shrikant Deshmukh told TOI.
