With India facing electricity shortage coupled with the ministry of new and renewable energy promoting the use of solar energy devices with a 30% subsidy on solar products, water heater companies like Racold Thermo expect solar water heaters to become big growth drivers over the next few years.

Universal access to energy would herald enormous economic and social benefits

 Providing modern access to energy for all the world’s citizens is achievable and would have only a minor impact on global energy demand and carbon dioxide emissions, according to IEA Executive Director Maria Van der Hoeven.

Govt plans to roll out 3,000-MW solar power projects

The Government of India is working on a plan to roll out 3,000 MW of grid connected solar power projects in phase 2 of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission.

“The Government also has plans to set up four solar thermal power projects through the Solar Energy Corporation of India,” Mr Tarun Kapoor, Joint Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), said in a statement.

Fuel-saving power of cars to be rated

Car buyers in India will have a choice of buying their models based on fuel efficiency from April 1, 2013. Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) director general Ajay Mathur said exactly a year after consumers would be able to choose cars based on their fuel-saving capacity.

The move is aimed at reducing fuel consumption, saving carbon emissions and making travel more economical for a car user. Global air transport industry to cut half carbon emission by 2050

The International Air Transport Association ( IATA) asked for a comprehensive global solution on aviation emissions to be negotiated through the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). Labelling fuel efficiency mandatory for passenger cars from April 2013

A special 'star labelling' indicating fuel efficiency will be compulsory for all passenger cars from April 1, 2013, a top official of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) said on Wednesday.

"All passenger cars will have to be labelled for their fuel efficiency from April 1, 2013," BEE Director General Ajay Mathur told reporters.

India setting up cell for attracting investments in new energy

India is setting up an Investment Promotion Cell for the energy sector to provide a single point of contact for investors, Minister of New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah has said.

In the next five years, the country plans to invest $ 50 billion in renewable energy, including $ 19 billion in wind, $ 25 billion in solar and $ 3 billion each in Hydro and Biomass segments, he said.

Welspun Energy to Invest $1 Billion in Two Wind Farms in India

Welspun Energy Ltd., an Indian independent power producer, plans to invest $1 billion to build two wind farms in the state of Karnataka in the next five years.

The company, a unit of Welspun Group, said it signed agreements with the government of Karnataka for projects with 100 megawatts and 750 megawatts of capacity, according to a statement released today. Welspun is also India’s biggest photovoltaic developer.

Needed Now: $36 Trillion for a Clean Energy Future

The world needs to invest an extra $36 trillion in clean-energy technologies between now and 2050 in order to have a shot at limiting long-term global temperature rise to 2 degrees C, the International Energy Agency said on Monday.

Bharti Infratel keen on solar energy solutions from global companies

Tower company Bharti Infratel will soon invite bids for buying solar energy solutions worth $300 million from international suppliers for powering about 8,000 sites in its bid to cut diesel costs, executives aware of the development said.

Sweden's Flexenclosure AB, China's Huawei and ZTE are among the key providers of environment-friendly energy solutions and are likely to pitch for the upcoming tender. It is not known if Bharti will opt for multiple vendors or go with a single one.

India to Seek 15% of $50 Billion for Renewables From Overseas

India may seek at least $7.5 billion of the $50 billion it’s planning to invest in clean energy in five years from foreign direct investment, a government official said.

“We’d like a bare minimum of 15 percent of that coming as FDI over the next five years,” Gireesh Pradhan, secretary at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, said today in an interview in London.

India Banks Face Solar Setback as Projects Delayed, Fined

Banks may restrict loans to Indian solar projects after the government fined 13 projects for delays, including one owned by Indian Oil Corp. (IOCL)

An inquiry found 13 of 20 projects in northwestern Rajasthan state missed their deadline, according to a list from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

“All delayed projects were fined,” Tarun Kapoor, the ministry’s joint secretary, said by phone. Indian Oil didn’t immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment.

The U.S. still lagged behind other nations in 2011 in the share of energy it gets from renewable sources, in spite of a more than 300% increase in funding for green power projects over the last decade.

New data encoding method cuts energy needs for next-gen memory

A new data-encoding scheme that slashes more than 30 percent of the energy needed to write data onto new memory cards that use "phase-change memory" (PCM) - a competitor to flash memory that has big backing from industry heavyweights - has been unveiled this week.
