Centre examining 7 Arunachal hydel projects

Even as the agitation against mega dams in Assam gathers momentum, the Centre is currently examining the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) of seven private hydropower projects proposed to be set up in Arunachal Pradesh. 

Of the seven projects, three are over 1000 MW capacity, including the 1000 MW Siyom, 1140 MW Demwe Upper and 1000 MW Naying hydropower project.

1922 built hydel project re-commissioned

The Sonapani mini hydel project, set up in 1922, has been officially commissioned in Meghalaya.

The 1.5 MW Sonapani Mega Watt hydel project will add to the Meghalaya grid. Meghalaya, once a power surplus state, presently generates 186.70 MW and has a share of 200 MW from central utilities.

Chief Minister Mukul Sangma Thursday stressed the need to address the power requirements of the state through renewable energy resources.

Infrastructure development key to long-term energy security: FICCI

India needs to develop its infrastructure and increase production efficiency in the oil and gas sector to secure its long-term energy security, a leading industry lobby said Sunday. 

"Domestic oil and gas industry needs to address issues such as the deficit of manpower and the impact of inadequate and ageing infrastructure," said a joint study by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry ( FICCI) and consultancy firm Ernst and Young.

Weaving a success story in organic farming of paddy using green manure on three lakh hectares of land without use of the urea, a chemical fertilizer, Bihar has taken a lead in sustainable agriculture by developing vermiculture on a large scale with involvement of 20 entrepreneurs and 40,000 farmers.

India’s Karnataka Delays Solar Auction Results on Legal Snag

 A legal snag prevented India’s Karnataka state from opening bids from companies including Tata Power Co. that are seeking contracts to build 80 megawatts of solar power plants, an official said.

Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd., a state-run agency, had planned to open the bids on Dec. 2 and announce the winners. Tablet pellets help reduce power bill in steel plants

 A team of experts from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has developed a steel-making model which helps reduce energy consumption. After conducting the research on various aspects of steel making, the team has concluded that if companies use tablet pellets in their furnace, they can effectively bring down energy consumption.

SKF India to expand capacity at Ahmedabad unit

 Bearings maker SKF India said it plans to expand manufacturing capacity at its unit in Ahmedabad. 

"We manufacture industrial bearings at our Ahmedabad unit. We are now looking at expanding the capacity of medium and large size bearings for industrial use," SKF India Managing Director Shishir Joshipura told reporters here. 

The unit will cater to sectors like renewable energy, construction and railways, among others, he said. 

The company has 27 per cent market share in organised sector for bearings manufacturing in India.

Construction causes polluted air: BMC

 The environment status report published by the BMC in September this year lays the blame of greater pollution levels on construction in the city. 

The report reiterates what has been observed for the past couple of years. A report concluded by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute last year had blamed construction activity for contributing to the maximum amount of pollution.

CCP to use unused Rs 2.16 crore for solid waste management

The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has sought switching of government funds worth Rs 2.16 crore for works under solid waste management (SWM).

The CCP found that it had funds worth Rs 2.16 crore sanctioned by the government for certain works under SWM that was unutilized. Much of this money had been given by the government for land acquisition to set up waste treatment sites.

Govt moots 17cr plan to restore St Inez creek

A meeting of the state-level steering committee (SLSC) of the Jawaharlal Nehru national urban renewal mission ( JNNURM) to be held on Thursday proposes a 17 crore project to restore the St Inez creek. Angry locals, however, term it "concretization" of the 1.5km water body.

Maersk launches shipping biofuel experiment

Shipping giant Maersk Line is testing the performance of algae-based biofuels as a means of cutting emissions from a vessel en route from northern Europe to India.

Blends of between seven and 100 per cent biofuels will be used in the auxiliary test engine of the Maersk Kalmar, a 300m container ship, during its month-long, 6,500 nautical mile voyage.

Siemens foray into solar photovoltaic plant business

 Siemens Ltd, the Indian unit of Germany's Siemens AG, said on Wednesday it will foray into engineering, procurement and construction solutions (EPC) business for solar photovoltaic plants in India. 

The engineering firm has already executed 160 MWp solar projects the world and more than 1,200 megawatts of equipment supply for solar projects, it said in a statement.
