Disdain in DurbanThe European Union's so-called "Durban Roadmap" -- a plan to conclude negotiations on a legally binding treaty by 2015 -- has been gaining traction with other parties at the COP17 climate negotiations. But the United States is still putting off moves towards a legally binding treaty.
Thomasz Chruszczow, head of the Polish delegation speaking on behalf of the EU, said the idea was advancing because many parties see that the goal of keeping global warming within two degrees requires urgent action. He pointed out that the UN's scientific bodies have issued a spate of reports... Read more.. Date : Dec 3 Source: Mail & Guardian

India decries trade barriers 'disguised' as climate action
The success of future climate change negotiations could be undermined by unilateral policies adopted by rich nations that work as restrictive trade barriers, Indian public officials and environmentalists are warning. They complain unfair trade rules are being imposed, thinly veiled as climate protection initiatives. “Of late, unilateral measures have appeared on the international scene that clearly constitute disguised restrictions on international trade,” Jayanthi Natarajan, India’s minister of state for environment and forestry, told a recent gathering in New Delhi... Climate change talks tied in knotsTalks at the climate change conference have predictably bogged down over funding and over the insistence of the first world countries that emerging economies like India and China also commit to legally binding and higher reduction of carbon emission. Countries like Japan, Canada, Russia and New Zealand have decided to back out of the Kyoto Protocol, the only legally binding treaty that requires 37 developed countries to reduce amount of CO2 they released. The European Union has made it clear that it would agree to more carbon reduction only if emerging economies like China... Read more.. Date : Dec 3 Source: The Tribune

Shifting geopolitics shake UN climate talksNew tensions and alignments are emerging at the UN talks here, reflecting subtle but far-reaching changes in the geopolitics of climate change. Delegates and veteran observers say the shifts challenge the very heart of the nearly two-decade-old climate process, which until now has neatly divided the world into two blocs -- the north and the south, the rich and the poor. But whether these changes will drive the negotiations towards a potentially catastrophic failure by next Friday's close or whether they will break the deadlock remains unclear, say these sources. ... EU fights global warming in a cold climate
European Union negotiators leading the push to keep U.N. climate talks on track are fighting a sense of despondency as the struggle to save the euro has pushed the one to save the planet down the priority list. In the United States, seen as the biggest single obstacle to a new global climate deal, academic opinion says an "iron law" means economics trumps the environment in times of crisis. "When policies focused on economic growth confront politics focused on emissions reductions, it is economic growth that will win out every time," said Roger Pielke, a professor... Read more.. This is the first time that China has mentioned a possible timetable regarding its greenhouse gas emissions. China... Read more.. Date : Dec 2 Source: China Daily

"The U.S. is committed to meet our share of the total effort," Jonathan Pershing, the U.S. special climate envoy, told reporters on Thursday. More than... Read more.. Date : Dec 2 Source: Reuters
