U.S. Will Loan $18.9 Million for SolarWorld Exports to India

The U.S. Export-Import Bank approved an $18.9 million loan for an Indian solar power project that will import photovoltaic panels from SolarWorld AG’s California unit.

The funding will allow Tatith Energies to buy the crystalline-based devices from the manufacturer and construction services from North Chelmsford, Massachusetts-based American Capital Energy for its 5-megawatt plant in the western state of Gujarat, according to an e-mailed statement from the Washington- based lender.

Rich nations make empty pledges in contributing to fast-track climate fund

 A fast-track fund of $30 billion from the developed world to the poorest countries was one key trade-off against emerging economies like India accepting international scrutiny of their climate actions at Copenhagen. But two years on, the rich countries have contributed only 1% of the amount ($320 million) against that. 

A study by International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) has pointed out that though the rich countries have pledged $25 billion on the face of it, but $320 million have been routed through the UN.

Google quits plans to make cheap renewable energy

 Google Inc has abandoned an ambitious project to make renewable energy cheaper than coal, the latest target of Chief Executive Larry Page's moves to focus the Internet giant on fewer efforts.

Google said on Tuesday that it was pulling the plug on seven projects, including Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal as well as a Wikipedia-like online encyclopedia service known as Knol.

The plans, which Google announced on its corporate blog, represent the third so-called "spring cleaning" announcement that Google has made since Google co-founder Page took the reins in April.

Blackstone eyes $500-$720 million deals a year in India

 U.S. private-equity giant Blackstone Group (BX.N) expects to invest roughly $500 million to $720 million a year in India over the next few years, a top official said on Tuesday.

Weak markets are prompting capital-hungry entrepreneurs to knock on the doors of private-equity investors, and valuations are coming down, Akhil Gupta, chairman and managing director of Blackstone India, told the Reuters India Investment Summit.

ONGC May Give NOC For Cairn-Vedanta Deal By This Year-End

State-owned explorer Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. may give its 'no-objection certificate' or NOC to Cairn Energy Plc's stake sale in its Indian unit to Vedanta Resources by the year-end, reports said, quoting Chairman Sudhir Vasudeva.

The NOC will be given after Cairn Energy, its Indian arm Cairn India and the mining group, sign a legally binding agreement accepting to share royalty and pay cess on the most important Rajasthan oilfields.

'Carbon' becomes dirty word for climate investors

In a sign of the tough times facing the carbon sector, the Carbon Markets and Investors' Association last month dropped the word "carbon" from its name.

The group, which represents more than 50 firms that finance and invest in emissions reduction, is now the Climate Markets and Investors' Association (CMIA).

"The new name reflects both the need and potential for the diversification of the role of the private sector in combating climate change," said Miles Austin, director of the CMIA.

India to launch shale gas exploration bid during 12th Plan

Joining the global race to tap unconventional hydrocarbon sources to meet energy needs, India will launch its maiden bid round for exploration of shale gas during the 12th Plan Period (2012-17).

"The Government of India is planning first round of shale gas during 12th Plan Period (2012-17) after assessment of resources is completed," Directorate General of Hydrocarbon (DGH) Director General S K Srivastava said at the Shale Gas India 2011 conference here.

Get ready for extreme weather, warns UN report

A United Nations body has warned of increase in extreme heat waves, drought and intensity of drought because of climate change and had asked countries to invest more to adapt to new spree of global warming linked disasters.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) headed by RK  Pachauri on Saturday said extreme weather events had increased since 1950, particularly daily temperature extreme and heat waves.

Dumping waste in open a criminal offence in Kerala

 A division bench of the Kerala High Court Monday directed the state police to register criminal cases against all those who dump waste on the streets.

The bench of Justice C.N. Ramachandran Nair and Justice P.S. Gopinathan asked all the local self-governing bodies in the state to ensure that no garbage was dumped in the open.

JSW Energy: High cost, low merchant tariff add to worries

The business model adopted by JSW Energy is one of the riskiest in the power industry. It mainly buys fuel, or coal, from the spot market and sells power in the open market. Adverse movements in fuel and selling prices has led to the company's market capitalisation eroding by almost twothird over the past one year.

RIL, BP form JV to market natural gas in India

 Reliance Industries and BP have incorporated India Gas Solutions, a 50:50 joint venture that will compete with existing gas marketing firms such as Gail India, the Adani group and Gujarat Gas, in which Britain's BP is selling its controlling stake.

BP's international gas fields and Reliance's domestic output will give the joint venture an edge in the Indian market, where exiting players are grappling with diminishing domestic output and high cost of imports, analysts said.

 India and Canada have agreed to extend co-operation in the field of renewable energy. An official statement issued here said that the matter was discussed when Ms Christy Clark, Premier of British Columbia, Canada met Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Minister of New and Renewable Energy.

150 MW solar power plant to be set up at Dhule soon

 A 150 MW solar power plant will be set up in Dhule with financial assistance of Euro 250 million from KFW, a German investment bank. The project is claimed to be one of the biggest in the country.

 Despite the buzz word 'going green' catching up globally, India appears to have the dubious distinction of earmarking the least funds for protecting the environment. 

The country is spending only 0.012 per cent of its GDP for addressing its primary green concerns including climate change, conservation of lakes and rivers, biodiversity, forests and wildlife, ensuring the welfare of animals and prevention and abatement of pollution.

Maybank Starts $500 Million Private Equity Fund for Renewables

 Malayan Banking Bhd. (MAY) agreed with Maybank MEACP Pte of Singapore to start a $500 million private equity fund for renewable energy in Asia, according to a statement from Maybank.

The 10-year fund will have a first tranche of $87.5 million, of which Maybank will contribute $50 million. Energy-efficiency labelling for laptops set to gather pace

The newly introduced Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) labelling regime for laptops is set to gain traction in the coming days, with one more major manufacturer about to adopt it and others getting ready to follow suit, according to the Manufacturers' Association of Information Technology (MAIT).

To qualify for the label, BEE Star version 1, laptops have to meet specified energy efficiency parameters. BEE is a statutory body under the Ministry of Power.

DJB on path to recycle resources

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is aiming at exploring more advanced technologies to harness and reuse its resources like sewage and biogas.

The city’s water utility will sign an MoU with Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) on Tuesday for a pilot project regarding the conversion of biogas produced at its sewage plants to compressed natural gas (CNG). World Bank plans $ 1.5-bn investment in Indian energy sector

The World Bank expects to invest about USD 1.5 billion in the country's fast growing energy sector over the next two years, according to a top official. 

 
The multilateral lender, which has a long association with the Indian energy sector, has already put USD 4 billion in the segment.

Treated wastewater to be used for irrigation

In May, Noida Authority introduced the Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) technology in two sewage treatment plants in the city. Six months on, it claims that the new technology has yielded favourable results and the quality of treated water has improved significantly. The levels of organic pollutants in treated water have gone down and the average level of BOD in water has reduced to just about 10 mg per litre. The Authority will soon begin using this treated water for construction and irrigation purposes.
