GE Names Banmali Agrawala as CEO of India Energy Unit

 General Electric Co. Wednesday named Banmali Agrawala as chief executive officer for its energy business in India.

Mr. Agrawala, who was most recently working with Tata Power Co. as executive director for strategy and business development, will assume charge Dec. 1, the company said in a statement. He replaces Kishore Jayaraman, who will move to a new role in 2012, GE said, without giving any details.

Rio Tinto blames carbon tax for 515 job losses

Rio Tinto has become the latest multinational to blame a factory closure on new carbon taxes, after it announced that it was shutting an aluminium smelter near Newcastle upon Tyne with the loss of 515 jobs.

In a fresh blow for the hard-hit north-east England, Rio is shutting its operation at Lynemouth on the Northumberland coast, which has been an important source of employment for 40 years.

Orbital solar power plants could meet Earth's energy needs

The sun's abundant energy, if harvested in space, could provide a cost-effective way to meet global power needs in as little as 30 years with seed money from governments, according to a study by an international scientific group.

Orbiting power plants capable of collecting solar energy and beaming it to Earth appear "technically feasible" within a decade or two based on technologies now in the laboratory, a study group of the Paris-headquartered International Academy of Astronautics said.

Solar power stations soon to float on Bangalore lakes

 Soon, you may see solar power being generated by power generating units floating on the city’s lakes and water bodies. And this will be the first time that such a project will be undertaken in India.

An initiative was kick-started on Tuesday through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Bangalore-based energy and environment consultancy, Enzen Global Solutions (EGS) Pvt Ltd, and France-based Ciel et Terre (C&T).

Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation to boost trade

No point in Kyoto pact extension without US, says Britain

While supporting the extension of Kyoto Protocol, Britain says it won't be good for the European Union (EU) to sign up for a second commitment to the only legally binding agreement on emission cuts if the US and other major economies do not follow suit.

Britain's Minister of State for Climate Change Gregory Barker, on a visit here, told IANS that his country, and the 27-nation EU, are ready for a global agreement on climate change, but other countries seem less enthusiastic.

Energy dept plans to set up biogas plants

The department of New and Renewable Energy is planning to set up biogas plants on its premises.

Inviting applications in this regard, the department stated that the state government would provide 40% subsidy on total costs of installation of these plants.

Additional deputy commissioner V S Hooda said gaushallas, milk dairies and other such units where cow or buffalo dung is available in adequate quantities can apply to the ADC office for permission to set up biogas plants. Other details can also be downloaded from, Hooda said.

The U.N.-backed carbon offset market needs an overhaul as it lacks transparency and is vulnerable to bribery and collusion that threaten efforts to help developing nations cut their growing carbon emissions, researchers in Britain said.

Borrowing costs pinch renewable energy industry

Rising interest costs and execution are the biggest challenges in the development of a viable renewable energy sector in India, panellists said at the India Economic Summit of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Mumbai on Monday.

Russia Intransigent on Kyoto Protocol Extension

Russia's chief climate negotiator said the country will "never" sign up to extend the Kyoto Protocol for a second implementation period, casting further doubt on chances of a deal at the international climate conference in South Africa at the end of this month.
