Carbon Trading May Be Ready for Its Next Act

Gone are the days when carbon trade was seen as a vital policy tool to cut emissions at the cheapest cost, and not many people talk about its prospects for overtaking the oil market in terms of traded value anymore.

The International Energy Agency (IEA), the global energy advisory body, has warned big energy consuming nations like India and China that energy will become "viciously more expensive" and polluting if governments don't promote renewable and nuclear power in the next two decades instead of burning coal.

India, Maldives seek 2nd commitment period of Kyoto Protocol

Ahead of the UN Conference on Climate Change in Durban, India and Maldives on Saturday pressed for a second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, the only international pact aimed at fighting global warming. In a joint statement issued here, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed agreed that the developed countries should take forward a second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol beyond 2012 at the forthcoming UNFCCC Conference of Parties in Durban, South Africa at the end of this month.

Juwi plans 50 Mw solar capacity

 German renewable energy solutions provider, Juwi Group, which forayed into the Indian market by floating its subsidiary in Bangalore last year, is looking at executing photo voltaic (PV)-based solar power projects with an installed capacity of 50 Mw in the country by the end of the next financial year.

In the last one year, the over 1.2-billion euro company had executed three PV-based solar projects in Rajasthan and Gujarat, together with an installed capacity of 20 Mw.

GMR plans greater solar energy play

 GMR Energy, the subsidiary of Bangalore-based GMR Infrastructure, is looking to increase its presence in the solar energy sector in the next few years. It plans to increase its installed capacity to 200 Mw from the present 25 Mw, a top company executive said.

 With rising fuel costs, high interest rates and congested roads resulting in a historic drop in the number of petrol and diesel car purchases this Diwali, voices in favour of electric and hybrid cars are getting louder.

Irradiance assessment key to success of solar power unit

India has taken a blind jump into the solar-power sector, with developers putting up projects without knowing how much of sun will shine on the panels. Perhaps okay for starters, but this should change, for there are established techniques available to measure and estimate irradiance.

India Solar Projects Face Financing Crunch as Banks Near Limits

Government-sponsored banks that funded India’s nascent solar industry when commercial lenders were wary may begin curbing financing, according to an official from a U.S. agency that finances developing country projects.

The Overseas Private Investment Corp., based in Washington, is close to its limit for lending to projects in India, Peter Ballinger, OPIC’s director of business development, said in an interview in Hyderabad. India, Switzerland ink deal for energy efficiency

 India and Switzerland have signed an agreement to cooperate in the development of energy-efficient buildings through the use of advanced Swiss technologies.

Philippe Welti, Swiss ambassador to India and joint secretary in the power ministry Devinder Singh recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for cooperation in the real estate sector, according to a statement by the Swiss embassy here Thursday.

India Doubles Solar-Power Installation Target as Industry Booms

 India expects to have 10 gigawatts of solar power capacity by 2017, more than double what it initially targeted, as the industry ramps up quicker than predicted.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy plans to award permits for as much as 10,000 megawatts of grid-connected solar plants by 2017, up from its initial target of 4,000 megawatts, Bharat Bhargava, a director at the ministry, said at conference in the southern city of Hyderabad. Ex-Im Bank finances $103 million in Indian solar projects to close FY 2011

 The Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank) recently announced that it awarded $103.2 million in loans for two more photovoltaic projects being developed in India using PV modules from U.S.-based companies. In all, the bank financed $176.4 million in Indian PV projects in fiscal year (FY) 2011, which ended Sept. 30.

Flats in city to set up waste treatment units

Kochi is aiming to become the first city in the country to have waste processing units installed in all its apartment complexes.

India Says Third of Solar Power Projects May Miss January Deadline

A third of solar power projects awarded by India in its first national auction may miss their January deadline for completion, an official at a state-run lender that’s helping to fund the program said today.

US-India to set up R&D centre

 India plans to have two gigawatts (GW) of solar power generation capacity by March 2013, a top official said Wednesday.

The ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) has drawn up plans to increase the capacity to 400 megawatts (MW) by the March 31, 2012 end of current financial year.

 India's environment ministry on Wednesday gave conditional clearance to a $31 billion hillside township being developed by Hindustan Construction Co, bringing a long-running dispute between the firm and authorities closer to conclusion.
