A book written by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi ''Convenient Action - Gujarat''s Response To Challenges of Climate Change'' was released here today by former President A P J Abdul Kalam and TERI director-general R K Pachauri.

Why the solar industry is booming while the wind business faces tough year

These days there’s not a lot of industries that can report booming growth year after year (the one-company juggernaut that is Apple excepted). But it’s blue skies for the photovoltaic industry, according to a new  report showing that solar installations in the United States are expected to have grown 62 percent in 2010 from the previous year.

NTPC arm to buy 620 MW from 37 solar power providers

State-run National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Monday said its fully owned subsidiary NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVN) has approved the proposal for entering into power purchase agreements (PPAs) with 37 solar power developers (SPD).

"The board in its meeting held on Dec 17, 2010, approved the proposal for entering into PPAs with 37 SPDs for a cumulative capacity of 620 MW," said the company in a statement.

According to the power major, 30 SPDs were cleared for 150 MW PPAs, while seven got cleared for 470 MW PPAs under phase I of the Jawaharlal Nehru... Read more..

India's NHPC Plans 20 Hydropower Projects, $5.6 Billion Investment in Myanmar

India's NHPC Limited (BSE:533098) (New Delhi), the government-owned hydropower generator, is planning 20 hydropower projects with an aggregate generating capacity of 12,466 megawatts (MW) to be constructed in the country between 2012 and 2017. These projects will be in addition to the $5.6 billion that NHPC will spend on building two hydroelectric projects in Myanmar during the period.

Hype versus reality on Indian climate change

The Cancun global warming and wealth redistribution summit concluded last week, with little to show for two weeks of talking in 5-star hotels and restaurants, other than vague promises that countries will try to do something meaningful about the "threat" of "dangerous" climate change.

Dyeing units in IMT Faridabad to set up treatment plants

The Haryana government has given approval to dyeing units of Faridabad emitting excessive pollution to set up their plants in the IMT on the condition that they install treatment plants to prevent pollution emission in their units and also to nearby areas.

Solairedirect to raise Rs 300 cr debt for solar projects in India

Solairedirect, France’s second largest solar power company, plans to raise around Rs 300 crore in rupee denominated loans over the next six months to fund its project target of roughly 25 mega watt (mw) of solar power projects in India in the financial year 2011-12.

Solar energy major Moser Baer has planned investment of USD 500-600 million over the next three to four years for expanding its manufacturing capacity of crystalline cells and crystalline silicon modules in India, said a senior company official.

IFC plans USD 10m to support promoting energy saving products

 The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is examining partnering the Self-Employed Women''s Association of India (SEWA) project with USD 10 million aimed at boosting energy efficiency products and reduction in carbon emission in a sustainable business model.

The multilateral financing body will take up the USD 22 million project proposal for approval in early January 2011 for distribution of upto two lakh units of energy efficient cooking stoves and solar lanterns.

NTPC seeks hydel project revival

Armed with a report by the Ganga River Basin Authority study, India's biggest generation utility NTPC, has sought a review of the government's decision to shut down its Loharinag Pala hydel project in Uttarakhand — for which the state-run firm had already spent Rs 700 crore and made financial commitments worth crores of rupees — even as it is talking to Qatar for independently importing gas.

Smart Grid Software, Data Mgmt Market To Hit $2.9 Billion in 2015

Elephanta gets solar power

Residents of the Elephanta Island can finally bid farewell to darkness and diesel generators. On Monday, 30 homes of Rajbander village on the island that hosts the heritage Elephanta Caves, will be lit up with solar lamps. The island, which is a 90-munite ferry ride away from the Gateway of India, does not have electricity as it is not connected to an electric grid.

REDD alert for India's forest dwellers

The agreement over Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) — a global regime to protect forests —  likely at the climate summit in Cancun may create livelihood issues for Indian tribals and forest-dwellers, experts have warned. India, China agree to continue cooperation on climate change

India and China Thursday agreed to continue their consultations on climate change negotiations and strengthen bilateral cooperation in green technologies.

ADB to Offer Guarantees for $425 Million of Solar Power Projects in India

The Asian Development Bank plans to back $425 million worth of investments in India’s solar power plants to help the projects secure financing.

The Manila-based lender plans to guarantee 50 percent of loans that international and Indian banks make to solar projects that have less than 30 megawatts of capacity in the country, Sujata Gupta, head of the bank’s private sector group in India, told reporters today in Mumbai.
