Navi Mumbai airport to get clearance by Wednesday

The Navi Mumbai airport is all set to get environment clearance with a ministry panel having expressed satisfaction over revised proposal submitted by City Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). The airport, has been a bone of contention between environment minister Jairam Ramesh and civil
aviation minister Praful Patel with the latter accusing the former of getting the project delayed.

An agreement for setting up Joint Clean Energy Research and Development Centre was signed between Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India and U.S. Department of Energy during the US President’s visit to New Delhi. They will carry forward discussions on operationalzing the mandate of Bali Action Plan which has been carried out under the Adhoc Working Group on Long Term Cooperative Action (AWG-LGA) of the UNFCCC.

Cashless bus travel project nears launch

Pune is set to be the first city in the country to experiment with a common mobility card to enable commuters to travel cashless in city buses. The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) is making arrangements for an early launch, but whether the date will be November 14 as announced earlier, will be decided on Wednesday.

The PMPML, in association with the Unit Trust of India (UTI) Bank, is rolling out the plan and a UTI team had recently visited Pune to see how things could be worked out.

India, U.S. to cooperate on clean energy, shale gas

India and the United States have agreed to cooperate on energy projects, including shale gas and clean energy, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and U.S. President Barack Obama told a press conference on Monday.

The two countries will set up a research and development centre for clean energy in India and will provide annual funding of $5 million each for five years, with matching investment from the private sector, they said in a joint statement.

UN calls for emission, transport taxes

A top UN panel has called for increased taxes on carbon emissions and air and sea transport to raise $100 billion a year for poor nations to combat climate change.

The group led by the prime ministers of Norway and Ethiopia also proposed a tax on international financial transactions for a UN fund aiming to be ready by 2020.

‘‘A tree a day will keep global warming away,’’ Barack Obama told the students of Holy Name High School , Colaba after viewing two of their projects on environmental issues. The projects were the first piece of business for the Obamas in Mumbai on Sunday.

Garbage dumping is a major problem in Gurgaon and the residents of Westend Heights in DLF phase 5 have taken it upon themselves to tide over the mess. The residents have been actively involved in segregated waste and converting them into compost.

The compost is used in gardens and lawns all over the condominium. The residents have installed an organic composting machine to convert the kitchen and organic waste into compost.

A senior Chinese legislator on Saturday said China is drafting a law to act to combat climate change, a move that signals the country's proactive role in honoring its commitment to curtailing emissions, among other measures, in tackling climate change.

Annual $100 bn funding for climate change possible

A UN advisory group headed by leaders of Norway and Ethiopia said Friday that it would be possible to raise as much as $100 billion a year to fight climate change by 2020.

Energy to Drive GE’s $10 Billion India Goal, CEO Says

General Electric Co., whose equipment generates about one-third of the world’s power, expects energy and health care to drive revenue in India to a $10 billion goal in five years, Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Immelt said.

Rich nations urged to develop climate aid plan for Cancún

Governments in the industrialised world must have a clear climate aid plan for developing countries if they want to avoid a fiasco at the Cancún climate conference this month, Brazil's environment minister, Izabella Teixeira, has warned.

UN advisory group on climate change submits report

Three weeks ahead of the Cancun Climate Change Conference, a high-level UN advisory group has presented a report with suggestions to come up with $100 billion a year by 2020, including tax on international flights, for poor countries to combat global warming.

The 21-member advisory group is co-chaired by Prime Ministers Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia and Jens Stoltenberg of Norway. The group was set up in February and includes Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia, philanthropist George Soros and British academic Nicholas Stern.

Cities are the world’s biggest source of carbon emissions and must embrace technology to clean the air and counter global warming, Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang said.

Survey planned to plug water leakage in Bangalore

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has joined forces with the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to address the problem of acute water shortage in the city. 

Having failed to plug the wastage of water, the agencies have now decided to conduct a door-to-door survey in order to identify the source of the problem.

The survey will focus on the problems of water supply, sewerage and solid waste management. It is slated to begin in January. 2011.

A high-level U.N. panel on Friday outlined potential sources, including levies on international flights, to raise up to $100 billion a year in new money for poorer countries to cope with climate change and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

ADB may step up funding for clean development projects

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) expects to step up its clean development mechanism (CDM) financing to Indian projects in areas such as renewable energy and solid waste management.

CDM financing is part of ADB's carbon market initiative and the bank helps its clients with the CDM registration process and buys upfront a portion of carbon credits likely to be generated by the projects over a period of time.
