Study shows two species emerged from one due to climate change

How do changes in climate affect species and biodiversity? A study by scholars from Bangalore-based National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) and National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) has shown that climate change infact caused the emergence of two species from one in the case of some small birds in the mountains of western ghats.

A genetic study conducted by V V Robin, Anindya Sinha and Uma Ramakrishnan from NIAS and NCBS examined how a species of bird found only in the western ghats, the white-bellied shortwing, gave rise to two species of birds.

Climate change: Plant migrates to safer place

A plant which was originally found in warmer regions of Uttar Pradesh has gradually migrated to higher elevations of 1,300 m in Himalaya regions in the last fifty years, indicating the impact of climate change, scientists have said.

"It appears that S. Anthemifolia is responding to the changing climatic conditions and showing an uphill movement pattern. Studies on its habitat requirements and dispersal mechanisms therefore become important," researchers have said as they kept track on its migrating pattern.

Rich must make clearer climate cuts: U.N

Rich nations must spell out their plans for cutting greenhouse gases more clearly to enable U.N. talks in Mexico to agree the cornerstone of a pact to slow global warming, the U.N.'s climate chief said.
Christiana Figueres said the annual November 29-December 10 meeting in Mexico would fall short of a U.N. treaty to combat climate change, saying countries learnt there was no "magic bullet" for a quick new U.N. accord at a Copenhagen summit last year.

She urged rich nations to clarify promises to cut greenhouse gases, many of which have not been written into domestic laws, and... Read more..

Time to find a second Earth: WWF

Carbon pollution and over-use of Earth's natural resources have become so critical that, on current trends, we will need a second planet to meet our needs by 2030, WWF said on Wednesday.

In 2007, Earth's 6.8 billion humans were living 50 percent beyond the planet's threshold of sustainability, according to its report, issued ahead of a UN biodiversity conference.

"Even with modest UN projections for population growth, consumption and climate change, by 2030 humanity will need the capacity of two Earths to absorb CO2 waste and keep up with natural resource consumption," it... Read more..

Green in focus in $2.3 trillion India plan

India will spend $2.3 trillion to boost its energy sector by 2030 by improving energy efficiency and using clean technology to help Asia's third largest economy balance growth and environmental aims.

While India will need to keep burning cheaper fossil fuel to expand the reach of electricity to half of its one-billion-plus population without power, relying on conventional energy alone would be unsustainable as reserves deplete and costs rise.

And being the world's third-worst carbon emitter only makes it imperative to shift to a greener economy, B.K. Chaturvedi, a member of... Read more..

The figures, released by the Bank in mid-September, show it lent 3.4 billion dollars to coal projects, or one quarter of all its energy lending.
