Energy conservation code a must from January

The state government has decided to make the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) mandatory for all commercial buildings that will come up after January 2013 to ensure maximum energy saving. If a commercial building with more than 100 kilowatts power capacity is planned, it should also make provision for energy saving in the areas of insulation, lighting, water heating, pumping, recycling of water and rain water harvesting. Without fulfilling these ECB guidelines, the building will not be given statutory permissions by the municipal administration department.

Fund May Use $100 Billion a Year to Encourage Carbon Price

The Green Climate Fund, designed to channel as much as $100 billion a year in pledges to emerging nations, may try to wean recipients off fossil fuel and encourage them to put a price on carbon, according to an overseer.

The fund may guarantee bank loans in developing nations for projects ranging from wind farms to building insulation and less-polluting agricultural equipment, Naoko Ishii, chief executive officer of the Global Environment Facility in Washington, said yesterday in an interview in Doha. India has acquired a key role in technology transfer for combating climate change after the country took a lead role in an agreement for a mechanism on transferring of expertise to developing countries.

Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) an autonomous organization under the Department of Science & Technology has been selected as one of the nine institutions comprising the Climate Technology Centre and Network, which forms the core of the technology mechanism.

Organic farming can create 8 mn jobs in Rajasthan: Assocham

Organic farming has the potential to generate over eight million jobs in Rajasthan in over the next five years if it is actively promoted, industry body Assocham said in a report today.

The study said promotion of organic farming in the state can generate over 6.5 million jobs apart from additional about 1.5 million jobs in on-farm storing, processing, value addition, packaging and marking facilities are included.

Government mulls new energy conservation code

As part of efforts to increase energy efficiency measures, the state government has proposed to introduce an Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) for buildings that consume more than 100 kilo watts of electricity in a time bound manner. The ECB Code mandates all commercial buildings to strictly comply with the energy conservation measures to ensure substantial energy savings in urban areas in the entire state.

BHEL seeks levy on imported solar power equipment

State-run BHELBSE 2.12 % is pitching for duties on imported solar equipment to safeguard the domestic manufacturing industry that is being hurt by cheap imports primarily from China.

BHEL's move comes close on the heels of the government slapping higher levy on imported power equipment, a development that would provide succour to domestic sector already grappling with sluggish business prospects.

Uttarakhand to levy tax on water for hydel projects

Even as the hydropower sector takes a beating in Uttarakhand, the state government has decided to impose water tax of 25 paise per cubic meter on hydel projects in the state, a move likely to push power tariffs in northward.

“This move is not going to do anything good for the power sector which is in doldrums in our state, especially when new projects are being delayed due to various factors causing huge burden on the companies. The move will also push the power tariffs upward further in the state,” said a top official of a hydropower company.

Bihar's total potential for renewable energy was 1205 MW in 2011

The total potential for renewable power generation in Bihar as on March 31, 2011, was estimated to be 1,205 MW including 619 MW biomass power. Bihar accounts for a meagre 1.34 % of total renewable power distribution in the country.

Gujarat has the highest percentage of nearly 14%, says the recent energy statistics-2012 of the National Statistical Organisation (NSO) of the ministry of statistics and programme implementation, government of India.

India’s Tamil Nadu to Auction 1 Gigawatt Solar Projects

India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu plans to auction 1 gigawatt of solar power capacity next month, the state electricity utility said.

Developers may submit bids for projects of 1 megawatt or more by Jan. 4, according to a tender document from the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corp. It didn’t place a cap on the number or size of projects it would award to any one developer.

Greater Noida to get hi-tech waste plant

The Greater Noida Authority has unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art municipal solid waste (MSW) management system for the city. Under this unique system, which is being set up with modern imported equipment, not only will Greater Noida be cleared of garbage heaped at public places, but fuel derived from recycled bio-degradable components would be used to power industries. Similarly, compost generated from the waste materials in the plant would be sold at cheap rates for agricultural purposes.

Haryana to purchase power from Bhutan

Haryana government has decided to purchase around 2000 MW of hydel power from Bhutan and a decision in this regard has been taken at the administrative level. For this the state chief minister would also be visiting Bhutan from December 14 to 16. During his visit the state chief minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda would also be signing an agreement with the Bhutan government for the purchase of around 2000 MW of hydel power.

Set up biogas plant, pay no garbage cess

In a bid to encourage people to treat bio-waste, the Mysore City Corporation has decided to waive garbage cess for hospitals, hotels and homes that have a biogas plant, announced MCC commissioner M R Ravi on Wednesday.

Around 60 pc of waste in the city is bio-waste, so if a biogas plant is built then the demand for dumping space can be reduced, reasoned the commissioner. MCC also plans to turn plastic waste into energy.

Tamil Nadu floats tender for solar power projects

State power utility Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd (Tangedco) Wednesday came out with a tender for award of solar power projects of 1 MW and above, totalling 1,000 MW.

According to the tender, the award of the project would be decided on competitive bidding.

The cash strapped Tangedco guarantees payment for the power purchased through an unconditional, revolving and irrevocable letter of credit from a nationalised or scheduled commercial bank.

India Proposes 9 Gigawatts Solar Capacity to 2017

India released a draft policy with the goal of building 9,000 megawatts of grid-connected solar plants by 2017, more than eight times its current capacity.

Plans include auctioning 1,650 megawatts of photovoltaic capacity by the central government in the next financial year, grants to cut project costs and loosening curbs on the purchase of equipment from overseas, according to the draft published on the website of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

Rooftop solar units under Anert's scrutiny

As part of setting up 10,000 rooftop solar power units across the state, the Agency for Non-Conventional Energy and Rural Technology (ANERT) is scouting for experts to inspect the quality of the power units being set up.

By 2017, the cost of generating solar power in India could be as low as the cost of buying conventional electricity if the National Solar Mission sticks to its target.

A draft policy document on the second phase of Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, prepared by the ministry of new and renewable energy, hopes that the country will achieve grid parity five years ahead of the original target of 2022.
