India Inc pitches for tax breaks on CSR spend

Corporate India on Tuesday sought tax breaks on their spending towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), as the Government is looking to make CSR spend mandatory through the Companies Bill.

The industry believes that providing tax breaks will incentivise CSR. Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs (Independent Charge), said he will take up the issue of tax breaks on CSR spends with the Finance Minister.

Centre to step in to support wind power firms

The central government is looking at stepping in to support the wind power producers who has been waiting for long to recover bills from some of the power distribution companies, said Farooq Abdullah, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy.

The Union minister also said said that the centre would support the energy producers from the National Clean Energy Fund to overcome the financial issues faced due to the non payment of discoms.

Border villages to be illuminated with solar power

The central government has approved the project to illuminate backward villages on the Indo-Nepal border with solar energy under the border area development scheme.

The service would be free for the villagers and the responsibility of looking after the solar street lights would be entrusted to the villagers themselves.

A large part of the district comes under the Sohelwa forest division which is spread across 452 square kilometers and includes several gram panchayats of Gaisdi, Pachpedwa, Haraiyya and Tulsipur development blocks.

First Solar, SunPower look to cash in on China's solar boom

U.S. solar companies First Solar Inc and SunPower Corp on Monday unveiled plans to expand in China, which is expected to be among the top solar markets in the world next year.

First Solar, the biggest U.S. solar panel maker, agreed to supply 2 megawatts (MW) of its thin-film solar modules to a solar project in Xinjiang province in western China, in the first quarter of 2013.

This will be the company's first commercial demonstration project in China, First Solar said.

The state governments plan to generate 350 MW from solar rooftop installations will require the recruitment of least 15,000 skilled hands with training in renewable energy technologies. Tamil Nadus solar policy,announced on October 20,makes it mandatory for all colleges,residential schools,government buildings and commercial establishments with a built-up area of 20,000sqm or more to buy 3%,the electricity they consume from solar power sources till December 2013 and 6%from January 2014.

Plea for faster adoption of clean coal technologies

Clean coal technologists from Canada and India met here Tuesday to discuss strategies for reducing carbon emissions during power generation.

The conference was kicked off by B. Prasada Rao, chairman and managing director, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) who called for accelerating the adoption of newer clean coal technologies from labs to commercial stage.

Delhi hospitals phase out mercury

The process of phasing out mercury-based equipment in Delhi hospitals is complete, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has said. These equipment have been replaced with “good quality, non-mercury ones.”

“Fresh installation of such equipment has already been stopped. All healthcare facilities (HCFs) dispose of mercury waste only through the two agencies specified by us,” a DPCC official told HT.

The phase-out move is to ensure that spilled mercury does not get mixed with bio-medical or other solid waste generated from healthcare facilities.

Proposed power plants may reduce water availability in Wardha, Wainganga rivers

Over 55,000 MW thermal power plants, planned in the drought prone Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, could drastically reduce the future water availability of Wardha and Wainganga Rivers, a Greenpeace report has revealed.

Greenpeace, which specially commissioned IIT-Delhi for the report, said that the additional demand imposed by plants in Vidarbha could reduce the water availability for irrigation and other uses in the region by 40 per cent in Wardha and 17 per cent in Wainganga river.

Wardha is one of the biggest rivers, while Wainganga is a smaller river in the region.

Govt proposes new norms for funding solar projects

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has come out with proposed norms for viability gap funding (VGF) for large-sized solar power projects that would come up in Phase II of the National Solar Mission.

VGF will be made available for certain specified capacity solar projects — say, 750 MW or 1,000 MW — according to the draft policy document on National Solar Mission, Phase II, released today.

The tariff at which such projects will sell solar power to electricity distribution companies will be “pre-fixed, at say, Rs 5-6 per unit”, the document says.

Scrap dealers for e-waste management?

With the Central government making it mandatory to segregate electronic waste (e-waste), Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is formulating a proper plan for its segregation and collection. For this, the civic body is also mulling roping in scrap dealers of the city.

Presently, the city generates more than 3,500 metric tonnes of waste daily. Though there is no estimate on the quantity of e-waste generated in the city, every household has around 8-10 kg of potential e-waste. This figure is an estimate by Society for Environment Protection (SEP).

'Driven by China and India, global Co2 to reach record high'

Driven by China and India and seemingly unaffected by an economic slowdown, global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions will reach a record high in 2012, according to new figures made public on Sunday.
 
Emissions from the burning of fossil fuels - mainly the use of coal to generate electricity - will rise to a record 35.6 billion tonnes, a 58% rise above 1990 levels, said a study released by the Global Carbon Project, a partnership of scientists established in 2001 to create a knowledge base about global warming.

Haryana fails to meet renewable energy target

The ambitious target set by Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency (HAREDA) to harness power from non–conventional sources, by 2012, indeed has proven to be an ambitious one.

The State Renewable Energy Policy, mentions Haryana government’s aim of achieving 10 per cent of the total capacity addition of 5,000 Mw of conventional power to be generated through renewable energy power projects by 2012.

Solar lamps for dark bridge

Solar lamps would soon show the path to motorists after dusk on Gandhi Setu, enveloped in darkness at night since it became a free zone on August 10.

Not one of the 100-odd streetlights glows on the 5.575-km-long bridge that connects the state capital with north Bihar.

To cut down power cost, Metro to tap solar energy

Soon, even a power grid failure would not be able to disrupt metro rail services with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) going to tap power from the sun to generate electricity. Apart from tapping solar power, the DMRC will regenerate power achieved through renewable sources of energy with the introduction of advanced regenerative braking technology.

ICT can cut global greenhouse gas emissions by 16.5%: study

Increased use of information and communication technology ( ICT) such as video conferencing and smart building management could cut global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 16.5% by 2020, amounting to $1.9 trillion in gross energy and fuel savings.

SMARTer2020, a new study unveiled today, shows that concerted action by policy-makers to encourage the use of ICT can save 9.1 gigatonnes carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO2e) of harmful greenhouse gases from being emitted.

State govt to assess environment impact assessment reports of mines

The state government will conduct independent assessments of all environment impact assessment (EIA) reports of all working mines in Goa.

In a letter to the Supreme Court's central empowered committee (CEC) written by the chief secretary B Vijayan, the government has stated that it has decided to go for an independent assessment of all EIA's of mining leases in the state.

The aim is to see that reports address shortcomings, accommodate public concerns and ensure the conservation of ecology and environment.

Loans for solar power projects set to get cheaper

The World Bank has agreed to make available a $200 million (Rs 1,100 crore) line-of-credit to IIFCL (India Infrastructure Finance Company Ltd) for lending to solar power projects in India. This will pave the way for cheaper loans for solar projects.

Confirming this to Business Line, the Chairman and Managing Director of IIFCL, S. K. Goel, said that after the World Bank’s acceptance of the proposal, “we are proceeding with the general terms and conditions.”

Hydro power sector not seen recovering soon: Voith

India’s moribund hydro power sector isn’t expected to change trajectory in the next two years, said Hubert Lienhard, president and global chief executive officer of Voith GmbH, which makes electro-mechanical equipment, reflecting the state of the sector and prospects for revival.

Cochin International Airport is set to become the first airport in the country to use solar power for running its utility grid system.

A Kolkata-based solar module manufacturing company, Vikram Solar, would be installing a 100 kWp solar power facility at the airport situated at Nedumbassery in Cochin.
