Israel to cooperate with Rajasthan in water management

After having partnered with Rajasthan government in the agriculture sector, Israel is looking forward to help the state in the field of water management and tourism. ”Israel is having discussions with the Rajasthan government on expanding partnership in areas of water management, post harvesting and tourism,” Israel embassy spokesperson, Ohad Horsandi told PTI here. Israel that has similar climatic conditions as Rajasthan, will replicate its own success model of harnessing water resources, in the state.

Over 750 Killed in Heat Wave; Telangana, Andhra Pradesh Worst Hit

The searing heat wave in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana has killed over 750 people so far, with more deaths being reported as vast swathes of the country reeled under the unrelenting summer heat.

There was no respite in sight with the India Meteorological department warning that severe heat wave conditions are expected to continue in the two worst-hit southern states.

In Delhi, the maximum temperature was recorded at 43.5 degree Celsius, a degree less than Saturday while Palam recorded 46 degree Celsius.

Japanese wireless tech promise for electric vehicles

Researchers at University of Tokyo claim to have developed a technology for wireless transfer of electricity which they believe will help develop more advanced electric vehicles.

The team has incorporated the technology in the “world’s first in-wheel motor system for electric vehicles” that transmits power wirelessly to run motors attached with each wheel.

The new system transmits electricity from an onboard power source to a coil attached to the wheel hubs without wires.

Delayed LED scheme to start from June 1 in Delhi

Delhi that was supposed to implement the ambitious LED bulb scheme from April 1 will finally roll out the same from June 1. The city government, which had earlier committed to partially fund the project, later decided against it, leading to the delay.

PM Narendra Modi had launched the nationwide project in January this year. Delhi was touted to be the first Indian capital to implement the energy conservation scheme with the residents buying LED bulbs at heavily subsidized rates.

NGT orders land grant to DJB for sewage plants

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Monday told the Delhi government’s Revenue department to transfer land to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) for setting up of sewage treatment plants in different areas. It has also asked the Delhi Police to aid the DJB in acquiring the land.

Civic bodies also faced flak from the NGT after they failed to show a single drain cleaned by them, in compliance with a previous order on May 8.

Scientifically-managed dump yards in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: As part of the `Clean Hyderabad' drive, four scientifically-managed dump yards will be set up in different corners of the city soon. The four new dump yards will be located at a distance of about 50 km from the city.

Currently, the city generates about 4,000 metric tonnes of garbage every day and is served by one large dump yard at Jawaharnagar. Spread over 300 acres, the Jawaharnagar dump yard has almost reached the saturation point.

In an ambitious plan to tap solar energy, the Delhi division of the Northern Railway is all set to use trains to generate solar power by the year-end. For the purpose, the railway authorities will roll out first train with solar panels fixed on its roof by the end of this year. Online system for green nod in 12 states by next month: MoEF

NEW DELHI: Around 12 states are expected to launch online platform for green clearances by next month to ensure transparency and faster approval of projects, a top Environment Ministry official said.

Currently, there is an online system, launched in June-July last year, for giving environment, forest and coastal regulation zones (CRZ) clearances for category 'A' projects related to industry, thermal power, infrastructure, river valley and mining across the country.

Poop-powered bus breaks world speed record

The UK’s poop-powered bus has set a speed record for a regular service bus with a top speed of 76.8 miles per hour (123.5kph). The vehicle is called the ‘Bus Hound’ (a tongue-in-cheek homage to supersonic Bloodhound SSC) and it’s powered by biomethane derived from cow manure. Operated by Reading Buses, the Bus Hound is decorated with a black and white skin reminiscent of the Friesian cows used for milk production around Britain, and it’s said to sound like a Vulcan bomber.

Ionic liquids used to recycle cotton-poly textiles

GEELONG – Researchers in Australia have used ionic liquids to successfully separate polyester–cotton blended textiles, with polyester recovery rates claimed to be in the region of 99.5 per cent. Subsequently, work is now also underway to use this technology to spin new regenerated cotton fibres that are competitive with both viscose and lyocell.

Compulsory purchase of renewable energy got a major boost last week from a Supreme Court order, even though it is likely to increase the power cost for a host of industries dependent on captive power generation and direct purchase of power for their manufacturing units.
