NITI Aayog mulls setting up National Energy Commission, to be based on a similar body in China

The government is considering a proposal to set up a National Energy Commission, on the lines of a similar body in China, to coordinate among half a dozen ministries for implementing an upcoming overarching energy policy.

The NITI Aayog proposal is currently pending with the Prime Minister's Office.

India meets more than three fourths of its energy requirements through imports. The imports, worth around $150 billion annually, is expected to double by 2030 unless a planned strategy to reduce demand for fossil fuel is put in place at the earliest. The NITI Aayog, which replaced... Read more..

S&P warn climate change will hit corporate credit profiles

Lead credit rating agency Standard & Poors says projected climate impacts will likely hit the creditworthiness of companies and countries this century.

The energy and consumer products sectors are most exposed to future shocks, analysts say in a report focusing on the impact of natural disasters on businesses.

The effect of disasters on corporate credit quality could “increase considerably” if predictions by climate scientists are proved correct, says the report.

“If such extreme events were to occur, companies’ existing insurance and overall disaster risk... Read more..

20 power plants asked to comply with green norms

The government on Tuesday said its central pollution watchdog — Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) — has not conducted any specific assessment of pollution caused by thermal power plants around their sites, but has so far asked 20 of them to comply with environment standards.

"Directions under Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 have been issued to 14 power plants, while concerned state pollution control boards were asked to direct six power plants to comply with the environmental standards under Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution Act), 1981 and Water (Prevention and... Business eyes place at Paris climate summit top table

Leading businesses and cities are set to have a greater say in how a global climate change pact will work than ever before.

For years mayors and chief executives have been kept away from the heart of UN talks, officials nervous of further complicating negotiations involving nearly 200 countries.

But the organisers of this year’s Paris climate summit, where an historic UN deal to limit greenhouse gas emissions is due to be signed off in December, are opening the doors to non-state parties.

The French government says its Agenda of Solutions package will be the fourth... Read more..

NTPC to raise $1 billion via rupee, green bonds

State-owned NTPC Ltd plans to raise $500 million each from its first global rupee and green bonds that it plans to sell soon.

The $1 billion bond sale, approved by the board of India’s largest power producer, ties in with the government’s aim of raising low-cost, long-term funds to help finance its renewable energy objectives.

The Reserve Bank of India in April allowed companies to sell rupee-denominated bonds overseas, a move that it said would help Indian borrowers raise debt abroad without taking on currency risks.

“The preparations are under way,” said a senior... Read more..

Could green bonds offer a home for capital fleeing fossil fuels?

After the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, it was “German Unity” bonds that met a multi-billion Deutschmark need for investment in East Germany.

Japan used bonds to finance – for better or worse – a fleet of nuclear power plants in the 1960s and 1970s.

Today, says Sean Kidney, governments face a comparable challenge: “We need to see a green infrastructure revolution.”

The Climate Bonds Initiative chief argues policymakers can mobilise finance through the bond markets without splashing taxpayers’ cash.

In 2014 banks and corporations issued US$36.6 billion of bonds... Read more..

Govt begins giving out daily air quality bulletin for 11 cities

Exactly a month after launching the national Air Quality Index (AQI), which had its share of teething problems, the Union environment minister Prakash Javadekar on Wednesday announced the release of a daily air quality bulletin for 11 cities, including Delhi, based on prominent pollutants.

He also said the Centre would launch its "fresh air as birthright" awareness campaign from 20 cities across the country in June.

"The index, showing air quality in these cities, is based on a quite comprehensive and robust system of data collection at different monitoring stations. It shows... Read more..

The next frontier in connected energy: Syncing IoT, demand response

I have been immersed increasingly in the Internet of Things discussion and trying to understand how the trend relates to smart grids and demand response. Because demand response requires information connectivity to adjust electricity usage, it appears, on the surface at least, as though there is a natural convergence.

But appearances can be deceiving.

Here's where the literature comes in. Even those who have never read George Orwell’s dystopian classic "Animal Farm" likely have heard at least one sentence from the book: "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal... Read more..

IEA Report: Clean Energy Spending Needs to Triple to Stabilize CO2 Emissions

The world needs to triple its investments in clean energy research, suggests a new study by the Paris-based International Energy Agency, if we’re to have a chance of keeping the world below 2 degrees Celsius of warming above pre-industrial levels -- a level beyond which truly dangerous climate change might set in.

That’s because in addition to any international agreement to cut carbon emissions that may be reached at the end of this year, the world will also need new technologies to fill the gap left behind as we use less of fossil fuels like coal.

Sustainability meets Louis Vuitton

Luxury and sustainability are not two words that often go together. Outside of wallet-draining eco-lodges in the Maldives, the green movement is often mocked as a bunch of hair-shirted hippies living without electricity.

But this concept is alien to Diana Verde Nieto, founder and chief executive of Positive Luxury, whose aim is to create a "globally recognized seal of approval for luxury brands." Since the organization started in 2011, it has accredited the sustainability efforts of 200 brands from across the worlds of beauty, fashion, jewelry, travel and hospitality, and fine food... ExtraCarbon aims to create resources out of waste management

Given the size of our country and its population, waste management is a major issue in India. Currently, the country’s garbage generation stands at about 0.2 to 0.6 kgs of garbage per head, per day. While, Swacch Bharat Abhiyan is working towards garbage disposal, and NexusNovus is opening up the idea of waste management in the country, the solutions are far too few and fragmented.

Entering this fray in the recent years is ExtraCarbon. The present scenario of inadequate waste management, poorly controlled open dumps, and defragmented and unorganised industry practices prompted... Read more..

This New App Turns Reducing Your Carbon Footprint Into A Game

Maybe you've checked your carbon footprint once or twice. But what next? The scale of the climate challenge—and potential solutions—can seem overwhelming to the point that many people don't take action at all. A new app called Oroeco is designed to make things a little easier by turning climate actions into a game.

After more than a decade of working on climate projects on an organizational scale, with companies like Nike and agencies at the UN, Ian Monroe, the app's founder, realized that individual action was key to progress quickly enough to avert disaster.

Barely 16 miles from central Delhi, a 40-year-old coal-fired power plant run by NTPC Ltd stands testament to the bargain struck by India’s capital city: The world’s dirtiest air for electricity.

The state-owned utility is now seeking to cut emissions across its facilities in India, starting with its oldest—the one in Delhi. NTPC plans to spend Rs.1,200 crore annually on technology upgrades, a company official said, asking not to identified as the person isn’t authorized to speak on the subject.

Can India lead on green buildings, clean energy and corporate sustainability?

With a population rapidly approaching that of China crammed into just one third of the area, India suffers from resource scarcity on a level unlike any other nation. So while it nominally faces many of the same challenges as other BRIC nations – water scarcity, dirty energy supplies, human rights issues – India’s population density makes its situation exponentially more difficult.

A World Bank study in 2014 found that environmental degradation like air pollution, water pollution, deforestation and natural disasters cost India $80bn per year, or nearly 6% of its economic activity. Of... Read more..
