PE firms develop their own wind energy assets

In an attempt to maximize returns on exits, private equity (PE) investors are steadily developing their own platform of wind power assets in India.

Nitin Gadkari’s innovative plans bring new energy to the roads sector

Union minister Nitin Gadkari revealed some interesting ideas during his interaction with this newspaper, apart from welcome determination to get things done. The most important among his ideas is speeding up highway construction with oodles of extra-budgetary resources, and using renewable fuel in city transport to bring down pollution levels. Wind industry’s pitch to India Inc: 18% IRR

Wind turbine manufacturers in India want to create a new market by enticing large companies to start wind power businesses. Their pitch to them: 18 per cent IRR.
 
A recent White Paper produced by the rating agency, CRISIL, supports the wind industry’s claim that wind farms can give up to 18 per cent internal rate of return (which is a measure of the profitability of an investment, arrived at by bringing all the future cash flows from the project to their today’s value and comparing the total value with the investment.)

Biogas plants show way in waste management

Here is a lesson the Corporation of Chennai can learn from its own experiments with garbage management-small is efficient. The civic body had proposed several projects in the past for scientific closure of dumping yards in Kodungaiyur and Perungudi, but nothing has materialised so far. Meanwhile, small biogas generators set up in places like Koyambedu and Pulianthope are showing the way for efficient waste management. Neighbourhoods like Otteri, Velangadu, Vanagaram, MRC Nagar, Anna Nagar and Harrington Road are also likely to get biogas plants in the next few months.

​Ajmer railway station to run on solar energy

Ajmer, which is gearing-up to become a smart city, courtesy a joint Indo-US initiative, is also set to get Rajasthan its first railway station to run on solar energy. Ajmer division of North Western Railway has decided to meet the power demand from solar energy. A feasibility report of this project said that fixing solar cells will cost 1.16 crores to produce estimated 40 kilowatt power every year.

Inter-ministerial talks on climate change begin

With regard to the Paris climate conference, the environment ministry has started its inter-ministerial consultation, which would be on five essential pillars — climate finance, mitigation, adaptation, equity and innovation. The agenda will form the bedrock for the nationally determined contributions (INDCs), which India is likely to submit to the United States by June before the next round of climate change negotiations in Bonn, Germany.

Environmental loss in Sundarbans worth Rs 1290 cr: World Bank

Environmental damage in the climate change-hit islands of Sundarbans is costing India Rs 1,290 crore each year, estimates a latest World Bank report.
 
The cost of environmental damage associated with ecosystem degradation and biodiversity loss is about Rs 6.7 billion (Rs 670 crore) annually, while the cost of health effects due to poor environment is estimated at Rs 6.2 billion (Rs 620 crore), it says.
 
The total figure of Rs 1,290 crore is about ten per cent of Sundarbans GDP in 2009.

Climate change to drastically reduce wheat crop

In the coming decades, at least one-quarter of the world's wheat production will be lost to extreme weather from climate change if no adaptive measures are taken, says a new collaborative study done by Indian American professor Vara Prasad. Wheat yields are projected to fall by six percent for each degree Celsius the temperature rises if no measures to adapt to extreme weather fluctuations are taken.
 
Based on the 2012-2013 wheat harvest of 701 million tons worldwide, the resulting temperature increase would result in 42 million tons less produced wheat.

Citigroup to set aside $100 bln to fund green initiatives

Citigroup said it would set aside $100 billion to fund environmental projects over the next decade, doubling the amount it had earmarked for such projects in 2007. Citigroup said it would fund projects related to renewable energy, greenhouse gas reductions and sustainable transportation.

Govt to ask Delhi to prepare master plan to check pollution

Many recent studies have earned Delhi the tag of being one of the most polluted cities in the world. A recent survey conducted by Greenpeace had found that the deadly PM2.5 levels in the national capital was 10 times higher than the safety limit prescribed by the World Health Organisation.

ACME Group to invest Rs 600 crore in Punjab solar projects

Renewable energy player ACME Group on Thursday said it will invest Rs 600 crore to develop 74 MW of solar PV power projects in Punjab.
 
Delhi-based ACME is one of several companies that have won mandates to install solar power projects in the state.
 
According to the bid document floated by the Punjab government, ACME will be signing two power purchase agreements—one for 24 MW at 7.16/ kWh and the other for 50 MW at 7.06/ kWh.

Decentralised renewables set for 70% annual growth in India, says Goldman Sachs

The market for decentralised renewable energy in India could be worth more than US$150 million by 2018, while around 5 million residential solar systems are predicted to be sold in the country between last year and 2018, according to a new report.

Garbage figures rake up some dirt

 If one goes by the data with Nagpur Municipal Corporation's health department, the city has recorded a steep drop in generating garbage. The NMC collected 3.49 lakh tonne solid waste in 2014 as against 3.63 lakh tonne collected in 2013, the health department said in reply to a query under the RTI Act by Abhay Kolarkar. According to statistics provided by NMC, the per day lifting of garbage was 994 tonne in 2013 and in 2014 it has come down to 958 tonne per day.

Farmers on the outskirts of the city will get treated water for growing vegetables within two months, if everything goes according to plan. For, the much-awaited sewage treatment plant (STP), set up by the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation at Gabbur, is finally ready to start functioning.

The “commitments” made by a couple of hundred renewable energy companies for setting up 266,000 MW of solar and wind power projects over the next five years has created a wave of derisive sniggers in the industry.

Railways looks at ways to cut power bill

Railways is moving to buy electricity from state utilities and central generation companies through open tender as well as through inter-state trading with the aim of paring its power bill by nearly a third, top government sources said.

Punjab signed MoUs worth Rs 13,500 crore for investment in solar projects with American, British and Italian companies, besides setting up of five bio-ethanol refineries in Punjab, at the first Renewable Energy Global Investors Meet and Expo in Delhi on Monday. Biogas from Koyambedu market to fuel households

The wholesale market complex in Koyambedu which supplies fresh produce for the city will soon supply fuel to cook the produce.
 
The biomethanation plant, which has been generating electricity from vegetable waste, will now also use waste from slaughterhouses, hotels, treated sewage sludge and banana stems to supply biogas to neighbouring houses.

The auditors of wind turbine maker Suzlon have expressed concern over the company's financial health as faces liquidity issues and is yet to make payments to its lenders and vendors.
