Journalists should not forget climate change, say experts

It’s been a difficult few months for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, one of the foremost bodies charged with evaluating the risk climate change.

Since the unearthing of an embarrassing error in the most recent IPCC report – the statement that the Himalayan glaciers might be gone by 2035 – the hunt for further IPCC blunders has been on, drawing in scientists, bloggers and journalists from all over the world.

Yet some experts argue that, the occasional scandal aside, climate change is a subject that receives relatively little media attention. Three years ago,... Read more..

Did Jairam Ramesh Mislead Nation on Emission Intensity Cuts?

In the run up to Copenhagen climate conference last year, government had announced that it will reduce its emission intensity by 20-25% by the year 2020 from 2005 levels. Now an advocacy group claims that the so called "cuts" do not require any new action or policy change. What's more, data made public by Ministry of Environment itself two months prior to the announcement establishes this beyond any doubt, they claim.

Manu Sharma, founder of Climate Revolution Initiative, an advocacy group working in the area of climate change, alleged in a statement released today that Jairam... Read more..

EU, U.S. clean energy support under threat: HSBC

Governments last year agreed a global stimulus to kick-start the global economy, including about $500 billion for clean energy and infrastructure, but rhetoric had shifted toward austerity ahead of this week's G20 summit. Renewable energy incentives were under threat especially in key demand markets, the United States and the European Union, despite long-term support for carbon curbs and energy security -- rhetoric given new impetus by the BP Gulf oil spill. "Regulatory risk is on the rise again and regulatory uncertainty has led to very poor wind and solar share price performance year to... Read more..

Asian Rivers Impacted by Clmate Change

It all depends on where you are. When weather patterns change rainfall will increase some places and decrease in other places. What has the most impact is those river systems that many people depend on. Two of Asia's major rivers are the the Brahmaputra and Indus river basins that descend from the Himalayas into India. According to some recent study these two are likely to be severely affected by climate change while others will be less affected and could even benefit.

Energy security: Challenges & opportunities for India

India is currently the world's fifth largest oil importer, meeting 75% of its needs from overseas. According to the international energy agency, India is poised to become the third largest importer after the US and China by 2025 and while India accounts for 5% of the world's energy consumption the known hydrocarbons in the country are only 0.5% of the global reserves. So it is clear India will always be a net importer unless someone makes a miraculous discovery.

Environment worries to lift electric car sales: report

Global sales of electric cars are expected to reach 940,000 units this year compared with 732,000 units last year, with the number jumping to 3 million in 2015, J.D. Power analysts said in a report. The uptake of battery powered cars is seen as key to fighting climate change by cutting carbon emissions, as well as a way to wean economies off imported or difficult to reach oil, as highlighted by BP's Gulf of Mexico oil spill. More than 98 percent of sales are expected to be of hybrid electric cars, which are part petrol, part battery, rather than plug-in cars, which are wholly battery... Read more..

How CEOs can win in a carbon-regulated world

The recent mandate that all vehicles in 13 Indian cities comply with Euro-IV emission norms impacts all auto companies in the country — and businesses in many other sectors. As countries like the US, China and India step up efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, companies will increasingly have to prepare for a carbon-constrained future. Some companies might stand on the sidelines and wait for policy to take shape, but most CEOs would be better off getting ahead of legislation. They can see it as an opportunity to better serve their companies by asking, ‘How can I use carbon... Read more..

Climate intervention schemes could be undone by geopolitics

And yet a number of senior and significant voices in the scientific academy and policy community continue to speak of the urgency with which solar radiation management research should be pursued. They offer these putative control technologies as another option in the portfolio of climate management strategies, with climate manipulation joining climate change mitigation and climate adaptation in a trinity of strategies available for policymakers. At the very least, it is argued, solar radiation management should be available as a backstop technology if the world finds itself in a climate... Read more..

PSUs may sell 50% of hydel power locally

The government is considering allowing state-owned power companies such as NHPC and Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVNL) to sell up to 50% electricity generated from their hydel power plants to respective home states where the projects are located. Local allocation could go up to 100% in exceptional circumstances with the approval of the minister of power, a government official said.

The move aims at providing level playing field to government companies so that they are able to compete with private hydel project developers who bag several hydel projects from state governments offering... Read more..

Green India Mission may exceed estimate

India’s mammoth afforestation scheme, the Green India Mission, may have more greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction potential than previously estimated, according to a yet-to-be published study in Current Science.

The mission could offset about 10.5% of projected national GHG emissions compared with the ministry of environment and forests’ earlier estimate of 6.4%, according to Greening India Mission: A critical review by the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The study has been submitted for review.

If the new estimates are true, it will make easier India’s task of... Read more..

Critics slam new climate change proposal in Bonn

A new round of climate talks ended Friday with rich and poor countries both sharply criticizing a new text meant to pave the way toward a deal to halt global warming. Still, the United Nations said progress was made at the two-week meeting in Bonn. "This all in all is a big step forward making much more possible in Cancun," said U.N. climate chief Yvo de Boer, referring to the next major climate summit in Mexico at the end of the year.

Greener Future

Buildings commercial, industrial and residential account for about 40 per cent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. Governments everywhere are exploring ways to tackle this. The task involves incorporating energy-efficient measures in various aspects of construction. To ensure India doesn't lag behind, the prime minister's council on climate change cleared the Urban Habitat Mission under the National Action Plan on Climate Change. This will make it mandatory for new office buildings to conform to energy-saving codes in three years' time. Since only 700 buildings have so far implemented... Read more..

Major climate decisions brewing in obscure ozone treaty talks

Governments moved closer Friday to curbing the use of chemicals commonly used as coolants in refrigerators, air conditioners, hair spray and other household items in what some say would be among their biggest climate decisions ever.

The obscure round of U.N. ozone treaty talks in Geneva, which few people are following, laid the groundwork this week for a possible decision in Uganda in November to halt the promotion of hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, which are manmade chemicals not found naturally in the environment, and are considered greenhouse gases.

Trees shift their range as climate warms

The world’s warming climate is forcing trees and the plant life around them into new territories where the environment is more like the areas where they normally thrive, scientists report from a new global survey. Some forests and groups of vegetation have begun moving upward to higher elevations, or northward to higher latitudes to meet the climate change, while others in areas that are drying are shifting southward toward greater sources of moisture, the researchers say.

Ocean Currents may Cause Rise in Greenhouse Gases

An increase in carbon dioxide in Earth's atmosphere has been linked to changes in the circulation and biological activity of the oceanic waters surrounding Antarctica. French scientist Jerome Chappellaz has studied the interconnecting air spaces of old snow-or firn air inside the polar ice caps of Greenland and Antarctica.
