I will head India's climate talks at intl fora: Ramesh -"I will be India's chief negotiator for talks related to climate change. There is no big deal in it," Ramesh told reporters here when asked if Saran's replacement was on the cards. Justifying his move, he said that it is always the minister who represents his ministry at an international forum and hence "it is no big deal if I head my team at the negotiating forums on climate change." 'Green' cement made from rice may help tackle global warmingResearchers claim that producing cement dust accounts for about 5 percent of global emissions. Cement powder, a form of which was used by the Romans, is most commonly created in the form of Portland cement - named for its similarities to the local stone in Dorset. It is made by heating limestone with clay at high temperatures, a process that produces about a tonne of carbon dioxide for every tonne of cement made. A specialist concrete unit at Dundee University aims to reduce carbon emissions in developing countries such as India and China. Researchers from the... Read more.. Date : Apr 13 Source: New Kerala

Wind industry growing in blue and red states alikeAs Paul Krugman's New York Times Magazine cover story on environmental economics, "Building the Green Economy," was ricocheting around the enviro blogosphere last week, the American Wind Energy Association released its annual report [PDF] on the state of the wind industry. It was an interesting juxtaposition -- Krugman's deep dive into the macroeconomics of an aggressive cap-and-trade or carbon-tax policy to limit greenhouse-gas emissions alongside a report from the frontlines where the green economy is actually under construction. What's striking is that the wind farm–... Read more.. Date : Apr 13 Source: Grist

'Slim' prospects for climate deal this yearProspects of finalising a new binding agreement on climate change by the end of the year are "slim", according to UN climate convention chief Yvo de Boer. He was speaking at the first UN climate talks since the Copenhagen summit. A negotiating process was agreed, but big divisions remain between nations. The EU vowed to step up efforts to achieve a legally binding treaty. Analyses show pledges in Copenhagen are not likely to keep the global average temperature rise below 2C (3.6F). "We see that with current pledges, we wouldn't reach that objective - this is why... Read more.. Date : Apr 12 Source: BBC Science/Nature

Closing in on a Carbon-Based Solar CellTo make large sheets of carbon available for light collection, Indiana University Bloomington chemists have devised an unusual solution -- attach what amounts to a 3-D bramble patch to each side of the carbon sheet. Using that method, the scientists say they were able to dissolve sheets containing as many as 168 carbon atoms, a first. "Our interest stems from wanting to find an alternative, readily available material that can efficiently absorb sunlight," said chemist Liang-shi Li, who led the research. "At the moment the most common materials for absorbing light in solar cells are... Read more.. Date : Apr 10 Source: Science Daily
