Tokyo launches Asia's first carbon emissions trade

The city of Tokyo on Thursday launched Asia's first scheme to trade carbon credits, aiming to lead Japan in the battle against greenhouse gas emissions blamed for climate change.

The mega-city of 13 million mandated that the 1,400 top-polluting factories and office buildings reduce emissions, with the aim of slashing Tokyo's total output of carbon dioxide by 25 percent from 2000 levels by 2020.

"We want to be a model for the Japanese government," Yuki Arata, the director for emissions trading at the Tokyo metropolitan government's environment bureau, told AFP.

Carbon emissions lead to dangerous changes in oceans

The rise in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is driving fundamental and dangerous changes in the chemistry and ecosystems of the world’s oceans, warn international marine scientists.

More than 30 percent of the CO2 released from burning fossil fuels, cement production, deforestation and other human activities goes straight into the oceans, turning them gradually more acidic.

“Ocean conditions are already more extreme than those experienced by marine organisms and ecosystems for millions of years,” the researchers said. “This emphasises the urgent need to adopt policies that... Read more..

Heat over carbon tax

The Minister of State for Environment and Forests, Mr Jairam Ramesh, has done well to counter the threat from the US and Europe to impose a carbon tax on Indian exports by retaliating that New Delhi would take such measures to the dispute settlement system of the WTO. What the hints dropped by Washington and Brussels on the imposition of such a tax reveal is that some of the leading players in the climate debate are bent on pressuring major developing economies such as India, China and Brazil to curb environmental pollution, even if such action affects their economic growth adversely.... Nissan will sell electric car for close to $25,000

Nissan’s new electric car will cost just over $25,000 when it goes on sale in the U.S. in December, aiming to bring gasoline-free technology within reach of mainstream drivers.

The Leaf, a four-door hatchback, will have a base price of $32,780, but it’s eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles. That will make it cheaper to buy than electric vehicles coming from rivals and may force competitors to cut prices. But the Leaf’s limited range of just 100 miles per charge for its lithium-ion battery could be a dealbreaker for some motorists.

Building a business case for sustainability - Express India
