Renewable energy strong despite recessionA devastating recession slowed but did not stop the clean energy industry's growth in 2009, a report issued Tuesday found. Helped in part by government stimulus funding, the world spent $63.5 billion on wind farms and turbines last year, up 23.5 percent from 2008. The global biofuel market rose 29 percent, hitting $44.9 billion, according to the annual Clean Energy Trends report from the Clean Edge Inc. research firm. Only solar companies saw their revenue decline in 2009, and that was due to a plunge in the price of solar panels. Worldwide revenue for photovoltaic companies... Read more.. Energy Efficiency: Achieving the Potential, Realizing the SavingsFor the next few decades, energy efficiency is one of the lowest cost options for reducing US carbon emissions. Many studies have concluded that energy efficiency can save both energy and money. For example, a recent McKinsey report calculated the potential savings assuming a 7% discount rate, no price on carbon and using only "net present value positive" investments. It found the potential to reduce consumer demand by about 23% by 2020 and reduce GHG emissions by 1.1 gigatons each year -- at a net savings of US$ 680 billion. Likewise, the National Academies found in 2009 that... Read more.. Date : Mar 17 Source: Huffingtonpost.com

Centralised solar power plant-Inappropriate for IndiaThe proposed centralised plants for the first phase of the 1000 MW of solar projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) has been discounted as an inappropriate model for India and will not meet the very purpose for which the National Solar Mission (JNNSM) had been launched, a senior energy expert said. Though he termed the JNNSM for setting up 20,000 MW of solar power in the country as a ''proactive and forward looking'' initiative of the government, the expert was highly critical of the mode of implementing the project through the same centralised generation... India's smoggy capital tries a whiff of fresh airNew Delhi: India has switched on its first public air purifier in the heart of capital New Delhi as part of an experiment that backers say could help other smog-choked cities in emerging countries. The maker of the seven-ton machine, Italy's Systemlife, claims the box-like structure can purify 10,000 cubic metres of air every hour, scrubbing out pollutants such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide. The unit, plugged in Saturday on a traffic-clogged street of central Delhi, is a pilot that could lead to more being installed in other areas of the city, ranked the world's fourth... Read more.. Climate activists say businesses are buying their way out of costly greenhouse gas cutsBRUSSELS (AP) — Major European polluters are buying their way out of making big cuts to greenhouse gas emissions by purchasing carbon offsets that pay for environmental programs in developing nations, a nonprofit group said Friday. To avoid the high cost of becoming greener, power companies and steel makers are using offsets to meet emissions-reduction requirements, and thus undermining the EU's cap-and-trade program that would otherwise punish them financially for not cleaning up their operations, the group Sandbag said. Businesses and regulators should be "striving for the... Read more.. Date : Mar 12 Source: Los Angeles Times
