JNNURM approves project reports of Rs 95 crore for water network in Surat

In what could be considered as their last meeting before the present term of central government comes to an end Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewable mission (JNNURM) has approved detailed project reports (DPR) worth Rs 95 crore for setting up water networks in old and new city areas of Surat. 

Not only new DPR for water network was approved but also final portion of grant money allotted for BRTS network in the city amounting to Rs 58.62 crore was also paid up by JNNURM.

Investors who have shied away from cleantech companies for the past two years haven't lost interest, they're broadening their scope into more areas of sustainability, according to a report by Cleantech IQ.

Toshiba says to invest $500 mln in India businesses over 5 years

Toshiba Corp. plans to invest $500 million in India by 2017 and create 5,000 jobs, said Toshiba’s president and chief executive officer, Hisao Tanaka.

Tanaka, who is on his first visit to India, told reporters in New Delhi that the Japanese firm, which is present across energy, infrastructure and water businesses, is targeting sales of $3 billion from the country by 2017.

Madras HC cautions govts against 'privatizing' drinking water services

 Cautioning governments against privatizing fundamental sovereign responsibilities such as providing drinking water to people, Madras high court has wondered how a company, which dragged Bolivia into international arbitration over privatization of drinking water, was involved in new Tirupur area development scheme.

2013 record year for new carbon trading schemes

Nine new emissions trading schemes (ETS) were launched worldwide in 2013, and as many as five of them were set up in various cities and provinces in China, according to a recent report released by the International Carbon Action Partnership (ICAP).

This is the highest number of new schemes launched since the European Union began the world’s first carbon trading system in 2005.

PMC starts land-acquisition process

The civic administration has taken a step towards decentralising the city's garbage processing system, by starting the process to acquire land for five garbage processing units.

"These plants have been marked in the development plan. We have started the paperwork to acquire the land required," Rajendra Jagtap, additional commissioner of the PMC, told TOI.

14% increase in mileage of passenger vehicles is mandatory now

India has notified new norms for passenger vehicles that mandate an average increase of at least 14% in mileage from 2016-17 and 38% five years thereafter.

The standards, which will be implemented by the ministry of road transport and highways, will catapult India into the league of select nations including the United States, Germany, Japan and China that strictly enforce such norms with harsh penalties for violation.

Kingfisher halt helped cut aviation carbon emissions: Report

The total carbon emissions by Indian carriers went down in 2012 as compared to the previous year, said a carbon footprint report released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Thursday. The reversal was not an indicator of a new trend, but rather a result of Kingfisher Airlines' suspension of operations.

US Said to Press Action Against India in Solar-Energy Dispute

The U.S. filed a second complaint against India’s solar-energy policies at the World Trade Organization, reviving a year-old dispute between the two nations.

Fortum to invest Rs 1600 crore in green energy in India

After acquiring a five megawatt solar plant in Bhilwara, Finnish government-owned Fortum is looking to expand its operations in India both through investing in greenfield projects and acquisitions of existing facilities.
