Government to implement scheme to boost food output

The Department of Agriculture (DA) will be implementing before year-end a scheme developed in India to boost agricultural productivity.

Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) Director Nicomedes Eleazar said the nationwide program, “Adoption of the Bhoochetana Principles and Approach in Boosting Agricultural Productivity in the Philippines,” will be implemented even before the end of 2013.

Solar thermal in India: New standards for vacuum tube collectors, storage tanks

The increasing share of Vacuum Tube Collector (VTC) systems imported to India took the Indian government to specify the standard requirements for evacuated solar collector tubes for non-concentrating solar thermal collectors and related storage tanks.

The industry and the manufacturers welcomed the publication of the new standards, released for public debate in early March 2013, as the aim of the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is to keep low-quality systems out of the sector.

India to stop futures trade in metals, energy on Saturdays

India, the world's biggest buyer of bullion, will stop futures trading in precious, base metals and energy futures on Saturdays with immediate effect, in line with global practices, a move that could hurt already sagging volumes at the Multi Commodity Exchange.

However, trading in futures of agricultural commodities will continue on Saturdays for now and will be reviewed after three months, the Forward Markets Commission, which regulates commodity futures exchanges, said in a statement.

 The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the setting up of already appraised 12 new mega food park projects as per 11th Plan pattern of assistance i.e. capital grant at the rate of 50% of the eligible project cost in general areas and at the rate of 75% of eligible project cost in difficult and hilly areas i.e. northeast region including Sikkim, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and ITDP notified areas of the states, subject to a maximum of Rs 50 crore per project.

ADB invests $2 million in pay-as-you-go solar for India

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has revealed details of its US$2 million equity investment in Indian pay-as-you-go solar company Simpa Networks.

The ADB announced the deal in January and says the move is its first venture into small scale equity investment but may reap bigger dividends than its larger deals if the arrangement encourages private equity groups to follow suit.

A report on the project, released by the ADB, says Simpa will also benefit from the renewable energy expertise which the bank's representative will bring to Simpa's board.

22% growth in e-waste market in India: UK expert

With India’s expanding ele­c­tronic sector and IT indu­s­try, the country’s e-waste industry grows at an average rate of 22 per cent hig­her than the world average.

TN hospitals to pay more for disposal of waste

 The State government has revised the rates for the collection of biomedical waste from government and private hospitals from Rs. 26 to Rs. 39 per kg.

The increase has come after five years. This means that all hospitals will have to pay more for the disposal of their hazardous waste.

DMRC to tap solar power for its energy needs officials said Tuesday.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to execute renewable solar power projects in its premises.

Kalpakkam nuclear power plant units cannot function without green nod: PIL

 The Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) at Kalpakkam has been operating its two units for about three decades without environmental clearance and hence the units cannot be allowed to run unless they fulfil mandatory requirements, a PIL has said.

Tamil Nadu takes India's solar power capacity up 30%

India's installed solar power capacity is poised to jump 30% with the Tamil Nadu government close to signing power purchase agreements for 700 megawatts (MW) by the end of October.

Once the plants are up and running, Tamil Nadu will have the second largest solar power capacity in India after Gujarat, the pioneer in such projects in the country.

India has 1,759.43MW of grid-connected solar power, with close to 800MW coming from Gujarat. The projects are expected to be ready for commissioning next year.

Tamil Nadu is looking at ways to tap the treated wastewater for its irrigation system, said a climate change expert on Monday.

Germany is providing India financial assistance of 250 million euros (about US$333.77 million) and technical assistance for its green energy corridors.

India's solar sector is awaiting the official launch of the second phase of the country's Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission.

Environmentalists say that till the time upcoming buildings extensively use glass, they cannot be "green". "Glass throws back heat into the atmosphere causing warming. Structures with glass facades use air-conditioning round the clock, using up energy," said Debi Goenka from Conservation Action Trust.

 In a move to support the wind energy sector, Tamil Nadu government will take up power evacuation projects, at a total cost of Rs 5,998 crore.

The sector has been crying about the poor evacuation infrastructure in the state, which has resulted in diversion of investment to states like Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and others.

Punjab government is taking all necessary measures to implement biomedical waste management and handling system as 173 hospitals working under Punjab Health Systems Corporation have implemented it in the state, a government spokesman said on Sunday.

Schrader International Inc. will supply its tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) to Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Pvt. Ltd. for use on the firm's e2o, a four-passenger two-door hatchback that Mahindra may export to Europe starting next year.
