India’s Solar Power Targets Too High For Domestic Module Manufacturers, Claims Report

India’s solar power capacity addition targets are way beyond what the domestic solar module manufacturing base can support, a recent report has suggested.
 
The Indian government is set to transform the solar power sector as it plans to substantially increase the capacity addition targets. Under the National Solar Mission, India had initially planned to achieve an installed solar power capacity of 22 GW by 2022. 20,000 solar pumps to provide drinking water to remote parts of India

The drinking water and sanitation ministry has set a target of installing 20,000 solar power-based pumping systems in tribal and inaccessible hamlets/ habitation during this financial year to provide potable piped water to the locals.
 
In such areas, piped drinking water is almost impossible due to non-availability of electricity. As per the plan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha and Rajasthan would get 2,000 pumping systems each. 'India Rivers Week' to be observed

As most of the Indian rivers suffer pollution and reduced flow, a group of NGOs Wednesday announced observing "India Rivers Week" here to highlight the issues. A statement said the first ever "India Rivers Week, 2014" will be observed as a national event in New Delhi Nov 24-27."A recent appraisal has found that there is no river in any of the top 50 cities in the country, which is not sick or dying with river Yamuna in Delhi-Mathura-Agra and Ganga in Kanpur-Varanasi-Patna leading the list," the statement said.

IL&FS mulling $1 billion clean technologies fund for India

One of India's leading infrastructure and finance companies, IL&FS today said it is mulling a USD 1 billion fund to bring in clean technologies from Nordic nations to the country to support the new government's huge infrastructure building efforts.

India and Canada on Wednesday signed a statement of cooperation for research in water quality monitoring and alternative wastewater treatment technologies in river Ganga.

ADB to lend US$100 million for India solar projects

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is to lend US$100 million toward ACME Solar Energy’s India project plans.
According to project documents on ADB’s website the money will be used towards the development of 200MW of utility-scale PV. The projects are scheduled to be completed before 2016.
ACME Solar Energy is a subsidiary of ACME Power and is backed by French utility EDF’s EDF Energies Nouvelles and Luxembourg-based sustainable energy developer EREN, which each hold a 25% stake in the solar venture.

 The Mumbai University (MU) is all set to build a new library at its Vidyanagri campus in Kalina based on the concept of a ‘green’ building. According to the varsity officials, they are looking at setting up a modern library, which will be called – ‘Modern Knowledge Resource Centre’ to be able to fulfill the diverse needs of students. The library building which will come up on approximately 4500 square metre area will be varsity’s first green building.  Rural poverty in parts of Asia could be exacerbated due to negative impacts from climate change on rice production, and a general increase in food prices and the cost of living, says the report of working group two of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report.

Industry-backed report says EPA climate rule to cost $366B

A study commissioned by the coal industry and other business groups found that the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) carbon rule for power plants could cost at least $366 billion.
 
The analysis, written by Nera Economic Consulting, said that people in 43 states would see double-digit percentage increases in their electricity bills, with at least 20 percent increases in 14 states.
 
Meanwhile, the carbon dioxide reductions would only limit global warming by 0.02 degrees and sea level rises by 0.01 inch, researchers said.

Govt links hydel projects to Ganga clean-up, proposes new clearance rules

The NDA government plans to link hydro electric projects (HEPs) with its ambitious Ganga rejuvenation plan, for which it has proposed a new set of norms that all the project proponents will have to comply with before procuring environmental clearances.

Scientists reveal unprecedented sea level rise

Australian scientists have made an alarming discovery that sea levels have risen more in the past century than at any other comparable period in the past 6,000 years.

Tonnes of electronic waste being dismantled in Seelampur on a daily basis not only pollute the environment but also create a serious health risk for workers and other people in the vicinity, say green activists. Wind power is cheapest energy, EU analysis finds

Onshore wind is cheaper than coal, gas or nuclear energy when the costs of ‘external’ factors like air quality, human toxicity and climate change are taken into account, according to an EU analysis. The report says that for every megawatt hour (MW/h) of electricity generated, onshore wind costs roughly €105 (£83) per MW/h, compared to gas and coal which can cost up to around €164 and €233 per MW/h, respectively.
