India has ranked fourth among 55 developing countries in clean energy investment, as per a new study released by Inter-American Development Bank. India's neighbour China is ranked first. India scored of 1.85 points against China's 2.23.

The study called 'Climatescope 2014' suggests that renewable technologies are as cost-effective in developing countries as they are in the developed ones. Climate change a 'threat multiplier for farming-dependent nations: report

Climate change and food insecurity are "threat multipliers", and 32 countries dependent on farming face an "extreme risk" of conflict or civil unrest in the next 30 years, a global analytics firm said on Wednesday. Food shortages and rising prices have the potential to worsen political, ethnic, class and religious tensions, the risk advisory firm Maplecroft reported in its annual "Climate Change and Environmental Risk Atlas (CCERA)".

India invites Saudi Arabia to invest in strategic oil storages

Seeking to deepen energy ties with oil-rich Saudi Arabia, India has invited the world's largest oil exporter to invest in strategic crude oil storages and downstream facilities.

Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, leading a high level delegation on his maiden visit to Riyadh, met Saudi Oil Miniter Ali al-Niami on extending cooperation in oil and gas sectors.

Saudi Arabia is India's largest supplier of crude oil, providing over 20 per cent of its oil needs.

Kerala govt to procure e-waste menace by paying money per kg

Discarded electronic goods such as computers and TV sets are set to bring money for the Keralites, with the state government deciding to procure e-waste to tackle the urban pollution.

The state government has decided to procure the accumulation of hazardous electronic waste in institutions and homes from the next month with the help of the Clean Kerala Company Ltd (CKCL), a state-run agency under the Local Self Government Department.

Swiss firms to brighten prospects of India's solar energy sector

With the scope of solar energy increasing in the national energy mix, leading Swiss manufacturers are set to open up solar cell fabrication units in India.

A unit at a cost of $400 million is likely to come up in Gujarat next year to produce solar photovoltaic cell of 480 mw capacity, which may be followed by another plant in Kerala in 2016. Wind sector VC funding drops to $2.4 billion

Corporate funding activity in the wind sector globally dropped to $2.4 billion in the third quarter of 2014 from $4 billion in the second quarter of the year, according to a report by global clean energy communications and consulting firm Mercom Capital Group. 
 
Wind venture capital (VC) funding came in at $140 million in one deal, compared to $48 million in four deals in last quarter. The only VC deal this quarter was India-based ReNew Power Ventures' $140 million raise from Goldman Sachs Group, Asian Development Bank and GEF SACEF India.

Boom ahead: Boost for smart cities as govt relaxes FDI norms for realty, construction

In a boost to cash-starved real estate industry, the Narendra Modi government today relaxed rules for FDI in the construction sector by reducing minimum built-up area as well as capital requirement and easing the exit norms.
 
The proposal to amend the FDI policy in construction development sector was approved by the Union Cabinet.

Narendra Modi government pushes for walk the talk on solar energy

Ganga lock on polluting units

The Supreme Court today asked the National Green Tribunal to take steps to close down an estimated 763 industrial units discharging effluents into the Ganga if they had not complied with anti-pollution directives.

A bench headed by Justice T.S. Thakur asked the tribunal to examine whether the 17 categories of industries spread over 11 states had complied with the repeated directives of the apex court since 1992 to take anti-pollution measures and install effluent treatment plants.

AT&C loss levels in various discoms remain higher in FY13:ICRA

Despite steps taken by various state discoms to reduce distribution losses, average aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) loss levels have been higher at 27 per cent in FY13, a recent study by ICRA said. 

According to the rating agency, improvement has been observed in distribution loss levels for discoms in 12 states during FY07-13, while a deterioration or limited progress in reducing loss levels has been seen in five states and in the remaining two states, loss levels have remained almost unchanged.

Solar cheaper in India than imported Australian coal

The results of India’s latest solar auction are in, and it is bad news for developers of Australian coal projects – solar PV is cheaper for Indian users than the electricity price needed to pay for imports of coal from Australia.

India is about to witness a massive scaling up of solar power capacity to 100,000 Mw, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking the ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) to prepare an action plan by November first week.
