Animals flee forests in search of food & water

Senseless mining in hills and forests has resulted in wild animals entering human habitations in search of food and water. The drying up of water sources in the summer is also to be blamed for it. And animals are paying with their lives for it.

Forest officials of Keonjhar Sadar forest range found the mutilated body of a hyena on National Highway 6 near Badahal Sahi in Keonjhar town on Monday afternoon. Injury marks on the carcass implied the animal died in an accident while crossing the road.

Similarly, a wild deer sustained injuries when a group of stray dogs attacked the... Read more..

Huge plastic waste 'bomb' ticking

A huge plastic bag waste is taking a toll on lakes, ponds and drainage of the city. Every day, Indore generates around 40 tonnes of plastic out of which about 10 tonnes goes to integrated disposal plant. The rest is either picked up by rag pickers or left to lie around in the city.

Environmentalists say that plastic bags choke lakes, ponds, urban sewerage and hundreds of animals die every year after consuming it. Besides, it causes air pollution if burnt in open as can be seen anywhere at any given day. Even the Supreme Court on Monday observed while hearing a PIL that threat of... Read more..

As China dumps in India’s solar market, domestic industry shrivels

India’s National Solar Mission may be offering huge opportunities to global players but the domestic solar industry is bleeding owing to poor policy and stiff competition from foreign companies, especially the Chinese.

The National Solar Mission is a major initiative of the Indian government to promote ecologically sustainable growth while addressing the country’s energy security challenge. Launched in 2010, it sets a target of 1,100 MW during the phase I by 2013 and 20,000 MW of installed solar generation by 2022.

Wind Farms Cause Global Warming

Wind farms can cause climate change, say researchers.

Usually at night the air closer to the ground becomes colder when the sun goes down and the earth cools. But on huge wind farms the motion of the turbines mixes the air higher in the atmosphere that is warmer, pushing up the overall temperature. Satellite data over a large area in Texas, that is now covered by four of the world's largest wind farms, found that over a decade the local temperature went up by almost 1 degrees Centigrade as more turbines are built.

This could have long term effects on wildlife living in the... Read more..

UN Peacekeepers open new fronts in war on carbon

Using alternative energy, natural building materials, and water efficient technology has helped the UN tackle emissions from its sizeable peacekeeping operation, according to a major new report.

Almost 122,000 people are involved in 16 operations in war-torn countries, which the UN estimates contribute over half the organisation's 1.8 million tonne carbon footprint.

However, according to a two year study published earlier this week there is the potential to slash the environmental footprint of peace-keeping operations through the use of clean technologies that also serve to... Read more..

US Corporations Sponsor Carbon Scam in Europe

Major publicly traded U.S. corporations, including Dow Chemical, ConocoPhillips, Chevron and Cabot Corporation, have secured multi-million-dollar dubious carbon credits to compensate for their greenhouse gas emissions in Europe, as revealed in this investigative report.

The CDM was originally designed by the United Nations for industrialized countries to subsidize climate change mitigation in developing countries. But it ended up creating a perverse incentive to maximize profits for a few industrial gas manufacturers, mostly based in China and India, which obtained 19 of these... Read more..

Rule of dump: Discard e-waste the right way

The new rules on e-waste that have come into effect from May 1 can be seen as the first step towards reducing pollution of the information era. The E-Waste (Management and Handling) Rule, 2011 were notified on May 30, 2011 by the Union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF), which set May 1, 2012 as the date for implementation.

What makes the notification far-reaching with its ‘extended producer responsibility’ principle is that it puts the onus on companies which would now be responsible for the lifecycle of an electronic product - right from its design to disposal.
