New York's Largest On-Farm Biogas Power Project Generates Renewable Energy for Nearly 1,000 Homes

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) joined state and local officials today at the grand opening of New York state's largest on-farm, 'co-digestion' biogas power project, marking an important boost to the state's renewable energy production and sustainability efforts. The facility is located at Synergy Dairy, a 2,000-head dairy farm in Covington, Wyoming County, southwest of Rochester.

Energy-efficient devices save Rs 1.2 lakh crore?

Energy-efficient electrical appliances used in household and commercial establishments can save about 20,000 megawatt of power per year, resulting in savings of Rs 1.2 lakh crore in capital investment on new power plants besides transmission and distribution infrastructure.

At the same time, consequent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions can be to the tune of five crore tonnes annually by 2020, a cross-section of industry experts said on Tuesday at a conference organised by The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).

National Solar Mission completes 89% of allotted capacity

The National Solar Mission, which aims to install 20,000 MW capacity of solar energy by 2020, has commissioned 89% of its allotted capacity in its first stage, government officials said.

The government had signed power purchase agreements (PPA) with 28 solar power developers for 140-MW solar photo voltaic (PV) projects in January 2011, out of which 125-MW of capacity stands commissioned currently.

Bihar proposes to set up 25 hydel power projects

Heavily dependent on the Centre for supply of electricity and facing acute power shortage, Bihar has taken steps for setting up 25 hydel power projects for generating about 800 MW with the proposals at various stages of approval, official sources said.

Bihar State Hydel Power Coporation Limited Managing Director A K Pandey told PTI that the state had at present 54 MW capacity hydel power plant and work was on at various stages for construction of different hydel power projects with generation capacity of 33 MW.

If you want to shrink your carbon footprint when you check into a hotel, you may be better off staying at a mid-range or budget chain hotel.

That's the conclusion from a report released last week by Vermont-based Brighter Planet, the eco-minded tech firm that creates digital apps and other technology to measure environmental impacts. The report said the nation’s hotels use 4% of all commercial building energy per year and generate 34.7 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

Use of Agriculture Waste as Biofuel

The National Policy on Biofuels has been notified by the Government of India in December, 2009 for accelerated development and production of biofuels and for substituting for petrol and diesel for transport and other applications. Since technology for production of biofuel from agricultural wastes is in development stage, precise estimates have not been made regarding creation of employment in this sector.

This information was given by the Minister of New and Renewable Energy Dr. Farooq Abdullah in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.

Climate change could be in primary school curriculum by September

RAMBLE, Hanover — Minister of Education Reverend Ronald Thwaites has indicated that climate change could be included in the education curriculum at the primary level in the next school year, which begins in September.

World Bank Arm Considers Funding Sri Lanka Waste-to-Energy Plant

The World Bank’s private-sector financing arm is considering $9 million in debt and equity funding for a project in Sri Lanka that will sell electricity produced from burning municipal waste.

RenewGen Enviro Ventures India Pvt. won a 25-year contract to build and operate a 10-megawatt plant in Sri Lanka’s Western Province, according to a summary of the proposed funding on the International Finance Corp.’s website.
