India's policy decisions dampen investment climate: US envoy

Several recent policy decisions by India have caused "significant concern" and "dampened sentiment" about its investment climate, US Ambassador to India Nancy J Powell said today.

"The adoption of manufacturing policies discriminatory to foreign companies and the inclusion of retroactive tax provisions in the Finance Bill are two examples," Powell said, addressing members of the Indo American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) and American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) here.

Bayer building tops global sustainability ranking

A particularly environmentally friendly Bayer MaterialScience office building in India has received the top ranking in the international Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. The zero-energy building in Greater Noida outside of New Delhi was awarded Platinum in the category New Construction. 'Inexact' computer chip 15 times more efficient than current models unveiled

Computing experts including Indian origin researchers have created an "inexact" computer chip that challenges the industry's 50-year pursuit of accuracy.

The design improves power and resource efficiency by allowing for occasional errors.

Prototypes unveiled this week at the ACM International Conference on Computing Frontiers in Cagliari, Italy, are at least 15 times more efficient than present technology.

Coming soon, 'blue rating' water standards for industry

India is set to become the first country in the world to come up with "blue ratings" - on the lines of green ratings for eco-friendly ventures - for increasing management of water, fast turning a scarce resource, in industry.

The Union Ministry of Water Resources has asked the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to frame guidelines for increasing water efficiency in Indian industries. The CII is likely to come up with the water standards by March next year.

Suzlon Energy to Raise Up to $300 Million

Suzlon Energy Ltd. said Friday that it is in an advanced stage of raising up to $300 million to pay its overseas bond holders and that it sought up to 45 days more to meet the payment obligations due in June.

Kirti Vagadia, Suzlon’s chief financial officer, said that the Indian wind-turbine maker continues to work on plans to raise capital at its overseas subsidiary level, as well as its programs to monetize non-critical assets.

“With this package of measures we remain totally confident of meeting our obligations,” Mr. Vagadia said in a statement.

Mining Industry ‘to Spend $20bn on Renewable Energy and Conservation by 2020′

Himalayas warming faster, facing severe climate change impact: Study

A scientific study published on Wednesday revealed that the Himalayas, one of world's richest biodiversity zones, is warming faster than other parts of the globe.

The research, conducted by Boston-based University of Massachusetts and Bangalore-based Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and Environment (ATREE) points that the average mean temperature during a 25-year period (1982-2006) in the Himalayas has increased by 1.50 degree Celsius.

Several power plants to shut down on dearth of fuel, transmission facilities

As the mercury rises and the summer heat peaks, Indians may be in for sweaty days with long power cuts in some regions as several plants have been forced to shut down due to scarcity of fuel and transmission facilities and equipment failure.

Apple Inc to use only green power for main data center

Apple Inc plans to power its main US data center entirely with renewable energy by the end of this year, taking steps to address longstanding environmental concerns about the rapid expansion of high-consuming computer server farms.

The maker of the iPhone and iPad said on Thursday it was buying equipment from SunPower Corp and startup Bloom Energy to build two solar array installations in and around Maiden, North Carolina, near its core data center.

Several new power projects on the anvil

Power-starved Tamil Nadu is expected to get an additional 4,887 Mw of power from state and Central projects, as well as joint ventures before the end of 2013. 'Majority of global population to live in cities by 2050'

About two-thirds of the world's population will be located in urban areas by 2050, creating serious implications for the conservation of natural resources, according to the 2012 edition of the Nature's Living Planet Report.

Indowind energy seeks to raise funds to help pay off debt

Indowind Energy, which sells wind power in India to companies including Oracle and Citibank, seeks to raise $30 million to help pay off loans and bondholders.

The board has decided to try and raise the money through external commercial borrowings to meet a “gap in funding,” the company said today in a filing.

It needs $20 million “for clearing” long-term loans and payments on its foreign-currency convertible bond, it said. The remainder would go to building a 28-megawatt wind farm.

Welspun wins solar project in Madhya Pradesh

Welspun Group, the country's largest solar power developer, has won a 125 MW solar photovoltaic project in Madhya Pradesh, a top company official said today.

"We bid Rs 8.05 per unit to bag the 125 megawatts (MW) out of 200 MW that was auctioned by the Madhya Pradesh government," Welspun Energy Ltd Managing Director Vineet Mittal said here.

After the formal award of the project, Welspun Solar Madhya Pradesh Pvt Ltd will put up one solar photovoltaic project of 100 MW and another of 25 MW capacity.

Moser Baer Plans to Revamp Loans, Bonds Amid Solar Glut (Update 1)

Moser Baer India Ltd. (MBI), the nation’s biggest solar manufacturer, plans to restructure $738 million of loans and bonds as it jostles to survive a supply glut that has claimed at least 10 U.S., German and French panel makers.

The company expects to reach an agreement with banks to restructure 35 billion rupees ($649 million) of secured debt by August and may sell new five-year bonds to pay off dollar- convertible notes maturing in June, Chief Financial Officer Yogesh Mathur said in a phone interview from New Delhi.
