National Defence Academy to save 1,600 units of electricity

The National Defence Academy (NDA) will observe the Earth Hour by shutting down all non-essential electric lights on its 8,000-plus acre campus from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm on March 31 to save more than 1,600 units of electricity.

Earth Hour is an annual global event organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature and is held on the last Saturday of March. Under the initiative, people are urged to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for an hour at a designated time. The move is aimed at spreading awareness on the need for action to arrest climate change.

SUV that runs on biodiesel unveiled

A car that runs only on biodiesel extracted from microalgae cultivated in marine systems was unveiled by scientists.

Science and technology minister Vilasrao Deshmukh flagged off the test-run of a sports utility vehicle that runs entirely on the biofuel, which may be used as an alternative to diesel.

The biodiesel was prepared from mats of microalgae found growing naturally in the West Coast of India by Central Salt Marine and Chemical Research Institute (CSMCRI), Bhavnagar.

ICICI Bank to get $100-m credit line from ADB for energy projects

The Asian Development Bank will provide a $100-million credit line to ICICI Bank to fund renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.

The central bank's board approved the sanction on Wednesday.

The credit will be available to projects identified by the ADB and ICICI Bank. This is taking into consideration Indian Government objectives and overall impact assessment, according to ADB.

Wheat yields may fall by 6-18% by 2020 on climate change

The productivity of staple grain wheat could decline by upto 18% by 2020 due to adverse impact of climate change which is causing rise in temperature, Parliament was informed today.

The yield of another major food crop rice might also fall by up to 6 per cent by 2020, agriculture minister Sharad Pawar said in Rajya Sabha quoting from research conducted under Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)'s Network Project on Climate Change (NPCC).

There's a need to dispose e-waste responsibly in Pimpri-Chinchwad. The twin-cities along with Pune are the second highest generator of e-waste after Mumbai in Maharashtra, according to a study. It - Report on Assessment of Electronic Wastes in Mumbai-Pune Area - was jointly conducted by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). Biodiesel extracted from sea algae set to propel vehicles

Extract of the slimy green algae found in abundance across India's 7,517 km coastline is all set to fuel vehicles.

On Friday, the country will witness the first test run of vehicle running on B100 marine microalgal biodiesel in New Delhi. India suspends Posco steel plant environment licence

An Indian tribunal has suspended the environmental licence given to the South Korean company Posco for building a steel plant in the state of Orissa.

The National Green Tribunal also ordered a fresh review by the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

The plant has faced stiff opposition from local people campaigning to save farmland and woodland.

A government panel had been pushing for the licence to be scrapped, but it was conditionally approved in January 2011.

Going green, IIT-Bombay style

Till last year, Aditya Dogra never switched off lights in the hostel washroom simply because he didn’t know where they were located. He still doesn’t except that Dogra, a student at the IIT— Bombay (IITB), now knows the sensors will automatically turn off the lights when not in use.

“If there is no one in the washroom for 10 to 15 minutes, the lights go off,” said Dogra, a final year civil engineering student.

In an effort to conserve energy, the institute had last year, installed sensors in bathrooms and toilet blocks in all 14 hostels and academic departments.
