India Power Corp bets on wind farm, distribution for growth

The Jyoti Kumar Poddar controlled India Power Corporation (IPC) is looking at expansion of wind-power portfolio and distribution franchise for future growth.

The Rs 520 crore entities – controlling a portfolio of thermal power generation as well as distribution portfolio (through its joint venture entity DPSC Ltd) – currently has nearly 35 MW wind capacity to be expanded by 60 MW this month.

Waaree Completes Ground-Mounted Solar Power Project in Gujarat, India

An Indian solar PV module manufacturer and an EPC contractor, Waaree, has completed the designing, procurement, construction and commissioning of a 10 MW ground-mounted solar project in Gujarat, India.

The company has received the project from M/s Monosteel India. The project includes 40,000 units of multi-crystalline solar modules from Waaree that will help in converting sunlight into clean electricity. Lanco's Udupi Unit awarded Gold Shield by Power Ministry

Biogas plant fuels energy needs of Madurai college

In an effort to tap green energy, a college in the rural outskirts of the city has come up with a biogas plant in its campus that uses human and kitchen waste to produce cooking gas. In collaboration with the Sulabh International Social Service Organisation, Arul Anandar College at Karumathur near here successfully inaugurated the plant during the 42nd college day celebrations on Friday.

Indian airlines not submitting emission details to EU, says Ajit Singh

India's airlines are not submitting emission details to the European Union (EU) as it had directed, Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh told parliament.

"Though the European Union has directed Indian carriers to submit emission details of their aircraft by March 31, 2012, no Indian carrier is submitting them in view of the position of the government," the minister said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

"Hence the imposition of carbon tax does not arise," he added.

OPIC to Consider $250 Million Loan for India Renewable Projects

The U.S. Overseas Private Investment Corp. will meet next week to consider a $250 million loan to Infrastructure Development Finance Co. (IDFC), India’s second- largest lender to power plants and roads, to finance clean- energy projects.

OPIC’s board plans to meet on March 29 to make a decision on the loan, Timothy Harwood, spokesman for the Washington-based government investment agency, said in an e-mail to Bloomberg News.

UP's first solar power plant starts functioning

Amid growing emphasis on adopting alternative and environmental-friendly means to meet energy demands, the first solar power unit of Uttar Pradesh has started functioning on the outskirts of the city.

Climate change in Western Ghats to hit water supply

It’s bad news for all – from farmers to policymakers. Yields of tea, coffee and cardamom from high altitude plantations in the Western Ghats are falling because of the changing regional climate. New rules to meet summer power demand

With summer expected to be a testing time for power discoms in the city due to new northern grid regulations , Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) has framed new regulations for demand side management (DSM) to keep pace with the growing demand. Corporates may face stiff penalties for violating green norms

Corporates violating environmental norms may have to shell out a stiff penalty.

The existing penalty of Rs 1 lakh for violation of environmental norms by corporates was “pathetic”, the Environment and Forests Minister, Ms Jayanthi Natarajan, said at a convention on ‘Corporate Perspective on Sustainable Development: Rio+20 and Beyond' here.

“We are reviewing it (the maximum penalty imposed on the corporates)… I would like to really make it a very stiff penalty, but I would not quantify now,” Ms Natarajan told newspersons on the sidelines of the convention on Wednesday.

Clean energy fund swells to Rs 3,864 cr

Even as the government’s annual Economic Survey outlines the importance of climate change and global warming, the Union Budget 2012-13 made no announcement towards climate financing. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee made no specific announcement about how the Rs 3,864-crore National Clean Energy Fund is going to be utilised in 2012-13.

A2Z Group, which has with interests in clean technology, energy and infrastructure management, and Dataserv Group, an organization specializing in recycling of e-Waste, announced a joint-venture company in India, to be called 'Weensure' for disposal of IT assets in India.

Lack of awareness about plastic waste disposal hits industry

Even though plastic bags constitute a minuscule portion of total plastic consumption, environmental hazards caused by littering of the waste has brought the industry into negative light, a top government official said today.

"Plastics or synthetic polymers have earned a bad image in the last few years due to littering by consumers and lack of awareness among them about its disposal," Chemical Secretary K Jose Cyriac said at a workshop on plastic waste management organised by Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology here.

Finnish company Switch introduces MW-scale inverter

The Indian market for solar inverters seems to be having a magnetic effect on multinational inverter companies. Finnish company, The Switch, has just introduced its product in India – an utility-scale inverter meant for large solar farms.

A unique feature of the SunSwitch 1 MW single inverter, according to Mr C. Sundar, Key Account Manager – India, is that it requires no external cooling. It has an in-built cooling system and as such is suitable for “harsh ambient conditions”.

Mono Steel Completes 10-Megawatt Solar Plant in India’s Gujarat

Mono Steel (India) Ltd., a sponge iron-maker, completed a 10-megawatt solar power plant in India’s Gujarat state, according to the project contractor.

PTC India to retain only 5% stake in IEX

PTC India Ltd, one of the promoters of the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX), plans to sell part of its stake in the bourse, retaining a minority 5%, in line with regulations.

As part of the exit plan, Renuka Ramnath’s Multiples Alternate Asset Management (MAAM) will buy PTC’s 14.5% stake in IEX. SunEdision has put up a 100-kW solar plant on roof of building of Scope International in Chennai. Scope is Standard Chartered Bank's captive BPO and its headquarters is in Chennai.

Kudankulam nuclear plant gets Jaya go-ahead

With Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa giving the nod for the Kudankulam nuclear power plants, Russia said that it was going to send its scientists to the site on Tuesday to start commissioning work for the first unit of the reactors. India, Pakistan to hold talks on energy cooperation

India and Pakistan are set to hold talks in New Delhi from March 23 on cooperation in the energy sector, including trade of petroleum products and the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project.
