India to ask airlines to shun EU carbon scheme

India is poised to ask airlines not to take part in the European Union emissions trading scheme, a senior official said, in what would be an escalation of a row over the EU's unilateral move to charge for carbon emitted by flights in and out of Europe.

China in February barred its airlines from participating in the European scheme, which is meant to reduce emissions.

Solar Stills tech to be commercialised

Solar Stills, a low-tech way to distill sea water, powered by heat of sun with improvised water output efficiency, will soon be made available to industry for commercial utilisation, a top CSMCRI official said.

“Through innovation we have doubled water output of stills, which earlier used to be 3—4 litre a day. They shall be entering trial phase and soon be available for commercial production,” the Director of Central Salt Marine and Chemical Research Institute (CSMCRI), Dr Pushpito Ghosh, told PTI.

China Sunergy to double sales to India

China Sunergy, which produces solar modules, expects to double its sales in India in 2012, sources in the company have said.

The Chinese company made news in India last month by announcing that it was willing to bring in equity and debt funds to the aid of its customers in India. The company also said it would set up an office in India (Mumbai).

Records on e-waste to be open for public

In the year 2010, the CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) predicted that India’s annual e-waste production will increase to 800,000 tonnes by 2012. E-waste consists of electronic equipment which in the long run may prove to be hazardous to human health.

Most of the times, electrical equipment are discarded in dustbins.

Solar-powered school fined for faulty electricity meter

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), which oversaw an outrageous mismanagement of resources leading to an unprecedented power crisis in the state, has imposed a fine of 10,000 for a faulty electricity meter on a non-profit school that runs mainly on solar energy.

The board's slap-happy decision to take action against the Tiruvannamalai school flies in the face of rules that make TNEB responsible for the replacement of defective meters. To make matters worse, the board has pulled the plug on the school, leaving it without power.

Solar energy farm in Dhule hits eco-clearance hurdle

The world's biggest single-site solar energy farm, to be built in Shivajinagar, Dhule district, failed to meet its March 15 deadline because the state forest department has claimed ownership of the project site.

Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, who also heads the energy department, made this revelation in the legislative assembly in reply to a written question by Congress legislator Amin Patel and others.

India Ministry Said to Seek Extension of Wind Farm Tax Break

India’s renewable energy ministry is seeking to extend a tax break for wind farms in the world’s third-largest market for turbines, said two government officials with direct knowledge of the matter.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has applied for approval from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Cabinet to extend the incentive known as accelerated depreciation, which is set to expire on March 31, said the officials, declining to be identified because the information is private.

State prepares action plan on climate change

The state will send its final draft on the action plan on climate change to the Centre in a few days. The plan includes the government's strategy to address the problems of rising levels of sea water to melting Himalayan glaciers.

State environment secretary RPS Kahlon said the final draft plan had almost been prepared and was now to be submitted. "After the submission of the final draft plan, the Centre will decide which funding agency, be it the World Bank or Asian Development Bank (ADB), to approach for executing the projects," Kahlon said.

Colombo eyes Delhi’s green transport

Delhi's transport system will now be replicated by other major cities.

Sri Lankan minister for petroluem and oil Sushil Premajayantha said that they were using Delhi as a model to replicate the CNG-transport system in Colombo and hoped to start work on the same in coming months.

Gamesa Corp. Tecnologica SA (GAM), Spain’s biggest wind-turbine maker, plans to invest 3 billion rupees ($60 million) in power transmission infrastructure in India’s southern Tamil Nadu state, a company official said.

Gamesa, which is the third-biggest supplier of turbines in India, will build a 400-kilovolt substation that will help distribute 750 megawatts of power, Ramesh Kymal, head of its India unit, said in a March 16 interview in Chennai.

Farmers oppose burning of toxic waste at Pithampur plant

Farmers, living in Tarpura and other villages surrounding Ramky Enviro Engineers in Pithampur, are up in arms against the government's decision to incinerate toxic wastes from the now defunct Union Carbide plant in Bhopal in Pithampur.

The government is planning to incinerate 346 metric ton (MT) of the toxic waste at the Ramky plant.

Indian firms still to warm up to waste

Though some large electronics brands such as Nokia and Dell offer to take back old mobile phones and computers as part of an effort to restrict electronic waste, experts say a majority of the smaller firms are hardly prepared to meet an approaching government deadline on e-waste collection and management.
