Budget 2012: Hike in allocation for green revolution in East under RKVY to intensify agriculture research

The budget proposal to hike the allocation for green revolution in the East from Rs 400 to Rs 1000 crore under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana will intensify agriculture research in the area. New technology for faster waste processing at Kanjurmarg ground

Garbage processing could get faster in a couple of months. If all goes according to the plan of the solid waste management (SWM) department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), garbage would be processed using an enhanced bioremediation technology at the Kanjurmarg disposal site from May.

The bioreactor technology that would be employed to treat the waste at the 66-hectare dumping ground would ensure faster processing.

 

Also, a closed cell for treatment would prevent the release of toxic gases in the surroundings.

Solar panels, CFL lamps, LED lights set to get cheaper

Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee has doled out some tax concessions for green products and pushed for measures to make agriculture sustainable. He has exempted solar plants and equipment from special countervailing duty (CVD) to encourage the setting up of new solar thermal plants. In order to encourage the use of energy saving devices such as compact fluorescent lamps and LED lights, Mukherjee has proposed their exemption from customs duty.

India has failed to reduce its purchases of Iranian oil, and if it doesn’t do so, President Barack Obama may be forced to impose sanctions on one of Asia’s most important nations, Obama administration officials said on Wednesday.

A decision to levy penalties under a new US law restricting payments for Iranian oil could come as early as 28 June, according to several US officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Suzlon Energy Can’t Tap Repower Unit’s Loan to Repay Debt

Suzlon Energy Ltd. (SUEL), barred from tapping a 750 million-euro ($980 million) loan raised by its German unit Repower Systems SE (RPW) to reduce debt, may sell assets in order to repay bondholders this year.

Suzlon can’t use the Repower loan announced on March 1 from banks led by BayernLB Holdings AG, Commerzbank AG and Deutsche Bank AG, Repower spokeswoman Caroline Zimmermann said today. “This is not possible in the contract,” she said in an e-mail to Bloomberg.

India to adopt low carbon growth path in 12th Five-Year Plan

India will adopt a low carbon growth path in the 12th five year plan to meet the national target of lowering the emission intensity of its gross domestic product (GDP) by 20-25 per cent by 2020, the 2011-12 Economic Survey has suggested.

Rich countries need to be more sensitive to emissions: Survey

India is doing more than its fair share in reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions but developed countries need to be more sensitive to carbon emission, said the latest economic survey.

Tabled by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in Parliament on Thursday, a chapter on Sustainable Development and Climate Change has been for the first time introduced in the annual survey.

The survey recognises that sustainable development and climate change are becoming central areas of global concern, and India is equally concerned and engaged constructively in global negotiations.

Subsidised diesel adding to pollution, health costs: Survey

Diesel price needs to be revised upward, or subjected to higher taxes, as misuse of subsidised diesel was adding to pollution and public health costs, the government's pre-budget economic report card said today.

Railways plans to turn a green leaf through renewable energy

In an attempt to become environment-friendly, the Indian Railways plans to set up renewable energy generation capacities—such as wind power, solar energy and bio-diesel plants—for its own use, railway minister Dinesh Trivedi said in his budget speech on Wednesday.

The renewable energy plans of the railways include setting up 72 megawatts (MW) wind power plants in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Untreated waste from industries polluting water and soil of city

Hazardous industrial waste like thinners, solvents and used oil are allegedly being dumped in and around Gurgaon, flouting pollution norms. An industry body has raised the issue with the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC). “The contaminated waste oil is being thrown in the sewage system which is polluting the water and soil,” alleged Amina Shervani of the Manesar Industries Welfare Association (MIWA).

Indus Towers to make 20K more towers diesel-free by April 13

Telecom tower company Indus Towers will make 20,000 of its sites or 20% of its network diesel-free by April 2013 at an investment of up to Rs 165 crore as part of an initiative to reduce carbon footprint, a top company official said today.

Indus Towers is a joint venture between telecom majors Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular.

The company has already turned over 8,900 towers in its portfolio of 1.10 lakh diesel-free and will work towards taking the number to 20,000 by April 2013, Chief Executive BS Shantharaju told reporters here.

REC raising new €100 mn loan

State-owned Rural Electrification Corp. Ltd (REC) is set to raise €100 million (Rs.656 crore) from Germany-based KfW Bankengruppe for financing renewable energy projects in India at concessional interest rates.

“Everything has been done and the loan agreement is to be signed,” said Rajeev Sharma, chairman and managing director of REC.

A KfW Bankengruppe spokesperson confirmed the loan sanction in an emailed reply, adding that the contract will be signed later this month.

11 lakh households have no electricity, 85% of rural India uses firewood as fuel

Barely one in every ten households in rural Bihar and two-thirds of houses in the state's urban areas use electricity to light their houses, Census 2011 figures reveal.

Just over half of rural India uses electricity as its main source of lighting, an increase of 12% over 2001. A consortium comprising Tata Power Co. Ltd and SN Power Norway is in talks to buy a significant stake in a 96 megawatts (MW) hydropower project in Sikkim from Sarda Energy and Minerals Ltd in a transaction valued at about Rs. 200 crore, according to two people aware of the development.
