A resident of H S R Layout and an IIT-Mumbai alumnus Ravi Shankar has used the free space on his rooftop to generate electricity using solar energy but it is unlike the domestic solar water heater system that uses heat from the sun’s radiation. NRTSPS (Nano Roof Top Solar Photovoltaic Systems) is the first of its kind in India and has been approved and certified by the CPRI (Central Power Research Institute), BESCOM, Electrical Inspectorate and the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

Civic bodies not worried with ‘bulging’ waste

The Jaipur Municipal Corporation's (JMC) 12th general body meeting on Monday witnessed Independent councillor Haji Nawab Ali throwing garbage on the sanitation committee chairman, BJP's Roshan Saini. It seems that the civic body that has the responsibility of keeping the city clean is least interested in solid waste management.

Hedegaard confident that Rio+20 can deliver

Connie Hedegaard, the European Commission’s climate chief, expressed confidence that a noteworthy agreement would emerge from the Rio+20 conference.

“I’m absolutely sure,” she told attendees of KPMG’s Global Sustainable Business Growth Summit in New York. “It’s doable. I think there are viable, specific things that can be done so it’s not just a talk show.”

IIT-Gandhinagar, UL join hands for solar power research

The Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IIT-Gn) has joined hands with US-based Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), USA, a not-for-profit product safety testing and certification organisation for a student research project in solar power.

Tata Power commissions 25 MW solar project in Gujarat

Country's largest private power utility Tata Power today said it has commissioned the 25 MW Mithapur solar project in Gujarat, boosting the entity's renewable energy portfolio.

The solar photo-voltaic (PV) power project has been developed with an investment of about Rs 365 crore. The firm has signed the power purchase pact for the plant, commissioned on January 25, with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd.

"Tata Power now has a strong portfolio of over 28 MW of solar and 375 MW of wind making it the largest renewable utility player in India," the firm said in a statement.

EU carbon tax stand irks BASIC ministers

Basic ministers of environment from China, Brazil, South Africa and India have jointly condemned the unilateral decision of the European Union to impose a carbon tax on airlines in the guise of climate change.

Talking tough on this issue of the EU’s emission trading scheme, environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan minced no words when she said: “Such a unilateral trade action taken by the EU will seriously jeopardise international efforts to combat climate change.”

Action plan to promote energy efficient programme

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) will devise a joint plan of action in cooperation with the department of consumer affairs and consumer organisations to promote energy efficient products in the country.

Nations Slam Canada's Withdrawal From Kyoto Protocol

Four emerging economies, including India and China, today condemned top carbon emitter Canada's decision to withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol saying such steps by developed countries "seriously questions their credibility" in dealing with the threat of climate change.

Canada, a major energy producer, had quit the Kyoto Protocol on climate change within a few days after the Durban Conference, saying the 1997 accord was an 'impediment' on cutting global carbon emissions.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday stressed the need for “equity” in global climate change negotiations and said economic growth should not harm the environment.

India's JSW Energy to set up power plant in South Africa

Integrated power generator JSW Energy, looking for suitable acquisitions inside India, is planning to set up a 450-600-MW coal-fired plant in South Africa where the power sector is opening up for investment.

Lanco to exit wind energy business

In an indication of the coming consolidation in India’s wind energy sector, Lanco Infratech Ltd has decided to exit the segment and has given the mandate for selling the business to audit and consulting firm Ernst and Young (E&Y).

“Lanco has 5,000 megawatts (MW) of wind power licences and had acquired land for 600MW of capacity through Lanco Wind Power Pvt. Ltd,” said a person aware of the development, requesting anonymity. Another person, who didn’t want to be named, confirmed the development.

Pollution by Chinese electric cars greater than by gasoline cars: Study

Chinese electric cars have a disastrous impact on pollution that could be more harmful to health than gasoline vehicles, a new study has found.

The University of Tennessee study found that electric cars cause more particulate matter pollution than gasoline cars.

FCCB payments, balance sheet worries haunt Suzlon Energy

Suzlon Energy Ltd reported an impressive order inflow in the December quarter, but weakness in operations, a cut in guidance and an increasingly stressed balance sheet have disappointed investors. The stock, which has been underperforming the market by a huge margin, lost a further 2% after the results.

Suzlon reported a 12% rise in revenue to Rs. 4,985 crore in the December quarter. However, after three consecutive quarters of profits, it reported a net loss of Rs. 286.5 crore. The culprit was Suzlon Wind, or the company’s Indian operations, which reported a loss of Rs. 400 crore.... Read more..

New solar-powered water pumps from Grundfos

The Danish water pump major, Grundfos, will soon introduce a range of solar-powered water pumps for use in agriculture, industries and commercial buildings.

Grundfos has been selling solar water pumps in India but of low power — 900 W to 1,400 W. Last year, it sold 2,500 pumps, which was 25 per cent higher than in the previous year. Now, Grundfos India has sent a proposal to Denmark for approval for producing four products up to 7.5 kW.

Tata Power builds 25 MW solar project in India

Tata Power has secured financing for a 25 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power project at Mithapur, in the western state of Gujarat, India.

Straddling 100 acres of land, the solar PV plant will consist of crystalline silicon solar PV modules and is being built under Gujarat state’s Solar Power Policy 2009.
