SGS Launches First Global Product Label for Carbon Footprinting

SGS Consumer Testing Services announced the launch of what it says is the first carbon footprint labeling program for individual products manufactured and sold on international markets.

Unlike labels limited to a state, a country or a single phase in a product’s carbon journey, SGS’s program offers a global approach that covers all geographies with a single label as well as recognizing multiple levels of environmental achievement.

Solar power lights up Swedish Embassy

In an effort to reduce carbon footprint, the Swedish Embassy has started using solar panels for power generation. The embassy will meet 10% of its total energy demand through solar power.

The embassy building has solar panels spread over an area of 600 sqm that produce about 75 kw of power. This, say officials, will result in annual savings of Rs 7-8 lakh in power bills.

Asia solar stocks surge on strong demand hopes

Solar stocks rallied around the world on Thursday , with some surging as much as 20 percent on signs that prices for solar energy components are stabilising.

In Hong Kong, GCL-Poly Energy Holdings Ltd was up 13.2 percent, Trony Solar Holdings Co Ltd rose 8.3 percent, Apollo Solar Energy Technology Holdings Ltd firmed 3.5 percent and Solargiga Energy Holdings Ltd climbed 13.2 percent.

South Korea's OCI Co Ltd jumped 14.9 percent.

Rajasthan will soon overtake Gujarat in solar power: Gehlot

Two days after Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi's visit during the just concluded Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, the impact of his statements is yet to waive off on Wednesday. Maharashtra govt to increase power generation via small projects

The state government aims to increase the power generation through private small hydro power (SHP) projects from the present 9 megawatts (mw) per year to 30 megawatts, water resources department (WRD) secretary, CS Modak said.

“Nearly 53 megawatts of power has been generated by the SHP projects in the last six years. We want to achieve an annual target of generating 30 megawatts, in the next five years’ span,” Modak said.

Government to put a cap on energy usage by companies

Programme will create world’s largest energy saving certificate-trading platform.

Big corporations in India, including Tata Steel, Jindal Power and NTPC, will have to keep a tab on power usage at their plants as the government is setting a cap on the energy consumption of large corporations.

According to officials, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has drawn a list of about 477 plants belonging to different corporations and has set targets on their energy consumption. The move is aimed at improving the energy efficiency of the Indian industry.

Rickshaws in New Delhi go green

If hydrogen is produced from renewable resources in India, it could be a greener alternative for urban commuters in cities such as New Delhi, a minister said.

It took three years and $1 million to complete, but authorities with the U.N. Industrial Development Organization helped India launch the world's first fleet of 15 hydrogen-fueled rickshaws from a station in New Delhi.

Farooq Abdullah, the Indian minister of renewable energy, said hydrogen-powered vehicles would go a long way toward developing a cleaner urban environment.

Gamesa sets up Rs 175-crore blade unit in Gujarat

Wind turbine maker Gamesa today said it has set up a new factory in Gujarat to manufacture blades for its turbine systems G5X-850 KW and G9X-2 MW. Gamesa has invested Rs 175 crore to set up the facility which is estimated to produce 390 blades by 2013, the company said in a statement here. State to have a climate change impact model

Similar on the lines of the West Bengal model, renowned environmentalist Dr R K Pachauri is all set to prepare a report on climate change impact model for the state. Having got a green signal from Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, the model will help assess extreme events for the state like during the Mumbai floods in 2005.

Solar firm shares rally as panel prices stabilize

Solar stocks rallied sharply on Wednesday, regaining some of the ground lost during last year's steep sell-off, on signs that prices for solar energy components were stabilizing.

Chinese solar companies Hanwha SolarOne Co Ltd (HSOL.O), JinkoSolar Holding Co (JKS.N), JA Solar Holdings Co Ltd (JASO.O), Trina Solar Ltd (TSL.N), Suntech Power Holdings Co Ltd (STP.N) and Yingli Green Energy Holding Co Ltd (YGE.N) led the jump, with gains of 23 to 41 percent.

India has finally made it to the global solar funding map with around 95 million dollar in venture capital (VC) funding and over 1.1 billion dollars in large-scale project funding in 2011, a report here said.

The annual and fourth quarter report of 2011 by Mercom Capital Group, a global clean energy communications and consulting firm, released here today said the investment activity in 2011 was robust.

Praj Industries acquires water treatment company Neela Systems for Rs. 64 crore

Praj Industries has acquired a 50.20% stake in the Mumbai-based Neela Systems for Rs. 64 crore. Praj is a Pune based nearly Rs.553 crore biofuels technology developer and manufacturer of equipment for breweries and distilleries.

According to a statement released here, Praj has the option to hike its stake in Neela from the 50.20% it has acquired now. Following this acquisition, Neela will become a subsidiary of Praj but will continue to operate as an independent entity, Praj has stated.

Natarajan writes to EU on Carbon Tax

Minister for environment and forests (MoEF) Jayanthi Natarajan has shot off a letter to European Union Commissioner for Climate and Energy Connie Hedegaard demanding a reversal of the carbon tax on airline emissions.
The letter has stated that such a unilateral measure “stands not only in violation of the principles and provisions of the international convention, but will also not augur well for the success of future climate change negotiations.”

AP plans to buy 2,000 MW of power a year up to 2016

 With demand for power mounting, the Andhra Pradesh Government will buy 3,000 MW of additional power worth Rs 7,083 crore this year. It approved a plan prepared by Andhra Pradesh Transmission Corporation Ltd (APTransco) and APPCC (AP Power Coordination Committee), to meet short-term and medium-term demand in the State.

Okhla waste plant to come under green scan

For the next three months, the Delhi environment department and Delhi Pollution Control Board (DPCC) will intensively monitor operation of the Okhla waste-to-energy plant.

 The Union ministry of environment and forest (MoEF) on Tuesday submitted the detailed report to the National Green Tribunal on the environment clearance granted to the Posco’s mega steel project in Orissa.

MoEF, in its report, has stated that the environmental clearance to the proposed steel project has been accorded abiding by the laws.

 Accountancy group KPMG will expand its climate change and sustainability team globally throughout this year, and is currently looking to fill positions in the US, Australia and India.

Power Ministry to finalise Rs 500 cr smart grid pilot projects soon

 The Power Ministry is likely to finalise about eight smart grid technologies-related projects on pilot basis worth nearly Rs 500 crore in two months.

 

The basic idea of a smart grid is to improve overall efficiency of the power sector, especially in transmission and distribution segments, with the aid of information technology.
