Govt drafts 'lax' car fuel efficiency norms

Swedes eye sustainable energy tie-ups

 Sweden is keen on working with Indian companies engaged in innovation in sustainable energy, said Mr Micael Hagman, Deputy Director, Indo-Swedish Environment Technology Cooperation.

India Solar Projects Get Bids From Local, Foreign Firms

  India has received bids from 154 companies including Spain's Gestamp Solar, Fonroche Energy of France and local utilities Reliance Power Ltd. and Tata Power Co. for contracts to build solar power facilities, an executive of the agency in charge of buying electricity from solar projects said.

Mahindra to enter solar energy

 The $12.5 billion Mahindra group is diversifying into solar energy through its in-house private equity arm Mahindra Partners. The solar business, part of Mahindra's Clean Tech vertical, will be involved in on-grid solar plants, off-grid or captive solar plants, solar power products and EPC contracts. Mahindra Solar has already bagged a 5MW project in Rajasthan which will be up and running by January 2012. Climate change adaptation project for rural communities in Ahmednagar launched

 In an initiative to empower rural communities to cope with the vagaries of nature, a Climate Change Adaptation project covering 25 villages in neighbouring Ahmednagar district has been launched.

The project has been launched in cooperation with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard).

Greenpeace called upon Uttra Pradesh government to demand a bigger share of decentralised renewable energy

 In the backdrop of the upcoming National Development council (NDC) meeting, Greenpeace has called upon the Uttra Pradesh government to demand a bigger share of decentralised renewable energy (DRE) under the flagship Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY). Greenpeace also released its national report on RGGVY highlighting how the scheme has failed to meet its objectives.

GE Energy Financial Services Invests in Moser Baer Clean Energ

India's Moser Baer Clean Energy Ltd. Thursday said GE Energy Financial Services is investing 3 billion rupees ($60.6 million) in its 20 megawatt solar project in Italy.

The project is located at a greenhouse at Sardinia in Italy and its first 5 MW are already operational, with another 15 MW expected soon, Moser Baer Clean Energy said in a statement.

Moser Baer Clean Energy expects to have 1,500 MW of solar energy in India by 2015.

GE Energy Financial Services is the energy investment unit of General Electric Co.

Shriram group eyeing power projects via JVs

 The Rs 30,000-crore Shriram group is planning to promote non-renewable power projects through joint ventures and by way of investing in upcoming projects. The group, which is already a strong player in renewable energy sector, is now looking at setting up thermal-based power plants in states like Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, and has earmarked up to Rs 2,200 crore for renewable, non-renewable power projects and in infrastructure business.

Australia backs SA over mandatory emissions deal

 AUSTRALIA would support SA in its bid to deliver a legally binding climate-change deal during the Durban conference next month, Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd said yesterday.

This endorsement is likely to boost SA’s last-minute initiatives for a binding deal, as Australia becomes the latest developed country to back efforts for the continuation of the Kyoto Protocol.

The protocol, which was adopted in 1997, comes to an end next year and a second commitment is needed during the Durban conference for its continuation.

India may drag EU to WTO over carbon tax on airlines

 India may consider dragging European Union to the World Trade Organisation if the 27-nation bloc goes ahead with its contentious plan to impose carbon tax on non-EU airlines, sources said.

According to the EU plan, non-European airlines will have to pay a price for emission of carbon dioxide. From January 2012, airlines flying into or out of EU airports will have pay a tax to cover the Co2 emission they emit during the entire flights.

German envoy sees high scope for business ties with India

German companies, now mostly concentrated in Tier-I cities in India, are looking for Tier-II destinations for expansion, says a German envoy.

India sets up panel to assuage nuclear plant safety fears

India's federal government Thursday set up a 15-member panel of experts to discuss safety issues with villagers protesting against a nuclear power project in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, news reports said.

Villagers near the Kudankulam power plant being built with Russian assistance have been holding protests for weeks and want the plant scrapped out of concern for their safety and livelihoods.

Airtel slammed for 'failing' on emission reduction plan

Greenpeace India has slammed Bharti Airtel and the Cellular Operator Association of India (COAI) for their 'failure' to honor a commitment of disclosing a detailed and sustainable emission reduction plan, including a substantial substitution of diesel with renewable alternatives to power their network operations by September 2011.

New green building rating system launched

It will soon be possible to rate buildings according to their environmental friendliness. The upgraded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design 2011(LEED 2011 for India) rating system for green buildings was launched by the Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah, on Thursday.

India, France stress nuclear safety in foreign minister talks

The foreign ministers of India and France on Thursday agreed to strengthen their cooperation in the nuclear energy sector and said the safety of power plants was the top priority.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe and his Indian counterpart, SM Krishna, met in New Delhi as villagers protested nuclear plants in India.

The Indian government plans to build a 9,900-megawatt nuclear plant near Jaitapur in the western state of Maharashtra with technical assistance from the French energy company Areva SA.

Japan backs more studies on alternative CO2 offsets

Japan has awarded subsidies to 14 groups of domestic companies in its second and last round of recruitment for feasibility studies of emission-cutting measures abroad, part of its efforts to develop an alternative to the U.N.'s carbon offset market.

Twenty-six groups were selected in the first round. Japan plans to distribute 2.5 billion yen ($32 million) in subsidies between the 40 groups to test low carbon technology in 18 developing countries, the trade ministry said on Thursday.

Govt: Adoption of post-Kyoto pact in 2015 or later

The government will announce at upcoming U.N. climate talks that a new international framework to reduce greenhouse gases should be adopted in 2015 or later, years after the Kyoto Protocol expires, government sources said Wednesday.

Unlike the Kyoto Protocol, effective from 2008 to 2012, each nation will not be legally obligated to reduce global warming gases such as carbon dioxide from 2013 during the "transition period," but each nation will be asked to steadily carry out the Cancun Agreements, in which countries proposed voluntary reduction targets.

Private contractors trash city as civic agencies fail to hold them responsible

While the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon ( MCG) has been largely successful in implementing the door-to-door garbage collection project in its jurisdiction, the overall sanitation in the city remains poor.

The main reason for the sorry state of affairs is the fact that both the civic agencies (MCG and HUDA) have not been able to rein in the private contractors who seem to dump garbage wherever they want.
